TAD-325 (430-0396) Operation Faxback Doc. # 14142 Installing the Cassette The TAD-325 comes with two tapes: the 30-second, endless-loop outgoing message tape and the C-60 incoming message tape (30 minutes of recording per side). Contact your Radio Shack store to replace these tapes or to purchase tapes of other lengths. 1. Lift open the cassette compartment door. Caution: Be sure to insert both tapes before starting operation. Notes: Replace the outgoing and incoming message tapes once every year or more often if used heavily. Many times a new tape is wound tightly, and this can cause a squeaking sound the first few times you play it. This is normal and will soon disappear. MAKING YOUR OUTGOING MESSAGE Before You Record Use the 30 second, endless-loop tape to record your outgoing message. It can be any length up to 30 seconds. Since callers do not like to wait through a long message, keep your message short. Write your message down, and practice it several times before making the final recording. Some Message Guidelines and Sample Messages Always ask for specific information, such as your caller's name and phone number, so you can return the call. Do not just tell the caller to leave a message. They are expecting to talk to you and might not be prepared to leave a message, or they might not be comfortable talking to a machine, so make your message sound as natural as possible. Be sure your message is not abrupt. Your callers need an explanation of what you want them to do. For example: "You have reached John Doe's telephone. I am unable to answer the telephone right now. When you hear the tone, please leave your name, phone number, and message. I will call you back as soon as possible." "This is the Doe residence. I cannot get to the phone right now, but I will be happy to return your call if you will leave your name and telephone number after the tone. Please speak clearly and directly into the telephone. Thank you." For Your Own Protection Never use your TAD to tell callers that no one is home. When you prepare your message, use a phase like, "I cannot get to the phone right now" instead of "I am not home right now." Announce Only Message The TAD has an Announce Only mode that lets you make an outgoing message that gives specific information but does not let the caller leave a message. This is useful for providing, for example, information about an event. Be sure that your message clearly indicates that the caller cannot leave a message. Recording Your Outgoing Message 1. Be sure that the STOP indicator is on. If not, press STOP. 2. Press ANNOUNCEMENT RECORDING. Wait for a long tone to sound and the ANNOUNCEMENT RECORDING indicator to flash slowly. Your announcement can be any length up to the length of the outgoing tape you are using. Note: If the ANNOUNCE RECORDING indicator starts flashing rapidly when you press ANNOUNCE RECORDING, the TAD is cycling the outgoing message tape to the beginning. Wait for a long tone - the indicator will change to a slow flash. 3. Press PLAY/START. The outgoing message tape starts, and you can record your message. The ANNOUNCE RECORDING indicator changes to a steady illumination. The PLAY/START indicator does not light in this case. 4. From about 8 inches from the microphone, speak your message clearly and in a normal tone of voice. 5. After completing your message, wait a couple of seconds and press STOP. The end-tone is recorded on the outgoing tape, and while the ANNOUNCE RECORDING indicator flashes rapidly, the outgoing tape is automatically positioned to the beginning. When the tape is at the beginning the ANNOUNCE RECORDING indicator goes out, you hear a beep, and the STOP indicator lights. You can make a library of different messages using additional endless- loop cassettes and simply change cassettes when you want to change the message. This way, you will not have to record a new message each time. Notes: Press PLAY/START within 30 seconds after the ANNOUNCE RECORDING indicator begins to flash slowly. If you do not, the TAD returns to the Stop mode and beeps. You then must start over from Step 2. Wait a second or so after pressing PLAY/START before you begin speaking, so you do not lose your first few words. The VOLUME control has no effect while recording. Use it only for playback. If your message exceeds the length of your tape, the TAD automatically stops recording at the end of the tape, and a beep sounds. Try the recording again, by repeating all the above steps. Be careful not to exceed the time limit. Each time you record a message, the previous one is erased. Checking the Outgoing Message 1. Be sure the STOP indicator is on. If it is not, press STOP. 2. Press ANNOUNCE ONLY. The ANNOUNCE ONLY indicator lights, and two short beeps sound. 3. Press PLAY/START. The ANNOUNCE ONLY indictor starts blinking rapidly. Adjust the VOLUME control as desired. The TAD plays back the outgoing message you recorded. 4. After playback is over and the tape cycles to the end, two beeps sound. The ANNOUNCE ONLY indicator changes to a steady illumination. 5. Press STOP. If you do not like the message, press ANNOUNCE RECORDING and repeat the recording steps. Note: If the indicator flashes, the TAD is cycling the outgoing message tape to the beginning. You will hear the outgoing message as the tape cycles if you have set the volume control to a listening level. When the tape is at the beginning, the indicator changes to a steady illumination and you hear two beeps. SETTING THE TAD TO ANSWER CALLS Setting the switches Before setting the TAD to answer calls, set the following three switches. INCOMING MESSAGE Switch This switch determines the maximum incoming message length-30 seconds or 3 minutes. Setting the maximum time does not necessarily waste tape, because if the caller hangs up before using the set time, the TAD automatically stops recording and conserves tape. (See "VOX" and Calling Party Control (CPC" for more information.) CPC Set this switch for the type of CPC signal used by your phone system. If you are not sure about signal types or if your phone system uses no CPC signals at all, see "VOX and Calling Party Control (CPC)." ANSWER Switch This switch determines how quickly the TAD answers the phone. IMMEDIATE - The TAD answers a call on the first ring. DELAY - The TAD answers a call after about four rings. You might prefer to leave the switch set to DELAY. If you are home, you can answer before the fourth ring. If you are not home, the TAD is ready to answer for you. This eliminates the need to reset the mode each time you go in or out. TOLL SAVER - This special feature can save you money during remote operation. If the TAD has received a new message, it will answer on the first ring. If there are no new messages the TAD will take about four rings to answer. Therefore, if you are checking by long-distance and the phone rings two or three times, you can hang up before the fourth ring and save the toll charge. Setting the TAD to Answer Calls and Record Incoming Messages 1. Be sure that the STOP indicator is on. If it is not, press STOP. 2. Press ANSWER to set the TAD to answer calls and record the caller's messages. A tone sounds, and the ANSWER indicator lights steadily. Important: If the incoming message tape becomes full while a message is being recorded, the TAD sounds intermittent tones for three seconds and disconnects the telephone line. If another call does come in, the TAD sounds intermittent tones for three seconds, followed by fifteen seconds of silence. During this fifteen-second silence, it will accept remote commands. If there are no acceptable remote commands, the TAD sounds a short tone and disconnects the telephone line. If the correct remote control code signal comes in during this fifteen- second silence, the TAD accepts the remote signal and enters the mode you want. Notes: If the ANSWER indicator, or ANSWER and PLAY/START indicators flash when you press ANSWER, the TAD is positioning the incoming and outgoing tapes. You can hear the outgoing message as the tape cycles to the beginning if you have set the VOLUME control at listening level. After the tapes are positioned, a beep sounds and the ANSWER indicator lights steadily. A tone is recorded at the end of each incoming message. This beep lets you know where each message ends when you playback the messages. If you have not inserted the incoming message tape, you cannot set the TAD to the Announce Only or the Answer mode. If you try to set these modes, the TAD beeps eight times and enters the Stop mode. If you remove the incoming tape while the TAD is in the Answer or Announce Only mode, the TAD changes to the Stop mode. If the outgoing message tape is not positioned to the beginning in five minutes (for example, because the tape is broken or not inserted) ten beeps sound, all the indicators light, and the TAD enters the Stop mode. To reset the TAD, turn the MASTER POWER switch to off and then on again. Insert or replace the outgoing tape. Setting the TAD to Announce Only Use the Announce Only mode when you want to give information but not accept a caller's message. Be sure your message states clearly that the caller cannot leave a message. To use this mode, press ANNOUNCE ONLY when the STOP indicator is on. The ANNOUNCE ONLY indicator lights, and you hear two beeps. The TAD is ready to answer a call and give your announcement message. Note: If the ANNOUNCE ONLY indicator starts flashing rapidly when you press the ANNOUNCE ONLY button, the TAD is positioning the outgoing message tape at the beginning. You can hear the outgoing message during this operation. When the tape is at the beginning, you hear two beeps, and the indicator changes to a steady illumination. Caution: You must insert the incoming message tape even when you are using the Announce Only mode. If it is not installed, you cannot place the TAD in the Answer or Announce Only mode. Remote turn-on also cannot be done if incoming message tape is not inserted. Note: You cannot directly change the TAD from Answer to Announce Only or from Announce Only to Answer. You must press STOP before changing modes. Remote Turn-On Function If you have forgotten to activate the TAD, you can do so from the remote location. 1. Call your telephone number, and let it ring for one and a quarter minutes. The TAD answers your call if the MASTER POWER switch is on. 2. While your outgoing message is playing, hang up the phone. Your TAD is now in the Answer mode, and will answer calls and record messages. Leaving a Memo Instead of hanging up the telephone in Step 2 of "Remote Turn-on Function", you can wait for the outgoing message to finish and then leave a message on the incoming message tape by speaking into the phone. Hang up the phone after leaving the memo. The TAD returns to the Answer mode. Notes: When you turn on the TAD with the Remote Turn-On Function, it automatically "awakens" in the Answer mode. If you want the TAD to be in the Announce Only mode or if the wrong outgoing message is installed, use the remote functions described in "Remote Control Operation" to change the mode or the outgoing message. The TAD does not count this memo as a new incoming message. The TAD indicates new messages only if additional messages are recorded after the memo. The memo message cannot be played back in ANSWER mode. To play- back the memo, press STOP, then press REWIND to rewind the tape, then press PLAY/START. Remote Turn-Off The remote turn-off command lets you place the TAD in the Stop mode from a remote location. You can always reactivate the TAD using Remote Turn- on. You must use a touch-tone telephone or pocket tone dialer to use this function. 1. Call the TAD, and let it answer. 2. While the outgoing message is playing, press *. The TAD beeps, and the outgoing message stops. 3. Enter the first digit of your security code within five seconds after the end of Step 2. A short tone sounds. 4. Enter the second digit of your security code within five seconds after the end of Step 3. The TAD sounds a long beep. If there are no new messages, three short beeps sound after this long beep. 5. Press #, then 7, and then hang up the telephone. The TAD will not answer any other calls unless you either reset it manually or turn it on remotely. PLAYING BACK INCOMING MESSAGES If the ANSWER indicator is flashing slowly when you return home, you have received at least one new message since the last time you reviewed your calls. When there are no new messages, the ANSWER indicator is lit steadily. 1. While the ANSWER indicator is flashing slowly, press PLAY/START. Adjust the VOLUME control as necessary. The TAD automatically rewinds the incoming message tape to the beginning of the new messages and plays back all new messages. The PLAY/START indicator blinks during rewinding and stays lit during playback. A beep sounds at the end of each message. 2. When the last message has been played, the tape stops, and you hear three beeps. The TAD goes into the Stop mode. Remember, there could be several callers who might not say anything, no matter how good your message is. Some calls might be to the wrong number, or they might be sales people or people who are not comfortable talking to a tape recorder. Such calls are natural occasionally and should come as no surprise. If the caller hangs up without leaving a message or using the maximum time and your telephone substation does not send out CPC signals, the TAD will record dial tones, beeping, or an operator's voice instead of a caller's message until the VOX circuit stops recording. See "VOX and Calling Party Control (CPC)". Notes: The TAD automatically rewinds and plays back messages only the first time you press PLAY. To listen to the messages a second time, position the tape using the REWIND and FAST-F buttons, then press PLAY. To automatically rewind and play back incoming messages, the TAD must be in the Answer mode. (The ANSWER indicator is flashing slowly.) If you want to play back messages when the TAD is in a mode other than Answer, rewind the incoming tape by pressing REWIND, and then press PLAY/START. IF there are no new messages when you press PLAY/START, you hear three beeps to indicate "no new messages." If the ANSWER indicator is flashing rapidly when you return home, the TAD is receiving a call. See "Screening Calls While at Home." If the STOP indicator is flashing rapidly and the ANSWER indicator is flashing slowly, the incoming tape is full. New Message Playback Once you have played back a series of incoming messages and set the TAD to the Answer mode at the end of the last message, the TAD recognizes these messages as old messages. If new messages are recorded and you press PLAY/START while the TAD is in the Answer mode, the TAD plays back only the new messages. For example, if you listen to six messages and then reset the TAD to the Answer mode, the next message is the seventh. The TAD remembers that the seventh message is the first new message, and if you press PLAY/START in the Answer mode, the TAD automatically rewinds to the seventh message and plays all the new messages. On some occasions, such as when you remove the incoming cassette and re-install or press PLAY/START or FAST-F at the end of the new messages, the TAD cannot differentiate new messages from old messages. Rewind When you want to rewind the incoming tape, press STOP, and then press REWIND/BACK SPACE. Pressing REWIND/BACK SPACE rewinds the incoming tape to the beginning of the tape. To stop rewinding before the tape reaches the beginning, press STOP. Back Space When a message is difficult to understand or if you want to hear a section of the message again (a telephone number, for example), press REWIND/BACK SPACE during playback. The TAD rewinds a few seconds of the tape and returns to the playback mode automatically. If you need to back up further press REWIND/BACK SPACE again. Fast-Forward To skip over several messages, press FAST-F during playback, or press STOP then press FAST-F. The playback mode (if engaged) is cancelled, and the TAD fast-forwards to the end of the last message and stops. To stop fast-forwarding before the last message, press STOP. To advance the tape further, press FAST-F again. After Hearing All the Messages: a. To retain all old messages, simply press ANSWER. Even if the tape is not positioned at the end of the last message, press ANSWER. The TAD positions the tape at the end of all old messages and enters the ANSWER mode. b. To record over all old messages, press REWIND/BACK SPACE. The TAD positions the tape at the beginning. Then press ANSWER. c. To set the ANNOUNCE ONLY mode, press ANNOUNCE ONLY. Note: On some occasions the TAD cannot differentiate new messages from old messages. The TAD positions the incoming message tape to the beginning of the tape when you press ANSWER. If you want to retain the messages, use another cassette tape. ERASING THE INCOMING MESSAGE TAPE Erasing is really not necessary since previous recordings are erased automatically when new ones are recorded over them. However, if other people have access to your TAD, you might not want them to have access to your private business. 1. Press REWIND/ERASE. The REWIND/ERASE indicator starts blinking. 2. Press REWIND/BACK SPACE. The REWIND/ERASE indicator changes to a steady illumination, and the PLAY/START indicator blinks during erasing. The incoming messages are erased as the tape rewinds to the beginning. Erasing continues automatically until the incoming tape reaches the beginning or you press STOP. 3. When the incoming message tape reaches the beginning, the TAD stops erasing. Both the PLAY/START and REWIND/ERASE indicator go off. Notes: If the beginning tape is already positioned at the beginning, the TAD beeps eight times when you press REWIND/ERASE. If you do not REWIND/BACK SPACE within five seconds after you press REWIND/ERASE pressed, the REWIND/ERASE indicator goes out, and the TAD enters the Stop mode. This prevents accidental erasure of incoming messages. If you want to stop erasing before the tape reaches the beginning, press STOP. REWIND/ERASE, REWIND/BACK SPACE and ANSWER in this order puts the TAD into the ANSWER mode erasing tape. SCREENING CALLS WHILE AT HOME If you are at home and want to answer the telephone yourself, set the TAD to the Stop mode by pressing STOP. However, if you want to monitor your calls using the TAD... 1. Press ANSWER. 2. When the phone rings and the TAD answers, adjust the VOLUME and listen to your caller leave a message. 3. If you want to speak with the person directly, set the VOLUME to 0, pick up the handset, press STOP, and talk with your caller as you would normally. Caution: Always pick up the handset before pressing STOP. Otherwise, you will disconnect the telephone line. If you do not want to speak with the person directly, do not pick up the phone. The TAD continues as if you were not at home, and the caller can leave a message. Notes: If you want to talk to the caller immediately (before the caller begins to leave a message), lift the handset and press STOP. If you do not press STOP, the caller hears the outgoing message and your voice at the same time. You cannot hear the outgoing message when monitoring. Be prepared to wait for the caller to speak. The ANSWER indicator flashes rapidly while the outgoing message is playing. If you do not press STOP after picking up the handset, your conversation is recorded up to the maximum incoming message time. If the TAD is connected to a phone with one or more extensions, you do not have to go to the phone where the TAD is connected to answer a call. Pick up any extension phone, and once the caller begins to leave a message, carry on a normal conversation. Since you will not be able to press STOP, the TAD records your conversation up to the maximum time set by the INCOMING MESSAGE switch. VOX and Calling Party Control (CPC) VOX VOX refers to a circuit in the TAD that continually monitors the caller's voice. When it does not "hear" anything for about seven seconds or if it hears a steady tone (such as a dial tone), the TAD stops recording, releases the phone line (hangs up), and resets to accept the next call. This circuit helps conserve tape when a caller hangs up before using the maximum incoming message time (30 seconds or 3 minutes). However, when a phone is left "off-hook," a telephone company recording usually comes on with a loud tone or a message that might say, "Hang up your telephone. Hang your telephone!" The recording might come on immediately or after several seconds of no activity on the line. This variation can cause a problem for the VOX circuit. If a caller hangs up as soon as the TAD answers, the TAD stays on the line like a telephone that is off-hook until the outgoing message has ended and then for an additional seven seconds until the VOX circuit stops the TAD's recorder. If the telephone company recording begins before the VOX circuit stops the TAD, the TAD records the telephone company's "Hang up" message, because the VOX circuit cannot tell the difference between the recorded message and a caller's voice. The operation of the "Hang up" message from your telephone company might vary greatly from one call to the next. Calling Party Control Fortunately, many telephone substations send out a special signal when a caller hangs up the telephone. If the TAD detects this signal when your caller hangs up, it stops recording immediately. This feature is called CPC (Calling Party Control). The CPC signal is really a brief interruption in the current flowing through the phone line. This signal can occur in two forms: long or short. Your TAD can be set to respond to either type. Begin operation with the CPC MIN/MAX/OUT switch set to MAX. If you note that your TAD often records the telephone company message, move the switch to MIN. If you still have problems, your telephone company is not sending out a CPC signal. Set the INCOMING MESSAGE switch to 30 seconds and the CPC switch to MAX. When the CPC switch is in the OUT position, the CPC feature is disabled. It is sometimes necessary to disable the CPC if you have the call-waiting feature included in your telephone service, because the TAD mistakes the call-waiting signal for a CPC signal. If a second call is received while the first caller is leaving a message on the TAD, the TAD might stop recording in the middle of the first caller's message. REMOTE CONTROL OPERATION You can control your TAD-325 remotely from any touch-tone phone. You can also use a rotary-dial phone to access your TAD, but you must use a pocket tone dialer (available at Radio Shack). The security code that is described in "Preparation for Use" prevents an unauthorized person from controlling your TAD, because you cannot begin remote operations without entering the code. If the code is correct, the TAD accepts your remote commands; if the code is not correct, the TAD continues its normal answer functions but will not respond to remote commands. If you have not set your security code, refer to "Preparation for Use." Note: The TAD's remote control might not work if you use a telephone that sounds a short tone even though the button is pressed for a long time or if you use a dialer that does not output a steady tone signal. Try calling from another phone or using another dialer. Notes for Using the Pocket Tone Dialer The tones from a tone dialer must pass through the microphone of the telephone to get to the TAD. Many of these microphones are old and do not reproduce the tones accurately, causing erratic operation. The tips below should help you overcome this problem. 1. Hold the handset in a vertical position. 2. Be sure the dialer speaker is centered over the mouthpiece. 3. If you continue to have problems, gently tap the handset on a hard surface. This loosens the carbon particles in the microphone of an older phone and might make it work better. Accessing the TAD-325 by Remote Control All remote control operations begin with these four basic steps: 1. Call your phone number. The TAD answers, and the outgoing message begins. 2. While the message is playing, press the * key. A tone sounds, and the outgoing message stops. 3. Enter the first digit of your security code within five seconds after completing Step 2. A short beep sounds. 4. Enter the second digit of your security code within five seconds after completing Step 3. The TAD sounds a long beep. If there are no new messages, the TAD sounds three short beeps. After the beeps(s), the TAD enters the Remote Stop/Standby mode and is in the Command state, ready to accept remote commands. These commands are described in details in this section. Notes: If you enter an incorrect security code, the tone will not sound, and the TAD continues announcing the outgoing message, and then hangs up the phone. Press * again during the outgoing message, and enter the correct code to continue the remote operation. If the outgoing message restarts even when you enter the correct code, try pressing * and entering the security code again until the TAD accepts the code and sounds a tone. Remote Commands Each time you enter one of the following commands by pressing a number key, the TAD sounds a short beep to indicate that it has accepted the command. Always proceed to the next step after hearing this beep. If you wait longer than 30 seconds to enter a command while the TAD is in the Remote Stop/Standby mode, the TAD resets the outgoing message and then hangs up the phone to answer the next call. If you press 0 while the tape is cycling (before the TAD hangs up), the TAD returns to the Stop/Standby mode and is ready to accept the next command. Rewind/Back Space - key 1 Rewind To rewind the incoming tape, press 0 to exit the current function (if the TAD is not in the Command state), then press 1. The TAD rewinds the tape to the beginning. To stop rewinding, press 0. Back Space To replay the previous few seconds of the incoming tape during playback, press 1. The TAD rewinds the tape for a second and then returns to playback automatically. Playback Calls - key 2 1. While the TAD is in the command state, press 2, PLAY/START, to playback the new incoming messages. The TAD rewinds the incoming message tape to the beginning of the new messages and plays all new messages. The TAD automatically stops and sounds three short beeps at the end of the last message. If no new messages have been recorded and 2 is pressed, 3 beeps sound. During remote operation, the TAD always stops playback at the end of the last message and sounds three beeps. If you press 2 (PLAY/START) or 3 (FAST-F) after the TAD stops at this point, the TAD sounds eight beeps and does not move the tape. 2. Press 7 after listening to all new messages, and hang up the phone. The TAD returns to the Answer mode, and all messages are retained. If you want to continue other remote functions, press any other command key within 30 seconds after the TAD stops playback. Notes: The TAD automatically rewinds and plays new messages the first time you select this function during a remote session. If you want to listen to the message again, position the tape using the FAST-F, REWIND/BACK SPACE, and STOP commands before selecting PLAYBACK. If the incoming tape comes to the end during remote playback, the TAD automatically stops and is ready to accept the next command. If you press 2 (PLAY/START), 3 (FAST-F), or 7 (ANSWER) at this point, the TAD sounds eight beeps as a warning. Rewind the incoming tape, or set the TAD to the Announce Only mode. When setting the TAD to the Announce Only mode, change the outgoing message so that callers know they cannot leave a message. If you hang up while an incoming message is playing, the TAD continues to play to the end of the last message and then returns to the Answer mode. The telephone line is held "off-hook" during this process, and callers receive a busy signal. Fast-Forward - key 3 To fast-forward the incoming tape, press 3 during playback, or press 0 to exit the current function then press 3. The TAD fast-forwards the tape to the end of the last message. To stop fast-forwarding, press 0. Setting the TAD to Announce Only - key 4 1. Press 0 to stop the current remote function. Be sure that the outgoing message is appropriate for the Announce Only mode when setting the TAD in this mode. To check the outgoing message, press 6. If you need to change the message, press 5, and then press 2. 2. Press 4. The TAD hangs up the phone after two beeps and cycles the outgoing message tape to the beginning. It is now ready to answer the next call. You should only press 4 at the end of the remote operations. New Announcement Recording - key 5 The TAD-325 lets you change the outgoing message from a remote location. 1. Press 0 to stop the current remote function. 2. Press 5. The current outgoing message is played back. At the end of the message, a beep sounds. Do not start recording yet. Wait for a long tone to sound to indicate the tape is positioned and ready for your new message. 3. When the long tone stops, press 2. A short tone sounds. 4. Speak your new message into the phone. 5. When you complete your message, press 0. A long tone sounds. 6. After the long tone, the outgoing tape is positioned to the beginning while an intermittent tone sounds. A long tone sounds when the positioning is completed. To check the newly recorded message, press 6. Note: You can hang up the phone after completing your message. The TAD enters the Answer mode with the newly recorded outgoing message. Listening to the Outgoing Announcement - key 6 To check the outgoing message, press 0, and then press 6 (LISTEN). The TAD sounds a short beep and then plays back the outgoing message with a long tone at the end. Setting the TAD to Answer Calls - key 7 To reset the TAD to the Answer mode before hanging up the phone after any remote operation... 1. Press 0 to stop the previous remote function. If you want to record over old messages, press key 1 (REWIND) to rewind the tape to the beginning. 2. Press 7, ANSWER. The TAD beeps and hangs up the phone after cycling the incoming message tape to the end of the last message and the outgoing message tape to the beginning. It is now ready to answer the next call. Notes: Before resetting the TAD to the Answer mode, be careful that the previously recorded messages are not accidentally erased by the new incoming message. To prevent this, press key 3 (FAST-F) to advance the tape to the end of the last message. If you hang up the phone during remote playback or rewinding, the TAD fast-forwards or continues to play back the incoming message tape to the end of the last message. It is then ready to answer the next call. During this period, any caller gets a busy signal. If you forget to press 7 before hanging up, the TAD automatically returns to the Answer mode after 30 seconds, but does not reset the Toll Saver function. If the TAD detects a CPC signal when you hang up, it immediately returns to the Answer mode. It is a good idea to press 7 at the end of each remote session so that the TAD does not have to wait for the 30 seconds of no command and the Toll Saver function resets. Room Monitor - key 9 You can use this function to listen to what is going on in the room where the TAD is located. Press 0, and then press 9. The TAD sounds a tone, and you can hear the sounds in the room in which the TAD is located for up to 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, a tone sounds and the TAD enters the Stop/Standby mode. Press 9 again if you want to continue monitoring. To stop monitoring, press 0. Stop/Standby - key 0 To stop or cancel any current function, press 0. The TAD is not deactivated by pressing 0 but is placed in the Command state, ready to accept the next command. The TAD enters the Command state when you press 0 or when it completes any remote function. Disabling the TAD - keys # and 7 To disable the TAD by remote control (remote turn-off function): 1. Press 0 to set the TAD to the Stop/Standby mode. 2. Press #, and then press 7. The TAD hangs up the Phone immediately and does not answer any further calls. This command is also known as remote turn-off, and is described earlier in the manual. (LB/all-03/13/95)
