Caller ID System 400 (430-0958) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 15764 INSTALLING/REPLACING THE BATTERIES This system requires four AAA batteries for power. For the longest operation, we recommend you use alkaline batteries (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-555). CAUTION: Have the fresh batteries on hand before you begin battery replacement. You must install the new batteries within 2 minutes after removing the old ones; otherwise, you might lose the information stored in the system. Follow these steps to install or replace the batteries. 1. If the system is already installed, unplug the telephone line from the system and wait until the display dims. 2. Remove the screw securing the battery compartment. 3. Lift off the battery compartment cover. 4. Remove and discard the old batteries (if necessary). CAUTIONS: Do not press any buttons after you remove the old batteries. Doing so can erase all information from the system. Always remove old or weak batteries. They can leak chemicals which can damage electronic circuits. 5. Place fresh batteries in the compartment as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the compartment. 6. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw. NOTES: The system automatically tests the batteries when it receives each new call. When BATT LOW appears on the display or the display dims, replace the batteries. The BATT LOW indicator lights if you connect AC power with no batteries installed. Install batteries so if there is an AC power failure, the information stored in the Caller ID System will not be lost. CONNECTING AN OPTIONAL AC ADAPTER You can power the Caller ID System from standard AC power using AC power adapter (not supplied) such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 273-1455. CAUTION: You must use a Class II AC adapter that supplies 9 volts and delivers at least 50 milliamps. Its center tip must be negative, and its plug must correctly fit the system's DC 9V jack. The recommended adapter meets these specifications. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the system or the adapter. NOTE: Even if you use an optional AC adapter, keep fresh batteries installed to protect the information in the system's memory during power failures. Follow these steps to connect the adapter. 1. If the system is already installed, unplug the telephone line from the system and wait until the display dims. 2. Plug the adapter's barrel plug into the system's DC 9V jack. 3. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. CONNECTING TO THE PHONE LINE The Caller ID System connects to a modular telephone jack and your telephone. If your telephone wiring does not have a modular jack, you can update the wiring yourself. Radio Shack stores sell the jacks and adapters necessary to convert from older wiring methods to modular wiring. Or, you can have the telephone company update your telephone wiring for you. The telephone company charges to install the necessary jack. The USOC number of the jack to be installed is RJ11C. Follow these steps to connect the system to the telephone line. 1. Unplug the telephone line cord from your telephone's phone jack and plug it into the TEL.LINE jack on the Caller ID System. 2. Plug the supplied line cord into the Caller ID System's other jack. 3. Plug the supplied line cord's other end into the telephone's phone jack. ADJUSTING THE DISPLAY CONTRAST You can select from 16 display settings. Select the setting that is easiest to read, depending on the light in the room where you connect the system. 1. Press MODE repeatedly until CALLER ID MODE appears on the display. 2. Press REVIEW [left arrow] until the time and (the number of) CALLS appears. 3. Press and hold READ until CONTRAST: (contrast setting) appears. 4. Press REVIEW [right arrow] or [left arrow] to increase or decrease the contrast. 5. When you finish adjusting the display contrast, press READ again. RESETTING THE SYSTEM Before you use the system the first time, or when the display is locked up, use a pointed object, such as a ball point pen to press RESET on the back of the system.
