TRC-484 40-Channel CB (210-1556) Installation Faxback Doc. # 19198 MOUNTING THE CB The most common mounting location for this CB is under your vehicle's dashboard. To use your CB as a base station, see "Using the CB as a Base Station." (BELOW) When choosing a mounting location in a vehicle, be sure the CB is: Easy to reach Not in the way of the vehicle's operation Not directly in the path of heating vents Located so passengers have enough leg room To avoid damaging your vehicle's electrical systems, contact your vehicle's manufacturer before you install the TRC-484 to find out the proper mounting locations, antenna locations, and power and antenna cable routing guidelines. Follow these steps to mount the CB. 1. Using the mounting bracket as a template, mark the positions for the mounting screw holes. 2. In the marked positions, drill holes slightly smaller than the screws. CAUTION: Be careful not to drill into or damage wires or other objects behind the mounting surface. 3. Mount the bracket using the larger supplied screws and lock washers. 4. Attach the microphone holder to either side of the CB using the smaller supplied screws and lock washers. 5. Attach the CB to the mounting bracket using the supplied rubber washers and mounting knobs. 6. Insert the microphone cord's plug into the microphone jack on the front of the CB. Be sure to match the notch on the plug with the one on the jack. NOTE: To unplug the microphone, press the bottom of the microphone's plug and pull the plug from the jack. Never pull on the microphone's cable. 7. Slide the microphone onto the microphone holder. INSTALLING AN ANTENNA Your local Radio Shack store sells a wide variety of mobile CB antennas that you can mount on your vehicle's trunk lid, gutter, bumper, roof, or any flat metal surface. Most of these antennas do not require you to drill a hole in you vehicle. Once you choose an antenna, mount it according to the antenna's instructions. For the best results, mount the antenna: As high as possible As far as possible from sources of electrical noise (ignition systems, gauges, etc.) Vertically After you mount the antenna, route the antenna's cable to the CB and connect the cable to the CB's ANT jack. CAUTIONS: Do not run the cable over sharp edges or moving parts that could damage it. Do not run the cable next to power lines or other CB antenna cables. Do not run the cable through areas in the engine compartment that produce extreme heat. For optimum performance, you should adjust your antenna for the minimum possible standing wave ratio (SWR). A ratio below 2.0:1 is acceptable; below 1.5:1 is more desirable. Your local Radio Shack store can provide you with advice and recommend equipment to use if you need help in making this adjustment. CONNECTING VEHICLE BATTERY POWER The TRC-484 is designed for connection to a 12-volt negative-ground electrical system. 1. Connect the red wire (with the in-line fuse holder) to a terminal in your vehicle's fuse box that provides power only when you turn on the ignition or set the ignition switch to ACC. 2. Connect the black and red ground wire to a clean, metal part of your vehicle that is not insulated from the chassis by a plastic part. CONNECTING AN EXTERNAL SPEAKER You can connect an optional external speaker to the CB. Use an 8-ohm speaker with a 1/8-inch plug, such as Cat. No. 21-549. Insert the plug into the CB's EXT SP jack. USING THE CB AS A BASE STATION We designed your CB for mobile use. However, you can use it as a CB base station. For a base installation, we recommend you use the following: USING THE CB AS A BASE STATION We designed your CB for mobile use. However, you can use it as a CB base station. For a base installation, we recommend you use the following: 12-volt DC power supply (Cat. No. 22-504) Base station antenna (Cat. No. 21-967) External 8-Ohm speaker (Cat. No. 21-549) Follow these steps to install the CB as a base station. 1. Connect the antenna to the CB's ANT jack. WARNING: When installing or removing a base-station CB antenna, use extreme caution. If the antenna starts to fall, let it go! It could contact overhead power lines. If the antenna touches the power line, contact with the antenna, mast, cable, or guy wires can cause electrocution and death. Call the power company to remove the antenna. DO NOT attempt to do so yourself. 2. Connect an external speaker to the CB's EXT SP jack. 3. Connect the CB's red wire to the positive (+) terminal of your power supply. 4. Connect the CB's black wire to the negative (-) terminal of the power supply. 5. Plug the power supply into a standard AC outlet. (JC/all-02/19/96)
