IBM Aptiva A40, C66 (250-0451,8) Dialer Faxback Doc. # 33120 A Summary of Dialer Settings Enter Dialer settings to provide the Aptiva Operator with standard access codes and calling card information that you use. The Aptiva Operator appends these codes to any telephone numbers that you choose from one of the following sources: the Address Book, the Speed Dial list in the Aptiva Telephone window, or the lists in the Choose Recipients dialog box within the Fax Center. If you enter a number in Aptiva Telephone "by hand" (by typing, or by clicking on the dialing pad, then clicking the Dial button) the Operator dials only what you have entered. To open the Dialer Settings dialog box 1. In the Operator dialog box, click on Settings. 2. In the Settings dialog box, click on Dialer. Settings Summary Use To Default Dial Type Identify the mode of dialing - pulse, or tone - that the Aptiva Operator should use. Dialing Prefix for Enter the codes or numbers you want added for Direct Calls local, long distance or international telephone numbers. Current Country Enter your current country and area code. These Code/Current Area numbers are for reference only. Code Set up calling cards Use these settings to enter calling card information that you would like the Aptiva Operator to dial for you. Dialer Setting Definitions Default Dial Type Identifies the mode of dialing used by the Aptiva Operator. Possible settings are: Tone - If your telephone line supports Tone dialing this (the default setting is recommended. Pulse - If your telephone line does not support Tone, choose Pulse. Dialing Prefix for Direct Calls Identifies the standard access codes you use to get an outside telephone line or any codes dialed before you make local, long distance, and international calls. When using some telephone services, it is necessary for a pause to occur after the access code before the rest of the number is entered. Use the comma character (,) to insert a pause after any code. Each comma causes a one second pause. Dial xx for long distance calls: Some phone systems require that you dial an access code before dialing any telephone number outside the building. For example, you may need to dial a "9" to get an outside line. You may also want to dial other codes before dialing a long distance number. For example, dialing "*70" to turn off call waiting. This field is also used to enter a "1" when dialing a long distance number if necessary. If you do not need to dial any prefix codes When dialing a long distance number, leave this setting blank. Dial xx for local calls: Some phone systems require that you dial an access code before dialing any telephone number outside the building. For example, you may need to dial "9" to get an outside line. You may also want to dial other codes before dialing a local number. For example, dialing "*70" to turn off call waiting. If you do not need to dial any prefix codes when dialing a local number leave this setting blank. Dial xx for international calls: Some phone systems require that you dial an access code before dialing any telephone number outside the building. For example, you may need to dial a "9" to get an outside line for an international call. You may also want to dial other codes before dialing an international number. For example, dialing "*70" to turn off call waiting. This field is also used to enter a "011" when dialing an international number if necessary. If you do not need to dial any prefix codes when dialing an international number, leave this setting blank. The Operator only adds dialing code information to telephone numbers that you choose from either the Speed Dial list or the Address Book. If you enter a number in Aptiva Telephone "by hand" (by typing, or by clicking on the dialing pad, then clicking the Dial button) the Operator dials exactly what you have entered. Current Area Code Enter your local area code in this field. Current Country code Enter your country code(s) in this field. Use Calling Cards This list includes all the cards you entered with the Setup Calling Cards settings. Under Use Calling Card choose the calling card that you expect to use when you have the Aptiva Operator dial long distance or International numbers. Whenever the Operator initiates automatic dialing, it displays a "Dialing" dialog box, in which you can choose to either use this default calling card or not. Set up Calling Cards You can enter a list of calling cards that you want the Aptiva Operator to use when dialing telephone numbers. You can change the contents of this list on an ongoing basis. To use settings, click on the Setup Calling Cards button. The Setup Calling Cards dialog box appears, displaying a description of the first calling card (if any) in its current list. To add a calling card In the Setup Calling Cards dialog box: 1. Click on the Clear button, to clear the current display. 2. At Carrier Name Type the name of the company providing the calling card service. 3. At Access Number enter the number that you use to connect to this service provider, when using your card. In the list to the right of the number field, choose: Dial before, if the access number must be entered before the telephone number is entered. See Appendix B: Special Dialing Considerations, for examples. Dial after, if the access number must be entered after dialing the telephone number. Do not dial, if for some reason it is appropriate to suspend the entry of this number. 4. At Account Number enter your personal calling card sequence. In the list to the right of the number field, choose: Dial before, if the access number must be entered before the telephone number is entered. Dial after, if the access number must be entered after dialing the telephone number. Do not dial, if for some reason you want to "turn off" the use of this number. (One way this choice might be useful, is to switch from the number you enter here, to one of the alternative numbers entered at the Other Number fields. 5. Optionally, use the Other Number fields to enter alternative numbers you may have with this service provider. 6. Click on the Add button to add the new calling card definition to your list. NOTE: The direct dial prefixes are not added to the number for calling card cards. You must enter any codes to turn off call waiting or to access an outside line in the appropriate calling card setup field. To delete a calling card 1. In the Carrier Name list, click on the name of the calling card. 2. Click on the Delete button. To update a calling card definition 1. In the Carrier Name list, click on the name of the calling card. 2. Change information in any of the fields. 3. Click on the Update button. Defining a Modem Communications Link You can start your favorite Windows 3.1 communications program from within the Aptiva Communications Center using the Modem command button. To bring up modem communications settings 1. In the Operator dialog box, click on the Settings button. 2. In the Settings dialog box, click on Modem. Modem Communications Settings In the Modem Communications dialog box, you can either: Type the full path and file name of the communication program you want to use.
