SENSATION I (250-1650) INSTALLING A NEW SOUND CARD FAXBACK DOC # 2630 It is recommended that when you install a new sound card into the Tandy Sensation I Computer, you should disable the original onboard sound circuitry. Then you can install the new sound at the same IRQ, I/O address and DMA channel as the original sound circuitry, and therefore, will not experience any hardware conflicts. When the original sound circuitry is disabled, and the new sound board is installed, the user will experience the "side effects" listed below: 1. TeleMind, the answering machine software that came with the Sensation I, will no longer function. 2. The "SPEAK TEXT" option within WinMate, will not work correctly. When you click on the "SPEAK TEXT" button or menu option, the text entered will be spoken, however, the computer will generally go into a loop and speak the same text over and over again until you exit out of Windows. 3. CD Audio will no longer play from the Sensation I's built in RCA jacks. If you install an optional CD Audio cable, you will still be able to play CD Audio from the RCA jacks on the new sound card. 4. The built in speaker will simply function as PC Speaker. The user will have to purchase external speakers to hear sound. The volume controls on the front of the computer will obviously no longer function. Follow the steps outlined below to install a new sound card: 1. Edit the SYSTEM.INI and change the SHELL line from "SHELL=DESKTOP.EXE" to "SHELL=PROGMAN.EXE". 2. Delete the following lines from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file: loadhigh \bin\VISBIOS rem The sndmixer program sets the sound levels ... if exist c:\windows\sndmixer.exe c:\windows\sndmixer /r 3. In the Control Panel, under Drivers, remove the three Tandy drivers: Tandy MMA Wave/MIDI Port Tandy Wave/MIDI Synthesizer Tandy Virtual DSP Driver 4. Edit the SYSTEM.INI and remove the following device line under the 386 Enhanced section. DEVICE=VDSPD.386 (If Virtual DSP driver was installed) 5. Reboot the computer. When you see the memory message, press the key to run the Sensation I Setup program. (The SETUP program can also be accessed by running the "SETUPMMS" program in the \BIN directory of the Sensation I Startup Diskette). 6. Use the arrow keys to highlight the option "MULTIMEDIA [ENABLED]. Press the to toggle it to [DISABLED]. 7. Press the key to save the settings and exit. 8. Install the sound card according to its documentation. Set the sound card to I/O port address 220, IRQ 5, DMA channel 1. If it is a 16 bit card, there may be an option for a high DMA. Set the high DMA for "NONE" or "DISABLED". While installing the sound card, replace the existing black audio cable from the back of the CD- ROM drive with the cable listted below: CATALOG NUMBER: 250-1640 PART NUMBER: W-0411 TANDY NATIONAL PARTS: (800) 442-2425 (This cable is designed to attach the original LMS CD- ROM drive to a Creative Labs sound board.
