TRC-55 (210-0151) Controls and Functions Faxback Doc. # 16734 This brief description of each control will help you become acquainted with the Transceiver and aid you in the proper operation of it. MICROPHONE Jack - plug the dynamic mic into this jack. The push-to-talk button on the side of the mic is for activating the Transmitter. PHONES Jack - plug headphones into this jack for most efficient receiver listening. Phones are especially useful when operating in areas of high noise (construction sites, factories, etc.). P.A. GAIN Control - is used to adjust the level of sound when using the unit as a Public Address amplifier. SWR CAL Control - is used when setting up the calibration point for the SWR Meter operation. With an antenna connected, the transmitter is keyed and with CAL button pressed in, adjust this control for a meter reading to the red CAL mark. This sets the reference for the SWR circuit; press CAL again and you will read SWR on the SWR Meter. RF GAIN Control - effectively controls the sensitivity of the RF Amplification stages of the Receiver. It's particularly useful when receiving strong local signals which might tend to over- load the receiver. FINE TUNING Switch - use to tune in slightly off- frequency stations. Set it to the position which provides the highest S-meter reading. It also is helpful to minimize adjacent channel interference. SQUELCH Control - use this control to cut out annoying background noise when no signal is being received; but when properly set it will permit signals to come through. VOLUME On/OFF Control - Use this control to turn the power on and off, and to adjust the level of the sound from the speaker. Channel Selector - Use this control to select any one of the 23 channels available. Transmit Lights - when Transmitting, the ON THE AIR light will be on. When you speak into the microphone, MODULATION will flash. CAL Button - press in when using SWR CAL control to set reference for SWR measurement. Press again to return to normal. PA Button - press in and the entire unit will function as a 4-watt Public Address Amplifier. When the PA button is "in," the Transmitter will not function -- the Microphone button turns on the Public Address Function. For PA operation, you must have a PA speaker connected to the PA SPEAKER jack on the back. Press again to return to normal operation. ANL Button (Automatic Noise Limiter) - press in to cut out annoying hash- type noise. Press again to release this function. NB Button (Noise Blanker) - press in to cut out annoying impulse-type noise (such as ignition noise). Press again to release this function. RF-S and SWR Meters - give visual indication of signal strengths. When receiving, the RF-S Meter shows the strength of incoming signals -- in S units. When you transmit, RF-S shows the relative output power from the Transmitter and SWR (when used together with CAL button and SWR CAL control) will show the Standing Wave ratio of the antenna system. Jacks on the Rear Panel ANTENNA Connector - accepts PL-259 coaxial connector from the antenna system. EXT. SPEAKER jack - connect an external 8-ohm speaker to this jack (automatically disconnects the built-in speaker). PA SPEAKER jack - connect an 8-ohm Public Address speaker to this jack when using the unit as a Public Address amplifier. POWER connectors - plug power cables into these receptacles. The connector at the right is for 120 volts AC; the one at the left is for 12 volts DC. If you plug in both connectors, DC will be functional, AC will not. For AC operation use AC power cable only.
