AST Advantage! 6033s (250-0403) Groliers Video Issue Faxback Doc. # 9738 The AST 6033SX system comes standard with MSVideo for Windows version 1.1. In the CD-ROM upgrade kit available from Creative labs is the Groliers MultiMedia Encyclopedia. This uses the MSVideo for Windows version 1.0. Video/animation clips from this CD do not run correctly on these AST systems. The video gives a blank square with proper sound, and "jittery" animation. The way to correct this is to 'downgrade' the version of MSVideo used on this computer system. The following procedure should be followed: 1. Install the Grolier's CD onto the system. When prompted to install 1.0 version of the MSVideo utility, click on OK to install. 2. After completion of installation, click on the Grolier's icon to load. The black square with movement indicating animation appears, but with no animation. 3. With the Grolier's CD still in the CD-ROM drive, expand these two files by typing the following: expand d:\0msvideo\mciavi.dr_ c:\windows\system\mciavi.drv expand d:\0msvideo\msvideo.dl_ c:\windows\system\msvideo.dll expand d:\0msvideo\msvidc.dr_ c:\windows\system\msvidc.drv expand d:\0msvideo\dispdib.dl_ c:\windows\system\dispdib.dll 4. Check for proper operation by clicking on the Grolier's icon. The square should come up, with video pictures showing the animation. Note: Some of the newer AST Advantage machines require a different directory entry for the expand commands. If you receive an error message stating that the directory does not exist, use the following lines: expand d:\0msvideo\mciavi.dr_ c:\NGMECL\mciavi.drv expand d:\0msvideo\msvideo.dl_ c:\NGMECL\msvideo.dll expand d:\0msvideo\msvidc.dr_ c:\NGMECL\system\msvidc.drv expand d:\0msvideo\dispdib.dl_ c:\NGMECL\system\dispdib.dll If you still experience problems with the videos, try the following steps: Add the following line to the WIN.INI file, in the [DRAWDIB] section: DVA=0 The "dva=0" entry turns off direct video access (DVA) and DCI, components of Microsoft Video For Windows. DVA and DCI allow video images to be sent directly to the screen. If an application detects the display type incorrectly, problems can occur using DVA and DCI. Some of these problems can be severe (such as general protection (GP) faults in Gdi.exe). When you turn off DVA and DCI, video images must be drawn through GDI. Although using GDI can be slower than direct access, it is safer. Change the video driver to the Generic SVGA video driver provided with MicroSoft Windows 3.11 If you are in Windows exit to the DOS prompt. 1. Type "C:" and press . 2. Type "CD \WINDOWS" . 3. Now type "SETUP" . 4. On the Windows setup screen, cursor up and highlight the display line. The default driver is set to "CL-GD5426/28 v1.43 Windows drivers". Highlight it and press . 5. Now move the cursor down to the Super VGA hires and select "Super VGA 640 x 480 256 Colors" by highlighting it and press . 6. Press on "Accept the configuration shown above". Press on use current driver. If Windows setup asks for a path to the Windows 3.11 disk type "A:\" . When you restart windows, your SVGA display driver will be running. (/RDS/BKL-03/26/96)
