Packard Bell (250-0304) Troubleshooting Faxback Doc. # 3748 Statesman 200C Normal Condition: The computer should power up with only the charged battery, with only the AC adapter, or with both. The operating system should load from the HDD, and the result should be the system prompt. Attempt to power on the computer with both the battery pack and the AC adapter connected. Attempt to power on the computer with only the charged battery pack. In case of operating system load failure, attempt to load the operating system from a floppy disk. In the case of a completely drained battery, power off the computer. Leave the battery installed and then connect the AC adapter to the computer. Plug the AC adapter into the wall outlet and wait 10-15 minutes before powering on the computer. If all of these fail, check: AC adapter cube Main battery Control panel (power switch) Power board Main board In the case of incorrect LED indicators, check: LED cable connection Control panel (LED board) Main board Troubleshooting Video If video is set for default operation, the system should display on the LCD panel. If the user had CRT toggled on (FN+F10) prior to powering the system off, it is reset to LCD when the system is powered back on. Refer to the User's Guide for the default video settings. Adjust brightness and contrast controls. If required and if possible, attach a VGA monitor and toggle CRT on (FN+F10) to help determine if the LCD panel is at fault. Then Check: Setup Cables connecting top case module to LCD Main board If there is no brightness, check: Control panel Top case Main board If there is no contrast, check: Control panel Power board Top case Main board TROUBLESHOOTING KEYBOARD Normal Condition: Keyboard feedback click and NUMLOCK are on. CAPSLOCK, SCROLLLOCK and numeric keypad are, by default, off. This is indicated in the LED panel above the keyboard. NOTE: The user may have changed some of these defaults in the SETUP Utility program (CTRL+ALT+S). Check: Keyboard flexible cable connection Keyboard Main board If you attempting to change the keyboard and it does not function correctly, check the jumper JP2 near the coprocessor socket. Then check: Main board. TROUBLESHOOTING I/O PORTS Normal Condition: I/O Ports (parallel, serial, PCMCIA, and mouse/keyboard) default to on. VGA display defaults to LCD. (Toggles on/off with FN+F10.) NOTE: The user may have made changes in the SETUP Utility program to disable the serial port and the parallel port. Then check: Main board TROUBLESHOOTING FDD Normal Condition: FDD should read and write 720K and 1.44M floppy disks. Make sure that the cause is not a bad or series of floppy disks. Then check: FDD/flexible cable connection HDD Main board TROUBLESHOOTING HDD Normal Condition: The drive should read and write data. If it fails to do so, check the Setup program. The User's Guide provides instructions on setting passwords for the computer. Should the password not be holding (you set it and it doesn't "stick"), check the jumper settings.
