TAD-278 Remote Control Answering System (430-0767) Operation Faxback Doc. # 16831 RESET Press RESET for about 1 second to disconnect a call without hanging up the handset. This feature is useful if you need to make several calls in a row. FLASH Many special telephone services require a switchhook signal. Pressing FLASH provides the electronic equivalent of this signal. For example, if you have call waiting (a service available from most telephone companies), you can put the first call on hold and take a second incoming call on the same line by pressing FLASH. Press FLASH again to return to the first call. NOTE: If you do not subscribe to a service that uses a switchhook signal, do not press FLASH during a call. You might disconnect the call. REDIAL To quickly dial the last number dialed, press REDIAL. The redial memory stores up to 32 digits (31 in tone mode), so you can redial local and long distance numbers. NOTE: If you redial a number that includes a dialing mode change (changing from P to T), the telephone automatically switches from the pulse mode to the tone mode and continues dialing. The dialing mode change counts as one digit in the redial memory. USING TONE SERVICES WITH A PULSE LINE Some special services, such as alternate long-distance or bank-by-phone, require tone signals. You can use these services with a pulse line by following these steps. 1. With P/T set to P, call the tone service. 2. When the service answers, set P/T to T. 3. Follow the normal procedure for the service you are using. Any additional numbers you dial produce tone signals. 4. When you complete the call, set P/T back to P and hang up. RECORDING THE OUTGOING MESSAGE Before you can set the TAD to answer calls, you must record an outgoing message (the announcement that the caller hears when the TAD answers a call). The maximum length for your outgoing message is 16 seconds. CAUTION: To protect your home or office from theft, do not tell callers that you are away. Instead, say you cannot come to the phone. Follow these steps to record the announcement. 1. Press and hold down ANN for 2 seconds until the TAD beeps. 2. Speak in a normal voice about 12 inches from the front of the TAD. Ask for the caller's name, phone number, and message. 3. Press STOP/ERS to end your outgoing message. If you do not press STOP/ERS within 16 seconds, the TAD automatically stops. The TAD beeps once and automatically plays your outgoing message twice. NOTE: The TAD copies the outgoing message from the digital chip to the microcassette when it plays the message the second time. This stores the outgoing message in case of a power loss. CHECKING THE OUTGOING MESSAGE 1. Press ANN. The TAD plays the outgoing message. 2. Adjust VOL on the right side of the TAD. This does not affect the volume of the message on the telephone line. SETTING THE TAD TO ANSWER CALLS If the answer indicator lights steadily or flashes, the TAD is set to answer calls. When you press ANS, the TAD sounds a beep, rewinds to the beginning of the incoming messages and is set to answer calls. If you do not want the TAD to answer calls, press ANS so the TAD beeps once and the answer indicator turns off. Press ANS again to set the TAD to answer calls. NOTES: The answer indicator flashes while the TAD answers a call and records a message. When the caller hangs up, when 60 seconds elapse, or when there are more than 8 seconds of silence, the TAD hangs up and resets to answer the next call. After the TAD records a message, it rewinds to the beginning of the tape to update its backup information and then resets to record the next message. If the tape becomes full while a caller is leaving a message, the TAD sounds four beeps and hangs up. The answer indicator repeatedly flashes four times. When the tape is full, the TAD answers after two rings and sounds eight beeps instead of playing the message. The TAD will not answer a call while rewinding/fast-forwarding a tape. SCREENING CALLS If you want to screen incoming calls while you're at home, let the TAD answer the call for you. When the caller starts speaking, let the TAD record the message. Or, to talk to the caller, pick up the TAD's handset or any phone connected to the same phone line as the TAD. Press STOP/ERS on the TAD to have the TAD stop recording and reset to answer the next call. NOTE: To automatically stop the TAD when another phone is picked up, you can connect a voice/data guard (Cat. No. 43-107) between the modular phone jack and the TAD-278. PLAYING MESSAGES When you have messages, the answer indicator flashes to show the number of recorded messages. For example, if you have three messages, the indicator flashes three times, pauses, again flashes three times, etc. NOTE: The TAD can record up to 99 messages. To play back the recorded messages, press PLAY/FF. The TAD rewinds the tape and plays the messages. At the beginning of each message, the TAD sounds one beep. After the TAD plays all incoming messages, it beeps twice. The messages are saved until you erase them. REWIND AND FAST-FORWARD To replay a message while the tape plays, press and hold down MEMO/REW. The tape automatically stops at the beginning of the tape or when you release MEMO/REW, and begins to play. To fast-forward the tape, press and hold down PLAY/FF. You can hear sound as you fast-forward. The tape automatically stops at the end of the messages or begins normal play when you release PLAY/FF. ERASING MESSAGES NOTE: Be sure you have played all the messages before you erase them. Play the incoming messages. When the TAD beeps twice after all messages play, press STOP/ERS. The TAD beeps once and rewinds to the beginning of the incoming messages. The answer indicator lights steadily, and the TAD resets for the next call. New messages record over the old ones. RECORDING A MEMO Follow these steps to record a reminder for yourself or a message for someone else. Be sure you set the TAD to answer calls. NOTES: You can record a memo with ANS set to ON or OFF. The maximum recording time for a memo is one minute. 1. Press MEMO/REW. The TAD rewinds the tape and beeps once. 2. Begin recording the message. Speak in a clear voice about 12 inches away from the bottom of the TAD. 3. When you finish speaking, press STOP/ERS. The TAD beeps once and rewinds. The TAD registers the memo as an incoming message, adds it to the message count and plays it back when the messages are retrieved. REMOTE OPERATION While you are away from your home or office, you can use a touch-tone phone, or a pulse phone with a pocket tone dialer (such as Cat. No. 43- 139), to do any of the following: Set the TAD to start or stop answering calls Play or erase your messages Record a new outgoing message NOTE: If you are using a pulse phone, follow the pocket tone dialer's instructions. REMOTE ANSWER-ON NOTE: You must record an outgoing message before you can remotely set the TAD to answer calls. 1. Dial your phone number. After about 60 seconds, the TAD answers with four beeps. 2. Enter the remote operation security code within a seconds. The TAD beeps once and plays the outgoing message. NOTE: If you do not enter the security code within 8 seconds, the TAD disconnects the call. 3. Hang up or use the remote control commands. TOLL SAVER Toll Saver lets you avoid unnecessary toll charges when calling long- distance to check your messages. After the TAD records a message, it answers after 2 rings. If there are no messages recorded on the tape, the TAD answers after 4 rings. NOTE: The TAD must be set to answer calls. If you hear more than 2 rings, you know there are no messages. You can hang up so you will not be charged for the call. USING REMOTE CONTROL COMMANDS Follow these steps to operate the TAD from a remote phone. NOTE: Unless you enter remote control command 2 (Answer OFF) without listening to your messages, the TAD resets itself to answer calls after remote operation. 1. Dial your phone number. 2. After the outgoing message plays, the TAD sounds a beep. Enter the remote operation security code you programmed in "Programming the Security Code and Connecting Power" within 8 seconds. Hold down the button at least 2 seconds. NOTES: If you do not correctly enter the remote operation security code within 8 seconds, the TAD disconnects the call. If the tape is full when you call the TAD, the TAD answers after two rings. Then it sounds eight beeps instead of the outgoing message. Enter the remote operation security code within 8 seconds. 3. After the TAD beeps, enter a remote command within 8 seconds by pressing the number for the desired function. See "Remote Control Command Descriptions." After each operation, the TAD beeps. To end remote operation, hang up the phone. NOTES: If you do not enter a command within 8 seconds after a command prompt, the TAD sounds a beep and hangs up. If you hang up while the TAD plays back messages, the TAD might not recognize that you hung up. If someone calls while the TAD continues to play the new messages, the caller hears a busy signal.
