TAD-325 (430-0396) Troubleshooting Faxback Doc. # 14145 If... A dial tone, beep or siren, This is normal if a caller hangs up or an operator's recorded voice without leaving a message (or using is recorded instead of a caller's the maximum message time) and your message- telephone sub-station does not send out CPC signals. The TAD does not answer the phone- Your connection to the phone line is improper, or you have not pressed the ANSWER or ANNOUNCE ONLY button. Recheck your plug connections and control settings. Be sure that the MASTER POWER switch is on. If the incoming message tape breaks while recording a caller's message the TAD will not record any further messages. When the next call comes in, the TAD answers and sounds eight beeps and then hangs up the phone after seven seconds. If the incoming message tape breaks during remote rewind, the TAD remains in the rewind mode for about five minutes, and then hangs up the phone. The TAD will not answer the phone until the problem is corrected. The outgoing message does not play- You might not have installed the outgoing cassette properly (label must be up). This problem can only occur when using other manufacturer's cassettes. The outgoing message is distorted- Make a new message and try speaking a little more softly or backing away from the microphone. If you are too close or speak too loudly, your message is distorted. The outgoing or incoming message Clean each recording head. Take out is distorted- both cassette tapes, and rub the front surface of the heads with a cotton swab moistened with tape head cleaner (Cat. No. 44-1010). Also, periodically demagnetize the tape heads with a cassette head demagnetizer (Cat. Nos. 44-1165 /207/225 or 631). Reinstall the cassettes. If the problem continues, the cassettes might be worn out. Replace them with new ones. Replace the incoming and outgoing message tapes at least once a year (more often if used heavily). No controls work and all If the outgoing message tape is not indicators are lit- inserted or breaks during operation, the TAD hangs up the phone in five minutes, disables all controls, lights all indicators, and does not answer further calls. Correct the problem, and then turn the MASTER POWER switch off then on again to reset the TAD. Your outgoing message becomes The tape might be worn. Try to make garbled or weak- a new message; if the new message still sounds bad, clean and demagnetize the head. If this does not work, replace the outgoing message tape. The remote control does not The tone output from the telephone or function- tone dialer is probably not long enough to be effective. Try using another phone or tone dialer. This problem also occurs if you enter your two-digit code too rapidly. Try entering the code slowly, confirming a tone after entering each digit. If you set the remote code with the MASTER POWER switch ON, the code setting is effective. Try setting the code with the MASTER POWER switch set to OFF. The TAD does not operate- The internal microprocessor can sometimes become "confused" by conflicting instructions. To reset the entire microprocessor circuitry, disconnect the AC power cord, and then reconnect it. This procedure resets the TAD and returns the TAD to the Stop mode. Eight beeps sound- Check the incoming message tape. The following conditions can cause the beeps: Tape is not inserted when you press ANNOUNCE ONLY or ANSWER. Tape is at the end (or the end of the last message) when you press PLAY/ START or FAST-F. Tape is already at the beginning when you press REWIND/ERASE. LIGHTNING The Radio Shack phone product has built-in protection circuits that meet or exceed F.C.C. damage from surges in telephone and AC power line current. However, if lightning strikes near, or directly to, these lines, the resulting surge of voltage can damage the phone device. Lightning damage is uncommon, but it can occur to phones and other electronic devices. If you are concerned about it or live in an area with frequent and/or severe electrical storms, we suggest that you unplug your electronic products during a storm. (LB/all-03/13/95)
