3820 HD (250-3572) Battery Information Faxback Doc. 1786 Note: Replacement Battery (25-3526). The procedure on the next page tells you how to install the battery and how to connect the AC adapter that powers the computer and charges the battery. CAUTION: Using an AC adapter other than the one supplied might damage the battery and the computer. 1. Place the computer on a flat, level surface. 2. Slide the battery into the battery compartment. 3. Insert the female end of the AC power cord into the corresponding outlet on the adapter. 4. Insert the AC adapter's barrel connector into the computer's DC IN 16V jack. 5. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet and let the battery fully charge before you use the computer on the battery power. You can immediately begin using the computer on AC power. 6. When you finish using the AC adapter, unplug it from the AC outlet. Then, disconnect it from the computer. Notes: * The battery charges in 2 to 5 hours, depending on the computer's activity. For example, if you use the computer while the battery charges and there is heavy hard/floppy drive access, the battery takes longer to charge. * The computer's battery discharges slightly if the AC adapter is connected to the DC IN 16V jack, but not to an AC outlet. * The adapter/charger does not charge the battery when the diskette drive is in use. Battery charging resumes when the diskette drive is not in use. * Do not store the battery in high temperature locations for extended periods. * For more information about care and use of the battery, see "Information About Rechargeable Batteries." Eventually, your computer's battery loses its ability to maintain a charge. This time period varies depending on use, storage conditions, and several other complex factors. When this occurs, you must replace the battery. Replace the battery with only the same type of battery. You must also charge the new battery before you use it. Low-Battery Indications: The BATT indicator and the computer's beeper tell you the condition of the battery in the following five ways: * The indicator lights orange during charging. * The indicator lights green when the battery the battery is fully charged. * The indicator does not light if you run the computer from a charged battery and the AC adapter is not plugged in. * The indicator lights orange and blinks if you remove the battery from the computer while AC power is being used or if the battery is damaged. * The indicator lights red to indicate that first stage of low power; the speaker beeps every 20 seconds to indicate the final stage of low power. The beep occurs only if the speaker is enabled. This final stage lasts from about 2 to 4 minutes, depending on the type of computer activity. CAUTION: When the indicator lights red and the tone begins sounding, you have about 2 minutes to save your data to the hard disk or a diskette. Note: The indicator might light red during disk operations. If the indicator turns off when the disk drive turns off, the battery still has plenty of power. If battery power is too low for normal operation, but you want to continue using the computer, connect the AC adapter or install another fully charged battery. To prevent the possibility of losing information, attach the adapter to your computer and then to an AC outlet before you replace the battery. The computer loses all data not saved onto a disk when the power turns off. Information about rechargeable batteries: Your computer uses a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery. A fully-charged battery can power the computer for about 2 1/2 hours. However, operating time varies depending on several factors, including the number of options installed, the backlight brightness, and the amount of diskette and hard drive access. Hints: * About once a month, operate the computer with battery power until the BATT indicator lights red and the computer turns off. Then, immediately recharge the battery. This helps the battery last longer. * Buy a backup battery so that you can use your computer longer where AC power is not available. * Use the battery's charge indicator switch to remind you if you have charged the battery or not. Set the switch so that the red dot appears if the battery needs recharging. After you charge the battery, set the switch to the other position. CAUTIONS: * Do not incinerate the battery. * Do not directly connect the battery's negative and positive terminals to each other. (jej/tmc/BKL-06/03/96)
