2-Hour Universal Charger (230-0239) Operation Faxback Doc. # 9669 GENERAL CHARGING HINTS For best results, keep these hints in mind: Continually overcharging batteries can shorten their life and might cause them to explode. Charge only nickel-cadmium batteries in your charger. If you try to charge other types of batteries, they might explode. Completely discharge the batteries before you charge them. Repeatedly charging batteries that are not fully discharged can shorten their useful life. It is normal for batteries to become warm while charging. Never mix different-sized batteries in the same charging chamber. Do not try to charge a battery other than the listed sizes by connecting the battery's terminals to the charging contacts with a piece of metal. Do not charge batteries when the room temperature is above 86ยบ Fahrenheit. This could permanently reduce the battery's ability to accept a charge. CHARGING BATTERIES Follow these steps to charge batteries: 1. Place the in either or both battery chambers, as indicated by each chamber's polarity marks (+ and -). 2. Plug the charger's power adapter into a standard AC outlet. Press and hold the red button for about 2 seconds to begin the charging cycle. The indicator for each filled battery chamber turns on. Note: If the indicator does not turn on when you press the red button, be sure you have properly inserted the batteries. If you installed them correctly, remove the batteries and clean the batteries' and charger's contact surfaces. Then reinstall the batteries and press and hold the red button again. If the problem persists, either the charger or one of the batteries you are trying to charge is faulty. The charger automatically turns off in 2 hours. The indicator also goes off, and batteries other than 9-volt batteries are fully charged. Notes: You need to charge a 9-volt battery for about 7 hours. The charger does not automatically stop charging 9-volt batteries. Remove 9- volt batteries from the charger after 7 hours. If the indicator turns off about 2 minutes after you press the red button, the batteries you are trying to charge might be faulty. If the charge cycle is interrupted by a power failure, and the interruption lasts less than 5 seconds, the charger completes the charge cycle. If the interruption lasts more than 5 seconds, the charging indicator turns off when the power returns to normal. Press and hold the red button for 2 seconds to restart the charge cycle. If you do not know how long the batteries charged before the interruption, do not restart the charger. Use the batteries until they completely discharge, to avoid overcharging the batteries. IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Do not expose the charger to any rain or excessive moisture.
