Duofone 165 (430-0601) Operation Faxback Doc. # 14277 In these instructions, "on-hook" means the handset is hung up. "off-hook" means the handset has been lifted off the base. QUICK REFERENCE TO SPECIAL BUTTONS Using REDIAL You may redial the last dialed number (manually or auto-redialing) by pressing REDIAL. This temporary memory will hold up to 46 digits. If you get a busy signal, simply hang up and wait a few minutes; then lift the handset and press REDIAL. The redial memory number is replaced each time you dial a new number. Using PAUSE Some telephone systems, such as those in offices, require you to dial a code number and then wait for the outside line to connect. When storing a number in memory (or for possible redial use), you may program this pause by pressing PAUSE in the desired position. Then, when auto-dialing, the DUoFONE-165 will stop at the PAUSE entry. Dialing will automatically continue after three seconds. For example, to store 9 (access code) 123-4567 you would press: [9] [PAUSE] [1234567] Note: PAUSE is counted as a digit in memory dialing. Using LDT Use the LDT button to communicate with tone access services, such as alternate long distance, when you are on a rotary line (pulse mode). When you press LDT, the telephone temporarily switches from the pulse mode to the tone mode. For example, you may call the local number for the special service in the pulse mode. Then, when the computer answers, press LDT and enter the numbers necessary to communicate with the computer. Using Flash Some special phone services require a hook-switch signal (pressing the hook switch for about 1/2 second). The FLASH button will do this for you. For example, call waiting is a special telephone service available in some areas. The user may place a call on hold and take a second incoming call by pressing the FLASH button. Repeating the FLASH button signal allows the user to alternate between calls. Using MONITOR Press this button to activate the MONITOR feature. Then dial the number. When the called party answers, lift the handset and talk. Also, use MONITOR to access the auto-redial feature. If you get a busy signal or no answer, simply hang up and wait a few minutes; press MONITOR and then REDIAL. The DUoFONE-165 will redial once a minute, up to 10 times, until the call is answered. When you hear the party answer lift the handset and continue as usual. For complete hands-free operation, use the AMPLIFIER button. Using AMPLIFIER (Speakerphone) The built-in speakerphone allows two-way hands-free conversations. For all operations of the telephone, pressing AMPLIFIER in is the same as lifting the handset; pressing it again (to release it) is the same as hanging up the handset. Using PRIVACY When talking on a ordinary phone, you might cover the mouthpiece with your hand when you don't want your caller to hear you. With the DUoFONE-165, pressing PRIVACY does the same thing. This disconnects the microphone in the handset or speakerphone, depending on which mode you are using. You can still hear the other person but they cannot hear you. To return to normal operation, press PRIVACY again to release it. Using SENSITIVITY When using the speakerphone in an area with high noise levels, the DUoFONE 165 might be held in the transmit mode; you won't be able to hear the caller. Should this happen, press SENSITIVITY in (to the MIN position). Dialing a Number Manually Lift the handset and use the buttons to enter the desired number. If you used the monitor feature to dial "on-hook", lift the handset when the called party answers. Note: In the pulse mode, there will be a short pause after you have entered the numbers, while the DUoFONE-165 finishes the pulse dialing. After reaching the desired number (in the pulse mode), if you need to communicate with tone access equipment (alternate long-distance, bank-by phone, etc.) press the LDT button to temporarily switch to the tone mode; then press the required buttons. You may press the LDT button again to return to the pulse mode during a call; the DUoFONE-165 will automatically return to the pulse mode when you hang up. Note: Don't be alarmed when you get the same tone every time you press a button in the pulse mode. This is normal; this tone is only for entry verification. In the tone mode you will hear the same DTMF (Dual-Tone, Multi-Frequency) tones as you hear with a regular tone- dialing phone. Input Error Alarm When dialing manually, you'll hear a short tone after pressing each button. If you hear a three-tone signal (or no tone at all), it means you have dialed incorrectly - pressing [*] or [#] in pulse mode or entering numbers too rapidly, for example. If this happens, hang up and start over. Storing a Number in the Auto-Dial Memory Up to 32 phone numbers (28 digits each) may be stored in the auto-dial memory. Using the PAUSE or LDT button counts as a digit when storing a number: 1. With the handset on-hook, set the memory up/down bar to the desired position (up or down). 2. Press the MEMORY Store button to the in position; you'll hear a short tone and the MEMORY STORE indicator will light. 3. Enter the desired number, using the keyboard. 4. Press the AUTO DIAL button at the position where you wish to store the number. If you make a mistake while storing the number, press MEMORY STORE again to release it and return to step 2. Here's an example of entering a 7-digit number (123-4567). 1. Press MEMORY STORE; this prepares the DUoFONE-165 to store a number in the memory. 2. Press 1 2 3 4 5 6 7; this enters the phone number. You will hear a tone as each number is entered. 3. Choose one of the 16 AUTO DIAL buttons and press it. A tone is heard as the number is stored. To continue storing numbers in the memory (up to 32), follow steps 2 and 3 until all AUTO DIAL buttons are used. Then press MEMORY STORE again to release it. Don't forget to make a note of the number stored in each position. Note: While the MEMORY STORE indicator is on, you cannot dial out. Incoming calls will ring however. To answer a call, press MEMORY STORE again to release it and lift the handset. Any number that has not been entered in memory by pressing the desired AUTO DIAL button, will be lost when the MEMORY STORE button is released; stored numbers will not be affected. Auto-dialing a Number 1. Lift the handset. 2. Press the AUTO DIAL button for the number you want to dial; make sure the memory up/down bar is in the desired position. 3. If you use the monitor feature for on-hook dialing, lift the handset when the called party answers. Note: It will take a few seconds for the number to dial, when you are in the pulse mode. A flashing DIALING indicator lets you know the number is dialing. To Stop Auto-dialing Auto-dialing may be stopped at any point, by hanging up the handset. This will not change the number stored in the memory. If you use the MONITOR or AMPLIFIER button for on-hook dialing, press MONITOR or AMPLIFIER again to stop auto-dialing. Adding Pause to a Number If you're using your DUoFONE-165 in an office (or anywhere that requires an access code for outside calls), you might need to add a pause. This pause is necessary to allow time for the office phone system to connect with the outside line. The PAUSE button may be used in two ways. 1. Manual Dialing - when you use the PAUSE button during manual dialing, you do not have to wait for the outside dial tone before dialing the outside number. The pause is added and dialing continues automatically. The pause will also be in affect if you press redial or auto-redial. 2. Auto-Dialing - a pause may be used in a number stored in memory (in either dialing mode). Note: When the DUoFONE-165 reaches a PAUSE entry, it will pause 3 seconds and then continue dialing automatically. If you need a longer pause, use additional PAUSE entries. (Example: Press two times for 6 seconds, 3 times for 9 seconds.) If you want auto-dialing to continue before the automatic pause is over, press the AUTO DIAL button again. Example: 1. Press MEMORY STORE; this prepares the unit to store a number. 2. Press [9] (example only); this enters the outside access code. 3. Press Pause; this adds a pause (to allow time for the outside line to connect). Then enter the telephone number and press the desired AUTO DIAL button, as when entering any other auto-dial number. Special Service Memory Entries (Pulse mode only) If you're in the pulse mode and want to store a number that uses services such as bank-by-phone or alternate long-distance, you'll need to use the LDT (mode change) button. If you are using the tone dialing mode all the time, you won't need this button. Here's an example of typical alternate long-distance entry: 1. Press MEMORY; this prepares the unit to store a number. 2. Press [9], to enter the access code, if necessary. 3. Press PAUSE; this adds a pause to allow time for the outside line to connect, if you entered an access code in step 2. 4. Press XXX-XXXX; enter the local number of the special service. 5. Press LDT; this temporarily switches the DUoFONE-165 to tone dialing so you may "talk" with the computer. Note: You will need to add a pause after the LDT entry to allow the service time to answer. 6. Enter your code number from the special service. 7. Enter the area code and the telephone number you wish to store. 8. Press one of the AUTO DIAL buttons; this stores the entire number (including pause(s) and mode change) into the auto-dial memory. The PAUSE or LDT button counts as a digit in the 28-digit memory capacity. Chain Dialing Even if you put a pause after the LDT entry, it is impossible to know how quickly the computer service will answer. Therefore, it is best to store the initial number for the special service in separate memory position. Then, after the initial call is answered, press the AUTO DIAL button for the actual telephone number you want to call. Of course, this second number must be entered in the tone mode (or it must begin with an LDT entry). Of course, chain dialing may also be used if you have a tone service for your phone. Using the Labels As you store numbers in the DUoFONE-165 memory, you'll need to record the names associated with stored numbers. We've included a label for this purpose. Move the memory up/down bar to the down position and lift the label cover. List the names in the appropriate spaces. We suggest you use pencil so you can change the label when you change a memory setting. Be sure you write in the correct space (up/down). Auto-Redial If you get a busy signal, you may set the DUoFONE-165 to automatically redial the number up to ten times for you. All you do is press MONITOR and then press REDIAL. The DUoFONE-165 dials the number once every 60 seconds (approx.). After each time the number is dialed the DUoFONE-165 waits about 16 seconds and, if the call is not answered, hangs up. When the call is answered, you will hear the call through the speaker. Lift the handset or press the AMPLIFIER button and talk to the person. While the auto-redial feature is activated, the dialing indicator flickers to remind you that DUoFONE-165 is in auto-redial mode. If an incoming call is received between the automatic redial attempts, it will ring through and the redial feature is cancelled. Note: If an auto redial call is not answered and your handset is lifted within 16 seconds after dialing begins, the call will be cancelled and the auto dial feature will dial the number again in about 1 minute. Be sure to disable the auto dialing if you will be away from your phone, so the called party won't accidentally receive annoying "hang up" calls. Monitor (On-Hook) Dialing Press MONITOR with the handset on hook and then dial the desired number or press the desired AUTO DIAL button. You will hear the ring tone and the called party answer through the speaker. You must however, lift the handset or press the AMPLIFIER button to talk to the person when they answer. If you make an error in dialing press MONITOR and begin again. Note: It is best to use the monitor feature for one-way services, such as time/temperature or stock quotes. For two-way conversations, use the speakerphone. Using the Speakerphone The speakerphone may be used in place of the handset at any time. Pressing AMPLIFIER in, is the same as lifting the handset; pressing AMPLIFIER again, to release it, is the same as hanging up the handset. To Place a Speakerphone Call: 1. Press AMPLIFIER to the in position; the handset must be "on hook". 2. Adjust the VOLUME control so that the dial tone is at the desired level. 3. Dial a number in the normal manner (manual, redial, or auto-dial). Note: You must use the MONITOR button to access the auto-redial feature. To Answer a Call with the Speakerphone: You may answer an incoming call, without lifting the handset, by simply pressing the AMPLIFIER button. You may switch from normal to speakerphone operation (or vice-versa) during a call. When going from normal to speakerphone operation, press the AMPLIFIER button before you hang up the handset. When going from amplifier to normal operation, lift the handset before turning off the amplifier. Important: When using the speakerphone you can only talk one way at a time; both sides of the conversation cannot talk at the same time. Remember: The person that speaks first had priority. Also, if there is a high noise level near you telephone, it may not switch to receive; you won't be able to hear what the other person is saying. If this happens, press the SENSITIVITY button in. Under normal conditions, leave this button out. Always speak in a clear voice and a little slower than with normal telephone use. In a conference situation, let each person speak in turn (one at a time). Also, if the SENSITIVITY button is pressed in, sound pick-up will not be as sensitive. So either keep noise down to a minimum (including side conversation) or everyone must speak a little louder when it is their turn. If you don't want the other person(s) to hear you (if you are talking with someone else at your location while you are on the phone, for example) press the PRIVACY button in. This turns off the microphone without ending the call; press PRIVACY again to resume normal operation. Also, the PRIVACY button is useful when the receiving signal is too low to allow the DUoFONE-165 to switch to receive. Pressing PRIVACY forces the unit to receive mode, so you can listen to weak receiving signals. Of course, you must release the button when you want to talk to the caller. When you finish your conversation, press the AMPLIFIER button again (to return it to the up position). (TK/all-03/20/95)
