ET-400 DUoFONE Cordless Telephone System (430-0550B) Operation Faxback Doc. # 16895 Always set the Handset POWER switch to ON. This activates the Handset. If set to OFF, the Handset won't ring even if the incoming call is received. The OFF position is to recharge the Handset battery pack or when the ET-400 will not be in use for a while (like when vacationing). The security code will be maintained even with the Handset off. When near the Base Unit, use the Handset the same as an ordinary telephone. Lift the Handset from the Base Unit to get into "off-hook" state, return the Handset to the Base Unit cradle to hang up. When away from the Base Unit, the TALK PUSH HANG-UP button does the same thing. Pressing this button switches between on-hook/off-hook status. Watch the TALK indicator to see which mode the unit is in. QUICK REFERENCE TO SPECIAL KEYS Using the REDIAL Redial the last manually dialed number by pressing REDIAL. This temporary memory will hold up to 32 digits. If a busy signal is heard, simply hang up and wait a few minutes; then press the TALK PUSH HANG-UP key until the TALK indicator lights and press REDIAL. The redial memory is not affected by memory-dialed numbers, but the redial memory number is replaced each time a new number is manually entered. NOTE: If a redial is attempted for number that includes a mode change (LDT key), the phone will stop dialing when it reaches the LDT entry. To continue dialing, press the REDIAL key again. Using the PAUSE Some telephone systems, such as in offices, have a code number to dial and then must have a "pause" for the outside line to connect. When storing a number in memory (or for redial use), program this pause by pressing PAUSE in the desired position. Then, when memory-dialing or using redial, the ET-400 will stop at the PAUSE entry. Dialing will automatically continue after two seconds. For example, to store 9 (access code) 123-4567, press: 9 PAUSE 1234567 NOTE: PAUSE is counted as a digit in memory dialing. Using the PRIVACY Disconnect the microphone in the Handset without ending the call by pressing PRIVACY. As long as this key is held, callers cannot hear any sound coming through the ET-400, but their voice will still come through the speaker in the phone. Using the LDT To communicate with tone access equipment when on a rotary line, use the LDT button. When LDT is pressed (after the special service number), the unit switches from pulse mode to tone mode. The LDT button only works TONE/PULSE switch is set to PULSE. Using the FLASH There are many special phone service that require a hook-switch flash. The FLASH button does this. For example, call waiting is a special telephone company service available in some areas. The user can place a call on hold and take a second incoming call by pressing the FLASH button. Repeating the FLASH button signal allows the user to alternate between calls. NOTE: In areas where the call waiting service is not available, do not press this button during a telephone conversation. The line is temporarily hung up when the button is pressed. Storing a Number in the Memory Up to 16 phone numbers of 28 digits each may be stored in the memory. Each of these telephone numbers is given a two-digit code number (01-16) for memory dialing. 1. Lift the Handset from the Base Unit or press the TALK PUSH HANG- UP button. TALK indicator will light. 2. Press the MEMORY STORE key. 3. Press the number keys for the desired telephone number. 4. Press the MEMORY key. 5. Press a two-digit code number for the desired memory position (01-16). If there are any mistakes when entering a number, press the TALK PUSH HANG-UP button or return the Handset to the Base Unit and begin again with step 1 above. Example: Storing a seven-digit local number (eg. 123-4567) Press: Comments: TALK PUSH HANG-UP TALK LED lights. MEMORY STORE Prepares the memory for storing a number. 1234567 Enters the telephone number into the memory. MEMORY Tells the memory that the number is complete. 01 (Two-digit code) Assigns a two-digit code to the entered number; you may use any number from 01 to 16. TALK PUSH HANG-UP Returns the dial tone. CAUTION: When assigning a code number, any previous telephone number stored in that position is automatically erased. To continue storing numbers in the memory, repeat the procedure from the first step until all 16 memory positions are filled. Use the label on the back of the Handset to remember what number is stored in each position. Adding a Pause to a Number Some office telephone systems and computer services require a pause during dialing to allow access to an outside line or the computer. Add a pause when storing a number by pressing PAUSE in the desired position. Press PAUSE once and the ET-400 will pause two seconds at the PAUSE entry and then automatically continue dialing. Press PAUSE twice and the pause will be four seconds; three times will be six seconds, and so forth. Each time PAUSE is pressed, it counts as one of the 28 digits of memory capacity. Example: Storing 123-4567 with an access code of 9. Press: Comments: TALK PUSH HANG-UP TALK LED lights. MEMORY STORE Prepares the memory for storing a number. 9 (example only) Enters the access code. PAUSE Enters the pause. 1234567 Enters the telephone number into the memory. MEMORY Tells the memory that the number is complete. 02 (Two-digit code) Assigns a two-digit code to the entered number; you may use any number from 01 to 16. TALK PUSH HANG-UP Returns the dial tone. Special Service Memory Entries (Pulse mode only) To store a number that uses services such as bank-by-phone or alternate long distance when in pulse mode, the mode change key (LDT) needs to be entered. In areas where tone mode is available for use all the time, this key won't be needed. Here's an example of a typical alternate long distance service entry when the Base is set to PULSE. Press: Comments: TALK PUSH HANG-UP TALK LED lights. MEMORY STORE Prepares the unit to store a number. 9 (example only) Enter the outside line access code (if necessary). PAUSE Adds a pause (to allow time for the outside line to connect). 9876543 (example only) Enters the number of the special service. LDT Changes to tone mode to "talk" with a computer and auto-dialing stops. Your Code No. Enters your personal ID (billing) code No. 123-456-9012 Enters the area code and number to store. MEMORY Tells the memory that the number is complete. 03 (Two-digit code) Store the entire number (including pause and mode change) in the memory. Use any number from 01 to 16. NOTE: Pressing the LDT key counts as a digit in the memory's 28-digit capacity. Memory Dialing 1. Lift the Handset from the Base Unit or press the TALK PUSH HANG- UP button. 2. Press the MEMORY key. 3. Press the code number for the telephone number that should be dialed (01-16). If LDT is entered into memory, the dialing will stop at LDT entry. Press the MEMORY key again to continue the dialing. IMPORTANT: The memory numbers are stored in the Base. The circuit will hold the memory for approximately 2-1/2 hours without AC power, but if power is disconnected longer than that all stored numbers may have to be re-entered. Using the Number Label When storing numbers in the memory, make a note (person's name or a place) next to the code number, as a reminder of what number is stored in each position. Press the plastic cover to one side and remove it. Then write the desired information next to the corresponding code number and replace the cover. Use a pencil, in case changes need to be made to the stored numbers. Below the keyboard there's another number label, a home phone number can be written here. Testing the Battery The built-in battery pack in the Handset is automatically tested. When it needs recharging, the BATT LOW indicator will light. Be sure to recharge the battery pack before it becomes completely discharged. NOTE: If the battery pack is allowed to discharge completely, there might not be enough power to light the BATT LOW indicator. In this case, the battery pack must be charged for 24-48 hours. Changing the Battery Pack The battery pack has an average life of several years. However, after full charge, if the Handset does not work, the Nickel-Cadmium battery pack may need changing. To change the battery pack, remove the screw above the battery pack cover. Slide the cover off. Remove the screw that holds the retaining arm in place a pull out the ribbon. Detach the connector plug and remove the old battery pack. Attach the connector to the new battery pack and insert the pack with the connector wire dressed to the upper part of the compartment. Replace the ribbon, retainer screw, and cover. After charging the battery pack, be sure to charge the Handset on the Base Unit and re-enter the security code. An extra battery can be order at any Radio Shack store. Mounting the Belt Clip The Handset may be attached to a belt or to another convenient location. Use the screws supplied to mount the clip. THE FCC WANTS YOU TO KNOW It is very unlikely, but...if the ET-400 causes problems on a phone line, the telephone company has the right to discontinue service temporarily. If this happens, the telephone company will notify the customer and give them a chance to have the problem corrected. Also, the telephone company has the right to change their lines or equipment. If these changes affect the ET-400 or require changes in its connection, the telephone company will notify the customer in writing, so any steps necessary to ensure uninterrupted service can be taken. LIGHTNING This Radio Shack phone product has built-in protection circuits--that meet or exceed FCC requirements--to reduce risk or damage from surges in telephone and AC power line current. However, an incident such as a lightning strike near, or directly to, these lines may cause an excessive surge of voltage that can damage the phone device. Lightning damage is uncommon, but it can occur to phones and other electronic devices. If there is a concern in this regard or if there are frequent and/or severe electrical storms in the area, we suggest that electronics products be unplugged during the storms.
