This gives you a total capacity of 32 phone numbers in memory. You will need to make indications on the label to help you remember what number is stored in each position. Be sure it is set fully UP or DOWN. 0 through 9 Buttons - use to dial phone numbers or enter numbers into the memory. LDT Indicator - lights when the phone has been temporarily switched to the tone mode by pressing the LDT button while in the pulse mode. PRIVACY Button - temporarily turns off the handset and speakerphone microphone so the person on the other end of the line can't hear you. MONITOR Button - press for on-hook dialing; when the called party answers, lift the handset or press the AMPLIFIER button. This button is also used to activate the auto-redial feature. Battery Compartment - holds 4 AA-Cell batteries that provide power to protect the numbers stored in memory. Key-hole Slots - use when mounting the DUoFONE-165 on the wall. [*] and [#] Function Button - used only in the tone mode for special service functions, such as call forwarding, computer access, etc. FLASH Button - press to create the 1/2 second "on-hook" signal necessary for special services such as call waiting. This replaces the "hook- switch" signal used on regular telephones, and is more dependable. MEMORY STORE Button - press to prepare the DUoFONE-165 to store auto-dial numbers. MEMORY STORE/BATTery - lights when the MEMORY STORE button is TEST indicator pressed in, as an indicator that the phone is ready to store a number. It also shows the battery condition when the BATTery TEST button, located at the rear of the unit, is pressed with the handset off-hook. DIALING Indicator - lights up when the handset is lifted. It will flicker when the numbers are dialed out in pulse mode. Also flickers during the wall time of AUTO redial. Handset - use as a normal handset. AUTO DIAL Button - use for auto-dialing and entering phone numbers into memory. PULSE/TONE Switch - use to set the dialing mode to match your phone system. If you have a standard tone system, set the switch to TONE. If you are on a rotary phone line, set the switch to PULSE. RINGER OFF/A/B Switch - use to adjust the ring tone or to turn off the ringer. AC ADAPTER/TEL LINE Switch - for most dependable operation, set to AC ADAPTER and connect the supplied AC adapter. If it is impossible to use the AC adapter, set to TEL LINE: this will disable the monitor function. BATTery TEST Button - use to check the condition of the batteries. If the MEMORY STORE/BATT TEST indicator does not light when this button is pressed with the handset off-hook, the batteries are weak. DC 6V Jack - connect the AC adapter here. Your DUoFONE-165 is designed to operate on power from the supplied AC adapter. You'll also need to install 4 AA batteries (not supplied) to protect the numbers in memory, in case of an AC power failure. Important Note: To ensure proper operation, when first installing the telephone, be sure to put in the batteries before connecting the phone to the phone line. If this procedure is reversed, the microprocessor will not work correctly. If this happens, remove the batteries and disconnect the telephone line cord. Then wait thirty seconds and follow correct procedure. CAUTION: In order to protect the numbers stored in memory, have a set of fresh batteries ready to install before you remove the old batteries. The circuit will hold the memory for a short period of time without power, but if you have the batteries out too long you might have to re-enter all the stored numbers. Also, keep the phone connected to the wall plug with the handset "off hook" during battery replacement. INSTALLING/REPLACING BATTERIES 1. Open the battery compartment by pressing the tab in the direction of the arrow. 2. Insert 4 AA batteries, as indicated by the drawing in the compartment (+ and -) WARNING: Incorrect battery installation (+ and -) might damage the unit. 3. Replace the battery compartment cover. Selecting a Location Don't forget to position the wires so they will not be in the way of normal activities. Hook-Up Before connecting your DUoFONE-165, you must notify the telephone company of the registration and ringer equivalence numbers. You'll find them both on the label on the bottom of the unit. The DUoFONE-165 uses modular type connector plugs and jacks (the same ones required for all new telephone equipment). It may be used with either rotary or tone systems. If you have the older 4-prong receptacles or your phones are wired directly to the wall, Radio Shack sells the jack and adapters necessary to make the conversion. Or, you may ask the telephone company to update your wiring to the modular system. To install the DUoFONE-165, simply plug one end of the supplied modular cord into the wall jack and the other end into the jack on the bottom of the phone. Note: The telephone company is authorized to charge you for the installation of such jacks. They might ask you for the U.S.O.C number for the plug connection. This number is RJ-11C (or RJ-11W, if you plan to mount your phone on the wall). WARNING: The DUoFONE-165 must not be connected to coin-operated or party- line systems. Connecting the AC Adapter Plug the adapter into the DC 6V jack on the DUoFONE-165 and into a standard AC outlet. Be sure the AC ADAPTER/TEL LINE switch is set to AC ADAPTER. If for any reason you cannot use the AC adapter, set the AC ADAPTER/TEL LINE switch to TEL LINE. The monitor features (on-hook dialing and auto redial) will not be available if the adapter is not used. Also, it is possible that the memory store and last-number redial features will not work properly if the AC adapter is not used. Setting the RINGER Switch Select the position A (higher tone) or B (lower tone) of the ringer. If you do not want the phone to ring, set it to OFF position. You can still answer or place calls when his switch is off. Setting the PULSE/TONE (Dialing Mode) Switch To determine the proper setting for the PULSE/TONE switch, you must find out if your phone service is a rotary- or tone- type. To do this, connect the phone, set the switch to TONE, lift the handset (to get a dial tone), and press any of the number buttons on the unit. If the dial tone continues, you have a rotary service; set the switch to PULSE. If it stops you have a tone service; set the switch to TONE. The tone mode is necessary to communicate with special service equipment, such as bank-by-phone or alternate long distance. You may do this, even if you are on a rotary line, by dialing the local number of the special service in the pulse mode and then switching to the tone mode by pressing the LDT button, when you need to "talk" with the computer. This will be explained more fully in the "OPERATION" section of this manual. Wall Installation The DUoFONE-165 may be mounted on a wall, if desired. Use two screws; the heads must fit into the key-hole slots on the back of the unit. Drill suitable holes for inserting the screws. The two holes must be 3 15/16" (100 mm) apart. The screws should extend 3/16" (5mm) from the wall. You must remove the two taller rubber feet for wall mounting. Then route the phone wire through the groove on the bottom of the unit and hang it on the screws. To prevent the handset from falling off the wall mounted telephone, you must pull out on the handset hook, turn it around, and release it. There is also a handset holder above the regular handset hook that allows you to temporarily hang the handset without disconnecting the call. The DUoFONE-165 may also be mounted on standard modular wall jack (279- 387). In this case we recommend that you use a short modular cord (279- 390, not included) between the phone and the jack.
