NOTE: The number of internal drives of any given type is limited. The individual limits are two diskette drives, two IDE hard drives, and four SCSI hard drives. To install a drive: 1. Adjust the switches and terminating resistors on the drive as indicated in the drive documentation. 2. Select the drive bay. CAUTION: To obtain the best cooling during operation, mount 5 1/4-inch hard drives as high as possible in the computer. Avoid placing high-power 5 1/4-inch drives in adjacent bays. 3. Remove the cosmetic panel that covers the drive bay. You will replace the panel later if you install a hard drive. 4. Mount the drive in the bay. Recess the drive if you will be replacing the cosmetic panel. To mount a 3 1/2-inch DISKETTE DRIVE in a 5 1/4-inch bay, you must attach a mounting pan to the drive. To mount a 3 1/2-inch HARD DRIVE in a 5 1/4-inch bay, you must attach mounting brackets to the drive. If the necessary mounting hardware is not included with the drive, contact your computer dealer for parts and information. 5 Connect a drive power cable to each drive. The power cables extend from the computer power supply. The cable connectors are keyed for proper Pin 1 orientation. 6. Connect a data/controller cable to each drive. the main logic board has connectors for diskette drive and IDE hard drive cables. The cable connectors are keyed for proper Pin 1 orientation. NOTE: Do not use the IDE connector for CD-ROM drives or SCSI, ESDI, or ST-506 hard drives. These drives require separate interface adapters. 7. Unless the storage device is equipped with its own cosmetic cover panel, replace the original drive bay panel. CAUTION: The panel must be in place before you operate the computer. MOUNTING A DRIVE IN THE BOTTOM 3 1/2-INCH BAY Use at least three mounting screws to secure the drive. If possible use holes on both side of the bay. Additional holes are provided on the bottom of the bay. NOTE: To reach the holes on the enclosed side of the chassis, insert the screwdriver through the rectangular window. MOUNTING A 5 1/4-INCH DRIVE Use four mounting screws to secure the drive. MOUNTING A 3 1/2-INCH HARD DRIVE IN A 5 1/4-INCH BAY 1. Use a 3 1/2-Inch to 5 1/4-Inch Hard Drive Mounting Bracket Adapter Kit to adapt the drive to the 5 1/4-inch bay. Secure the mounting brackets to the drive, using the screws provided with the brackets. 2. Mount the drive as you would a 5 1/4-inch hard drive. INSTALLING AN EXPANSION ADAPTER Your computer has two expansion areas. The lower area supports four AT-height adapters (4.8 inches high), secured individually by screws. Three of the slots support full-length adapters (13.4 inches). The slot closet to the main logic board supports a 7-inch adapter. The upper area supports three smaller, XT-height expansion adapters (7 inches x 4.2 inches), all secured by one metal clamp. NOTES: If you install a video adapter, you must be disable the SVGA circuitry on the main logic board by changing the setting of the Enable/Disable On-Board Video jumper. See "Changing Jumper Settings." THREE-SLOT AREA: A drive installed in the bottom 3 1/2-inch drive bay might restrict the length of the adapters you can install in the three slot area. INSTALLING AN ADAPTER IN THE THREE-SLOT AREA 1. Loosen the screw that secures the slot-cover clamp. Remove the clamp by pulling the screw through the keyhole opening. 2. Remove the expansion slot cover. Save the slot cover in case you later remove the expansion adapter. 3. Press the expansion adapter into the expansion slot connector on the riser card. 4. Replace the clamp, and tighten the screw to secure the expansion adapter. 5. Connect expansion adapter cables (if any) as specified by the instructions provided with the adapter. INSTALLING AN ADAPTER IN THE FOUR-SLOT AREA 1. Remove the bottom of the computer and the expansion slot screw and cover. Save the slot cover in case you later remove the expansion adapter. 2. Press the expansion adapter into the expansion slot connector on the riser card. Be sure the adapter is correctly positioned in the guide slot. 3. Secure the expansion adapter, using the screw you removed from the slot cover. 4. Connect expansion adapter cables (if any) as specified by the instructions provided with the adapter. Route the cables over the chassis crossbar if necessary. REMOVING AN EXPANSION ADAPTER If the expansion adapter is in the three-slot area, loosen the screw that secures the clamp. If the expansion adapter is in the four-slot area, remove the expansion slot screw. Disconnect the data cable (if any) from the adapter, and gently move the adapter back and forth while pulling it out of the riser card.
