Windows 95/3.X Faxback Doc. # 31715 Installing the Support CD Aptiva Cxx Series Machines There are two officially sanctioned methods of using the Support Library CD with the new Cxx Series Aptiva machines. These methods represent two approaches to using software in harmony with the "Protected Mode" demo installed on these machines. Method 1: Create a shortcut to the Support Library 1. Press any key to access the demo menu screen. 2. Press CTRL-C to access the password screen. Enter your password. Click on Return To Windows. 3. Create a Shortcut to the Support Library CD: - Right-click on the Desktop, then left click on New, then on Shortcut. - In the Command Line field, type: G:\SUPPORT1.EXE - Click Next. - Type Support Library - Click Finish. 4. Insert the Support Library CD. 5. Double-click the Support Library shortcut to launch the Support Library. Method 2: Unprotect the Aptiva Demo The "Protected Mode" Aptiva demo prevents normal operation of Windows 95's Auto-Run feature. To utilize Auto Run, the demo must be toggled to the "Unprotected" mode. 1. Press any key to access the demo menu screen. 2. Press CTRL-C to access the password screen. Enter your password. Click on Return To Windows. 3. Create a Shortcut to File Manager: - Right-click on the Desktop, then left click on New, then on Shortcut. - In the Command Line field, type: C:\WINDOWS\WINFILE.EXE - Click Next. - Type File Manager - Click Finish. 4. Double-click the File Manger shortcut to launch File Manager. 5. Open the C:\APTDEMO\INSTORE directory 6. Double-click on UNPROTEC.PIF. You will be instructed to insert the diagnostics CD and type the CD-ROM drive letter (the drive letter for the CD-ROM is G.) 7. Click on Start, Shutdown, Restart the Computer. Insert the Support Library CD to automatically run the Support Library. If the Support Library CD fails to launch automatically, please follow these steps to enable Windows 95's Auto Run feature: 1. From the Desktop, click the Start Button. Choose Settings, then click on Control Panel. 2. From the Control Panel, double-click on System. 3. From the System screen, click the Device Manager tab. One of the devices listed will be "CD-ROM". Double-click on CD-ROM and the CD-ROM model name will appear as a "branch" directly below CD-ROM. Click on the model name to highlight it, then click the Properties button at the bottom of the Device Manager window. 4. From the Properties screen, click on the Settings tab. Examine the Options section in the middle of this screen and look for "Auto Insert Notification." This option should be selected or "checked." If not, click on the box to select this option. 5. Click OK. 6. Click OK again. The following dialog box will appear: "You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect. Do you want to restart now?" 7. Click Yes. The computer will restart. 8. Now insert the CD in the drive. Windows 95 should now automatically execute the program and take you into the Support Library CD menu. Aptiva Axx/Mxx Series Machines: The July 1996 Tandy Retail Services Support Library CD uses the Auto Run feature of Windows 95 to automatically launch the Support Library when the CD is loaded into the drive. For best performance, please exit or disable the Aptiva Demo. Instructions for disabling the Aptiva Demo are listed in Section II. If the Support Library CD fails to launch automatically, please follow these steps to enable Windows 95's Auto Run feature: 1. From the Desktop, click the Start Button. Choose Settings, then click on Control Panel. 2. From the Control Panel, double-click on System. 3. From the System screen, click the Device Manager tab. One of the devices listed will be "CD-ROM". Double-click on CD-ROM and the CD-ROM model name will appear as a "branch" directly below CD-ROM. Windows 95 should now automatically execute the program and take you into the Support Library CD menu. **NOTE** If the "Auto Insert Notification" option is not available, your CD-ROM does not support the Auto Run feature. You can still install the Support Library CD by following the instructions for installing the CD under Windows 3.1, listed in Section III. Section II Disable the Aptiva Demo: 1. Start the computer. It should boot directly to Windows. If not, then start Windows. The self running Aptiva Demo begins. 2. Press CTRL-C two times to bring up the Password window. 3. Enter your password, then click OK or press ENTER. 4. Choose Exit To Windows from the list that appears, then click OK or press ENTER. 5. Once you are returned to Program Manager, click on FILE, then RUN. 6. On the Command Line, type in SYSEDIT, and click OK or press ENTER. The System Configuration Editor opens. 7. Click on the title bar for the C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI window. The WIN.INI file then moves to the front so it can be edited. 8. Press the down arrow until the flashing cursor is in front of RUN=C:\APTDEMO\APTDEMO.EXE 9. Press the semi-colon key, ( ; ) to insert a semi-colon in front of the RUN= line. 10. Close the System Configuration Editor by clicking on FILE, then EXIT. 11. Answer YES to save the changes to the WIN.INI. Section III Using the CD in Windows 3.1 1. Insert the Support Library CD. 2. From the Progam Manger screen, click on File, then Run. 3. Type into the Command Line Field: G:\SETUP and then press . (G is the drive letter for the CD-ROM.) 4. The installation program will display the following dialog box: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | Please enter the drive or path containing the TANDY Retail Services | | Support Library source files. | | | | Install from: D:\WINPROGS | | | | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Change "D:\WINPROGS" to "G:\WINPROGS". 6. Click Continue. 7. Click Continue to accept the terms of the License Agreement and the installation will be complete. **Note** If you do not have a copy of VBRUN300.DLL in your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, the Support Library CD will NOT install. To install this important file and the Support Library CD, click File, then Run. At the Command Line prompt type: D:\WINPROGS\SETUP (JJ/DD/BKL-09/11/96)
