TRC-230 (210-1668) Power Sources Faxback Doc. # 16744 You can power the walkie-talkie from any of these power sources: Alkaline batteries (using the supplied battery case) Rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (using the supplied battery case) Standard AC power (using an optional 12-volt DC power supply) Vehicle battery power (using an optional DC cigarette lighter adapter). Using Batteries You can use the supplied battery case to power the walkie-talkie from eight AA alkaline batteries (such as Cat. No. 23-552) with the two supplied dummy batteries or ten AA nickel-cadmium batteries (such as Cat. No. 23-125). Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. If the walkie-talkie is on, turn OFF/VOLUME fully counterclockwise until it clicks to turn it off. 2. To remove the battery case, while pressing and holding up the battery case latch on the walkie-talkie, slide out the battery case. Caution: Be careful not to short the terminals on the battery case by touching them with conducting materials, such as rings, bracelets, or keys. The battery case or the batteries might overheat and burn. 3. Insert the edge of a coin into the slot on top of the battery case, then twist the coin to open the case. 4. If necessary, remove and discard the old batteries. CAUTIONS: Dispose of batteries properly; do not bury or burn them. Never leave dead or weak batteries in the battery case. Even if you use rechargeable batteries, do not discard the two dummy batteries. You must use them whenever you use alkaline batteries with this walkie-talkie. 5. Insert eight AA alkaline batteries and the two supplied dummy batteries or ten AA nickel-cadmium batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ or -) marked inside both sides of the battery case. NOTE: You must charge new nickel-cadmium batteries before you can use them (see "Charging Nickel-Cadmium Batteries"). CAUTIONS: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. Do not mix old and new batteries (such as alkaline and carbon-type or different capacity rechargeables). 6. Press the battery case back together and slide it back onto the walkie-talkie. CAUTION: If you do not plan to use walkie-talkie for several days, remove the battery case from the walkie-talkie. To check the battery power, turn on the walkie-talkie and press and hold down LIGHT. If the batteries have enough power, LOW BATT lights. If the batteries do not have enough power, LOW BATT does not light. If battery power is low, replace the batteries or recharge them if you are using nickel-cadmium batteries. Important Information About the EXT PWR and CHG Jacks The walkie-talkie has two external jacks - EXT PWR and CHG. It is important that you understand the purpose of each jack before you connect any battery charger or adapter to the walkie-talkie. The EXT PWR jack on the right side of the walkie-talkie powers the walkie -talkie and disconnects the internal batteries. You can connect an external power source (12-volt DC power supply or DC cigarette lighter power cable) to this jack, regardless of the type of batteries you install. The CHG jack on the battery case supplies power to charge nickel-cadmium batteries. Connect a battery charger (Cat. No. 21-516) to the CHG jack only when nickel-cadmium batteries are installed. WARNING: Never try to recharge non-rechargeable batteries, they become very hot and could explode. CAUTIONS: Use only the recommended battery charger to recharge the batteries in the battery case. Other chargers could damage the walkie-talkie or the batteries. Do not overcharge nickel-cadmium batteries. To prevent damaging nickel-cadmium batteries, never charge them in an area where the temperature is above 90 degrees F or below 40 degrees F. Follow these steps to charge nickel-cadmium batteries in the case. 1. If the walkie-talkie is on, turn OFF/VOLUME fully counterclockwise until it clicks to turn it off. 2. Connect the battery charger's barrel plug to the CHG jack, then plug the battery charger's plug into a standard AC outlet. It takes about 8 to 16 hours to recharge new or fully discharged nickel- cadmium batteries. Subsequent charges take about 8 hours. NOTE: You can use an external charger (such as Cat. No. 23-134, not supplied) to recharge the nickel-cadmium batteries. After removing the batteries from the battery case, follow the instructions that come with the external charger. Important: The walkie-talkie can use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries. At the end of the batteries' useful life, they must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that might be available are: municipal curbside collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail-back programs. Using AC Power To power the walkie-talkie from AC power, you need these items. 12-volt DC power supply (such as Cat. No. 22-504) DC cigarette lighter power cable (such as Cat. No. 27-1533) Cigarette lighter accessory outlet (such as Cat. No. 27-1539) NOTE: Most 12-volt DC power supplies plug into a standard AC outlet to produce DC power. Before connecting your walkie-talkie to a 12- volt DC power supply, read and follow the instructions included with the power supply. CAUTIONS: Never insert the DC cigarette lighter power cable's barrel plug into the CHG jack. The DC cigarette lighter power cable must be able to deliver 12 volts, its center tip must be set to positive, its barrel plug must correctly fit the walkie-talkie's EXT PWR jack, and it must be fuse-protected with a 2-amp fuse. The recommended power cable meets these specifications. Using a power cable that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the walkie- talkie or the power cable. Follow these steps to power the walkie-talkie from AC power. 1. Connect the cigarette lighter accessory outlet's black wire to the negative (-) terminal of the DC power supply. Then connect the cigarette lighter accessory outlet's red wire to the positive (+) terminal of the DC power supply. This wire supplies power to operate the walkie-talkie. 2. Insert the DC cigarette lighter power cable's barrel plug into the EXT PWR jack. 3. Using the double-sided foam tape supplied with the cigarette lighter accessory outlet, mount the cigarette accessory outlet on top of the DC power supply. 4. Plug the other end of the DC cigarette lighter power cable into the cigarette lighter accessory outlet. 5. Connect the DC power supply to a standard AC outlet and turn on the power supply. Using Your Vehicle's Battery You can power your walkie-talkie from your vehicle's cigarette lighter socket with an optional DC cigarette lighter power cable (such as Cat. No. 27-1533). CAUTIONS: Your vehicle must have a 12-volt, negative-ground electrical system. Most vehicles have this type of system. If you are not sure about your vehicle, check with your vehicle's dealer. Never insert the DC cigarette lighter power cable's barrel plug into the CHG jack. Follow these steps to power the walkie-talkie from your vehicle's battery. To power the walkie-talkie from your vehicle's battery, insert the DC cigarette lighter power cable's barrel plug into the EXT PWR jack, then plug the power cable's other end into your vehicle's cigarette lighter socket. When you finish using the DC cigarette lighter power cable, disconnect it from the cigarette lighter before you disconnect it from the walkie-talkie. NOTE: If the walkie-talkie does not operate properly when you use a DC cigarette lighter power cable, unplug the cable from the cigarette lighter socket and clean the socket to remove ashes and other debris. USING THE BELT CLIP You can use the attached belt clip to make the walkie-talkie easier to use when you are on the go. Simply slide the belt clip over your belt or waistband. (llg/all-08/29/95)
