IBM Aptiva Mxx series M50/M51/M30/M31/M41/M53/M71/M63/M55 (250-0440/1/2/3/4/5/50/53) Configuring for Games Faxback Doc. # 33015 This article applies to the Aptiva 2144 M31, M51, M52, and M63 desktop models, and the 2168 M41, M53, M55, M56, M57, M61, M62, M71, M72 mini-tower models, which come pre-loaded with Windows 95 installed. These files can be used as a guide for other computers using Windows 95, but they will not work correctly if you just copy them to your system. These AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files have been edited to provide three options when you boot your system. The first option will load Window 95 using the original configuration with which your system came pre-loaded. The second option will boot to the DOS prompt, and it provides expanded memory for DOS games that require expanded memory. The third option also boots to the DOS prompt, but it has EMM386 disabled, which is required by some newer DOS games. You can run Windows 95 from the latter two options by typing "WIN" at the DOS prompt. You will need to change the MSDOS.SYS file to use the new files. To do this, select Start, then Programs, and then the MS-DOS prompt. Type the following commands at the DOS prompt: CD \ ATTRIB -H -S -R -A MSDOS.SYS EDIT MSDOS.SYS When editing the file, change "BootGUI=1" to "BootGUI=0". Then save the file and exit the editor. Type the following command to restore the attributes of the MSDOS.SYS file: ATTRIB +H +S +R +A MSDOS.SYS Then reboot the computer to let the changes take effect. NOTE: To get the most free memory in DOS, run FASTCFG at the DOS prompt, and configure it to use the first option for Sound Blaster Pro emulation and no modem. This will remove a 50KB driver file that uses much of your conventional or upper memory. Here are the two files: **** AUTOEXEC.BAT **** @ECHO OFF PATH C:\TCPDOS\BIN;C:\MWW\DLL;C:\MWD\MANAGER;C:\PS1TOOLS C:\PS1TOOLS\RESUME.EXE ECHO Y | LOCK C: > NUL C:\PS1TOOLS\PS1PFILE.EXE UNLOCK C: > NUL SET MWROOT=C:\MWD SET LIBPATH=C:\MWD\MANAGER SET MWPATH=C:\MWD\MANAGER;C:\MWD\MWGAMES REM The following is used by DOS games to recognize Sound Blaster hardware.
