AST Advantage! 6033s (250-0403) Backup Issues Faxback Doc. # 15600 To get the system back to factory configuration, the following steps need to be taken: 1. At the AST 6033SX backup prompt, press . The system indicates a backup of system files has been written to the hard disk (Guru Recovery Disk). 2. Another prompt comes up to backup to floppy. Pressing brings up the prompt to insert a Hi-Cap disk (press ). 3. The system formats the disk, and copies the system files. Once this is done, normal system startup will continue. 4. At the Windows Main Desktop, an overlay box indicates "Make your Disks Now". Click on OK. 5. An AST Disk Utility Menu comes up: AST Technical Support Guru Recovery Cirrus 5424 Video Drivers v. 1.43 Logitech Mouse Driver v.6.12 MSDOS 6.22 Install (4 disks) Video for Windows Runtime v.1.1 (2 disks) Spinnaker PFS:Windows Works v.2.02 (3 disks) 6. Once the backups are complete, the system exits you to Windows. 7. A second backup screen comes up that is the Backup AST Works. This is to make disks for non-AST Works programs such as Windows. It uses the AST Disk Utility Backup: Programs 8 disks Greetings 9 disks Getting Started 5 disks Ask AST 1 disk Clip Art and Pictures 10 disks 33 disks total 8. After clicking on OK, you will be prompted to configure Microsoft Backup (disk configuring/comparing). 9. The next backup screen is for MS Backup-ASTWORK1.SET. This will create 30 backup disks labelled CC50111A.001-CC50111A.030. 10. Upon completion and exiting, the system restarts into Windows. NOTE: The ASTDU directory is not backed up during this procedure. If this directory is not backed up, the AST Master Disk program will not run if this directory is not re-installed to the hard drive. To restore the system back to factory configuration: 1. Boot up with the AST Recovery Guru - the hard drive must be formatted to make it bootable. 2. Install the following options: MS-DOS 6.22 (a:setup ) Windows 3.11 (a:setup ) Spinnaker PFS:Windows Works (using FILE - RUN a:\setup ) SVGA (using FILE - RUN a:\install ) Mouse drivers Video for Windows 1.1 Runtime 3. Under Program Manager, run c:\DOS\MWBACKUP. An error message will come up indicating this program is not properly installed (please reinstall). It also indicates a change must be made in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI file: [386 Enh] device=[msdos path]VFintd.386 4. Exit Windows, and make this change to this file. Restart Windows. 5. Load MSBACKUP. Another error comes up indicating the DMA Buffer is too small - set DMABuffersize=018. Add this line in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI file at the end of the [386 Enh] section. 6. MSBACKUP configures the system to work with the floppy drives. 7. Go in and select the files, and begin the restore. 8. The following files are not copied from the system configuration, and must be added later: VGALOGO.RLE 44,792 bytes ASTADVAN.BMP 77,827 bytes These should be copied from the c:\windows\system directory before you reformat your hard drive. To create the original Windows logo screen of the AST 6033SX system: 1. Go into Windows SETUP from within Windows. Change the video driver loaded to any other video mode supported, noting the driver currently being used. 2. Rename the file VGALOGO.RLE to OLDVGA.RLE. Copy the file VGALOGO.RLE (44,792 bytes) into the C:\WINDOWS directory. 3. Restart Windows. Change the video mode back into the original mode selected. Save changes and restart Windows. 4. Now completely exit Windows to the MS-DOS prompt. Reload Windows. The new VGALOGO.RLE file should now load. To enable the prompt for making AST Master Disks, the ASTDU directory must be available on the hard drive. As well, in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI file the RUN= option should be changed to read RUN=WRAPPER.EXE. (cc/all-06/28/95)
