TAD-278 Remote Control Answering System
(430-0767) Installation Faxback Doc. # 16830

We have designed your TAD to conform to federal regulations, and you can
connect it to most telephone lines. However, each device (such as a
telephone or answering machine) that you connect to the telephone line
draws power from the line. We refer to this power draw as the device's
Ringer Equivalence Number, or REN. The REN is shown on the bottom of the
TAD's base.

If you are using more than one telephone or other device on the line, add
up all the REN's.

If the total is more than five, the telephones might not ring and the
answering machine might not answer. In rural areas, a total REN of three
might impair ringer operation.

If ringer operation is impaired, remove a device from the telephone line.

FCC STATEMENT

The TAD complies with Part 68 of FCC Rules. You must, upon request,
provide the FCC registration number and REN to your telephone company.

Both numbers are shown on the bottom of the TAD.

NOTE: You must not connect your system to:

       Coin-operated systems

       Party-line systems

       Most electronic key phone systems

You must complete the following steps in this order to properly install
the TAD:

    Select a location

    Connect the handset

    Install a cassette tape

Program a security code when you connect power

    Set the dialing mode

    Set the ringer switch

MOUNTING THE SYSTEM

You can place the TAD on a desktop or table, or mount it on a wall. Select
a location that is near a modular telephone jack and an AC outlet, and away
from normal activities.

NOTE: Your telephone connects directly to a modular telephone line jack.
If your telephone wiring does not have a modular jack, you can
update the wiring yourself or have the telephone company update
       it for you.

Radio Shack stores sell jacks and adapters to convert older wiring methods
to modular wiring.

The telephone company charges to install the necessary jacks.

The USOC number of the jacks to be installed is RJ11C (or RJ11W for a wall
plate jack).

Desktop Connection

To use your TAD on a desk, table, or shelf, plug one end of the supplied
telephone cord into the TEL.LINE jack on the top of the TAD. Then plug
the other end into a modular phone jack.

Mounting on the Wall

Follow these steps to mount the TAD directly on the wall or on a wall
plate.

NOTES: To mount the TAD directly on a wall, use two screws with heads that
fit into the keyhole slots on the back of the base and the supplied
mounting bracket. Drill two holes 3 15/16 inches apart, then
thread the screws into the wall, letting the heads extend about
        1/8-inch from the wall.

To mount the TAD on a wall plate, you need a short modular
telephone cord. Your local Radio Shack store sells a variety of
        telephone cords.

1. Install the wall-mount bracket on the bottom of the TAD.

2. Plug one end of the supplied modular cord (for mounting directly on the
wall) or the short modular cord (for mounting on a wall plate) into the
TEL.LINE jack on the top of the TAD. Then route the cord through the
groove on the bottom of the TAD.

3. Plug the other end of the cord into a modular phone jack.

4. Place the keyhole slots of the base and bracket over the screw heads
or wall plate's studs, and press down on the TAD to secure it.

CONNECTING THE HANDSET

Plug one end of the handset cord into the jack on the TAD's left side.
Plug the other end into the jack on the end of the handset. Then place
the handset on the cradle.

USING THE HANDSET HOLDERS

The handset holder below the switchhook keeps the handset from falling off
when you mount the TAD on a wall.

There is another handset holder on the top of the base. When the TAD is
mounted on a wall, this handset holder allows you to temporarily hang the
handset without disconnecting the call.

INSTALLING THE CASSETTE TAPE

The TAD is supplied with an MC-30 tape (15 minutes recording time per
side). You can buy additional and different length cassettes at your
local Radio Shack store.

Follow these steps to install the tape.

1. Turn the supplied cassette's hub counter-clockwise with a pencil to
    take up any tape slack.

2. Lift the handset.

3. Lift the cassette compartment cover to open it.

4. Install the cassette in the compartment with the cassette's open end
toward the bottom of the TAD and the full reel to the right.

NOTES: Replace the tape at least once a year, or more often if it is
            used heavily.

When fully rewound, the full reel should be on the right. If it
is not, the TAD rewinds the tape when you connect power.

5. Close the cover.

6. Replace the handset.

PROGRAMMING THE SECURITY CODE AND CONNECTING POWER

You must choose and program the remote operation security code at the time
you connect AC power. Select a number in the left column for the code, and
follow the steps shown in the "Action" column next to that code.

NOTE: When you enter the security code, press and hold down the
appropriate button until the TAD rewinds the tape.

Code Action

0 Connect AC power without pressing any button.

1 Press and hold down ANN, then connect AC power

2 Press and hold down PLAY/FF, then connect AC power.

4 Press and hold down MEMO/REW, then connect AC power.

5 Press and hold down STOP/ERS, then connect AC power.

7 Press and hold down ANS, then connect AC power.

NOTES: Once the security code is programmed, buttons 1, 4, 7, and * all
activate the same code. Buttons 2, 5, 8, and 0 all activate the
        same code.

Because the TAD only lets you program 0 with a blank tape, we do
not recommend programming 0 for the security code. You can still
use 0 to activate the security code if you program 2 or 5.

Buttons 3, 6, 9, and # are not used as security codes.

To connect AC power, plug the small end of the supplied AC adapter
into the TAD's DC 9V jack. Then plug the adapter into a standard
        AC outlet.

CAUTION: You must use a Class II, 120 volt AC/9 volt DC adapter that
delivers up to 500 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to
negative and its plug must correctly fit the TAD's DC 9V jack.
The supplied adapter meets these requirements. Using an adapter
that does not meet these requirements could damage the TAD or
          the adapter.

When you first apply power, or when power is restored after a
power loss, the TAD takes a least 1 minute to position the tape.
If you have not recorded an outgoing message, the TAD rewinds the
          tape and sounds 4 beeps.

NOTES: After you program the security code and connect power, the TAD
beeps to confirm the setting is completed.

To change the security code, disconnect AC power, reprogram
the code, and reconnect AC power.

SETTING THE DIALING MODE

Set P/T on the handset for the type of service you have (pulse or tone).
If you are not sure which type of service you have, do this simple test.

1. Lift the handset and listen for a dial tone.

2. Set P/T to T.

3. Press any number other than 0. If you dial tone stops, you have
touch-tone service. If you dial tone continues, you have pulse
service. If you have pulse service, set P/T to P.

NOTES: If P/T is set to P, there is a delay after you enter the
number while the telephone finishes dialing the number.

If you have a pulse line and want to use a tone service,
see "Using Tone Services with a Pulse Line."

SETTING THE RINGER SWITCH

If you want to turn off the telephone's ringer, set RINGER on the right
side of the TAD's base to OFF. You can still make outgoing calls. If
you hear an extension phone ring, you can still use your TAD to answer
calls.
