Electronic Sign Board (630-0950) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 18115 SETTING UP THE SIGN BOARD You can place the sign board on a flat surface or mount it on a wall. If you plan to connect the display to the security system, choose a location where people can see the alarm message, such as in a window. CAUTION: This sign board is only designed for indoor-use. For reliable operation, install the sign board where it is not exposed to water or extreme heat Placing the Sign Board on a Table/Stand Set the sign board on a stable, flat surface (such as a table). To adjust the sign board's angle, use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws on the sign board's back plate. Adjust the back plate for the desired viewing angle. Then, tighten the screws. Mounting the Sign Board on a Wall Follow these steps to mount the sign board on the wall. 1. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the hinge screws on the back plate. 2. Use the back plate as a guide and drill two 1/16-inch holes in the wall so that the holes are 5 7/8 inches apart (horizontally). 3. Remove the supplied screws from their shipping package and thread them into the holes in the wall, letting them extend 1/4 inch from the wall. 4. Align the back plate's keyhole slots with the screws in the wall. Then, press the back plate against the wall and slide it down onto the screws. Tighten the screws. 5. Attach the sign board to the back plate and replace the washers and screws as shown. 6. Adjust the sign board to the desired angle. Then, tighten the hinge screws. CONNECTING POWER You can only operate the sign board from a standard household outlet. We recommend that you also install batteries for back-up power for memory. AC Power Plug the supplied AC adapter into the sign board's 10V jack. Plug the other end into any standard AC outlet. CAUTION: You must use an AC adapter that supplies 10 volts and delivers at least 1 amp. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must correctly fit the sign board's 10V jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the sign board or the adapter. Memory Back-Up Battery Power The sign board uses two AAA batteries for back-up battery power for memory. For long battery life, we recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack's Cat. No. 23-555. Follow these steps to install the backup batteries. NOTE: When you replace the batteries, keep the AC adapter plugged into the sign board and an AC outlet. Otherwise, the stored messages are lost. 1. Open the keyboard cover. 2. Slide the battery compartment door to the right and lift it off. 3. Insert the two batteries, as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the compartment. 4. Replace the battery compartment door and close the keyboard cover. To test memory back-up battery power, turn on the sign board. Press OFF/END. Then, press BATT. If the indicator does not light, replace the batteries. Power Failures The sign board's memory holds the messages until you delete them or power fails for an extended period of time. The power source that fails and the length of time it fails determines whether the sign board keeps the messages in memory. If AC and battery power fail, the sign board keeps messages in memory for 10 seconds. To keep the messages, AC or battery power must resume within the 10 seconds. When AC power resumes, the sign board performs its self test. If messages were saved and you were editing or entering a message when power failed, the sign board detects an error during its test and shows PLEASE RE-EDIT INCOMPLETE MESSAGE # ____ BY PRESSING "EDIT/DELETE" KEY. If this appears, follow the steps in "Editing a Stored Message." If the sign board has no power for more than 10 seconds, all messages are lost and the sign board defaults to the preprogrammed messages. CONNECTING TO A SECURITY SYSTEM You can connect the sign board to the security system so that when an intruder triggers the alarm, the sign board shows an alarm message to security personnel or anyone passing by your store or home. Follow these steps to connect the sign board to a security system. 1. Plug the supplied cord into the ALARM jack on the side of the sign board. 2. Connect the cord's two wires to a pair of normally open terminals on the security system. These terminals must not supply power. (EB 11/15/95)
