1800 HD (250-3502) Battery Info Faxback Doc. # 1867 You can power your computer from the supplied AC adapter or from the rechargeable battery (250-3526). We recommend you use the AC adapter as described below until you have completely charged the battery, in case the battery comes fully discharged. Using the Ac-Adapter and Charging the Battery: The following procedure tells you how to install the battery and how to connect the AC adapter that powers the computer and charges the battery. CAUTIONS: * Using an AC adapter other than the one supplied might damage the battery and the computer. * Unplug the AC adapter before you disconnect it from the computer. 1. Place the computer on a flat, level surface. 2. Slide the battery into the battery compartment. 3. Insert the AC adapter's barrel connector into the computer's DC IN 16V jack. 4. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet and let the battery fully charge before you use the computer on battery power. You can immediately begin using the computer on AC power. Notes: * The battery charges in about 4 hours if you use the computer while the battery charges. If you do not use the computer while the battery charges, charging takes about 2 hours. * The computer's battery discharges slightly if the AC adapter is connected to the DC IN 16V jack but not to an AC outlet. * Do not store the battery in high temperature locations for extended periods. * For more information about care and use of the battery, see "Information About Rechargeable Batteries" in this manual. Eventually, your computer's battery loses its ability to maintain a charge. This time period varies depending on use, storage conditions, and several other complex factors. When this occurs, you must replace the battery. Replace the battery with only the same type of battery (250-3526), available from your nearby Radio Shack Store. You should also charge the new battery before you use it. Low-Battery Indications: The BATT indicator and the computer's beeper tell you the condition of the battery in the following six ways: * The indicator lights orange during charging. * The indicator lights green when the battery is fully charged. * The indicator does not light during normal battery operation. * The indicator lights red and a tone sounds about once a minute when battery power drops below the power level needed for normal operation. CAUTION: When the BATT indicator lights red and the tone begins sounding, you have about 5 minutes to save your data to the hard disk or a diskette. * Indicator lights orange and blinks if you remove the battery from the computer while the AC adapter is plugged in. * If the indicator lights orange and blinks while the battery is installed, the battery might be damaged or the computer might need service. Turn off the computer immediately. If the battery loses power but you want to continue using the 1800 HD, connect the AC adapter or another battery. CAUTION: You must attach the adapter/charger to your computer and then to an AC outlet before you replace the battery. If the adapter/charger IS NOT connected before you replace the battery, data could be lost. See "Using the AC Adapter and Charging the Battery" in the manual. If the computer turns off before you save your data to the hard disk or a diskette, you lose all unsaved data. Information about Rechargeable Batteries: Your computer uses a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery. Nickel-cadmium batteries can forget how much power they have if you always keep the fully charged. The battery lasts longest if you occasionally--about once a month--operate the computer with battery power until the BATT indicator lights red and the computer turns off, and then immediately recharge the battery. You can power the computer for up to about 2 1/2 hours from a fully-charged battery. However, operating time will vary depending on the options you install, the backlight brightness, and the amount of diskette and hard drive access. (smm/tmc-09/29/95)
