This is to enable powerdown mode on AST 15" Compal monitors. Pin 9 of the VGA connector is used to signal a power down command to the monitor. Most monitors do not follow this power down mode. Most newer monitors support VESA powerdown specifications. 2-3 Monitor interface control disabled. This (default) should be the default condition unless it is an AST 15" Compal monitor. Video Memory Type R822 E803 E804 Video Memory Type Installed 1-2 1-2 Asymetric DRAM (Default Setting) Installed 2-3 2-3 Symmetric DRAM Removed 2-3 2-3 Graphic DRAM Note: The default settings should not need to be changed. The type of video memory to be added is dictated by the original video memory, which is soldered onto the board. Your computer comes ready for you to use a color VGA or SVGA monitor, set passwords, and use the System Setup program. If you prefer to disable the built-in video connector, disable the password feature, specify the type of add-in display adapter, or deny access to the System Setup program, you need to set switches on the system board. Warnings: Altering switch setting while the computer is on can permanently damage the computer and its components. To avoid accidental discharge of static electricity as you handle components or switches, you can use a grounding wrist strap. Static electricity can damage computer components. To avoid the possibility of being shocked, do not use an object make of conductive material, such as the graphite in a pencil, to slide the switch. To set one or more system switches, do the following: 1. Turn the computer off, unplug the power and phone cords, and disconnect all peripheral devices. Remove the system-unit cover, and move the internal drive bay. 2. Locate the switch bank (figure 10). by default, all the switches are off, except switch 5. Leave them as they are unless you want to do the following: * If you have plugged your monitor into the built-in VGA connector, you should of course leave the built-in VGA enabled. Because your computer includes a video autosense feature that detects the presence of many add-in video adapters, you should usually leave the built-in VGA enabled even if you are installing an add- in video adapter. Disable built-in VGA only if you install a CGA or monochrome video board, or if the system does not recognize a video adapter you are installing. If you need to disable built-in VGA, set switch 1 on. * If you have disabled the built-in video connector and intend to install a monochrome, rather than color, display adapter as the primary display adapter, set system board switch 5 off. * To prevent the computer from using passwords, set switch 4 on. (The system does not have a password until you establish one in the System Setup program.) * If you intend to disable the System Setup program, set switch 8 to on. Table 1.
