BLACKJACK RULES The computer plays Las Vegas-style Blackjack with a standard 52-card deck, consisting of 4 cards of each value, from Ace through King. Before you start playing the game, you should know the basic rules of Blackjack. OBJECT OF THE GAME The object of Blackjack is to defeat the dealer by attempting to get a higher total than the dealer without going over 21 points. CARD VALUES The card values are easy to remember. Each card is counted at its face value. For example, a 4 is worth 4 points, and an 8 is worth 8 points. The 10 and face cards, (Jack, Queen, and King) count as 10 points each, and are often called the 10-count cards. You have the option of counting an Ace as 1 point or 11 points, depending on which is better for you. BETTING You place your bet before the dealer deals the cards. If the dealer wins the hand, he collects the bet. If you win the hand, you collect the bet. Bets are paid off evenly. For example, a 10-point bet wins 10 points. There are only two exceptions: If you get Blackjack (a total of 21 points on the first draw), you get a 3 to 2 payoff - you win 15 points for your 10-point bet. If you doubled your bet, you get a 2 to 1 payoff - you win 20 points for your 10-point bet. WINNING, LOSING, and PUSHING If the total of your hand does not exceed 21 points but is more than the dealer's total, you win. If the dealer's total exceeds 21 points, he busts (loses) and you automatically win. NOTE: The dealer must draw (take a card) on any hand showing 16 points or less, and must stand on all hands totaling 17 to 21 points. If your two-card hand consists of an Ace with any 10-count card, you have Blackjack. If the dealer does not have Blackjack, you are an automatic winner. If at any time your total exceeds 21 points, you bust and automatically lose. If this happens, you always lose your bet, even if the dealer also busts. If the dealer gets Blackjack and you do not, you automatically lose. When you and the dealer have the same total hand (less than 21), the game is a draw, or push. Your bet is returned to you and play continues with the next hand. PLAYING THE GAME 1. Press ON/OFF to turn on the game (if necessary). Note: If you stop playing the game for about 2 minutes, it automatically turns off to save battery power, saving the last game's settings and point total(s) in memory. 2. Choose 1 or 2 players. For One Player - press PLAYER until P1 and 200 appear on the upper left corner of the display. For Two Players - press PLAYER until P1, P2 and 200 points for each player appear on the upper right corner of the display. Note: The computer always plays the dealer's hand. 3. Repeatedly press DECK to choose either 1 or 6 decks for play. 4. Press DEAL. The computer shuffles the cards and music plays. 5. Place your bet. Press BET repeatedly to increase the bet 10 points at a time. The maximum bet is 100 points. The amount you bet appears next to BET on the display. Note: If there are two players, P1 or P2 flashes to indicate whose turn it is to bet. 6. Press DEAL. The computer deals two cards each player and two cards to the dealer. Each player's hand total appears next to his/her cards. Notes: One of the dealer's cards is dealt face up and is called the exposed card. The other is dealt face down and is known as the downcard or hole card. The computer shuffles the cards when the deck is down to its last few cards. 7. Choose your option: Stand, Hit, Double, Split, Insurance or Surrender. See "Choosing Your Options", below. Note: If there are two players, P1 or P2 flashes to indicate whose turn it is to select an option. When you are through, the game automatically plays out the dealer's hand. 8. If you win, WIN appears and the computer automatically adds the points you won to your total. If you lose, the computer subtracts your losses from your total. Notes: If there are two players, P1 or P2 flashes as the computer updates the points for that player. If you lose the game and your points total 0, 0 flashes on the display. 9. Repeat Steps 6-8 to play another hand. Play continues until each player's total points reach 0. To play another game, press PLAYER. 10. Press ON/OFF to turn off the game. CHOOSING YOUR OPTIONS STAND Press STAND if you are satisfied with your hand. Play moves to the next player or the dealer. HIT Press HIT to request an additional card. The computer deals one card each time you press HIT until you press STAND, reach 21 points, or bust. The computer automatically updates and displays your running hand total. DOUBLE Press DOUBLE to double your original bet. The bet is subtracted from your total score and you can take only one more card. Note: You cannot double if your point total is less than your bet. SPLIT If your first two cards are a pair, press SPLIT to split the cards and play two hands. Your bet automatically doubles. H1 (hand 1) or H2 (hand 2) flashes to indicate which hand you are playing. Note: You cannot split if your point total is less than your bet. INSURANCE When the dealer's exposed card is an Ace, INSURANCE flashes on the display. Either player can take insurance (protect your bet) against the dealer having Blackjack. The cost of the insurance is half of your original bet. To accept insurance, press INSURANCE. The insurance bet is subtracted from your total score. To decline insurance, press DEAL, then continue normal play. Notes: You cannot insure your bet if your point total is less than half or your bet. If you want to accept insurance and double or split, you must choose INSURANCE first. If the dealer has Blackjack, you win the insurance bet. If you also have Blackjack, your original bet is added to your total score, but if you do not have Blackjack, you lose your original bet. If the dealer does not have Blackjack, you lose the insurance bet and you can continue to play your hand. SURRENDER After seeing the dealer's exposed card, you might choose to surrender by pressing SURRENDER. You forfeit half of your original bet. Once you press SURRENDER, you do not receive any cards, and play moves to the next player or the dealer. (RF/EB 4/16/96)
