After a few seconds, the system identification (e.g., 'NYC') and your telephone number are displayed for a short while. The normal display then appears (the system indicator, e.g. 'A' or 'B', depends on the system). The No Service (NSVC) indicator switches off when service is available. Signal strength is indicated on the display: 6 squares = strong signal 1 square = poor signal. ROAM CALL SIG The signal strength is also indicated by the green signal (SIG) light: Steady = strong signal Flashing = moderate-to-weak signal Not illuminated = very weak or no signal The NSVC indicator is displayed when cellular service is not available. SWITCHING OFF Press and hold PWR until you hear a confirmation tone. MAKING A CALL To call a number, press the appropriate number keys. A maximum of 32 digits can be entered. 123 NOTE: Be sure to include the area code if you are 456 7890 makinga long distance call. You may check that the displayed number is correct (if it is not, press CLR or END, then redial number). Press SEND. ROAM CALL SIG The red CALL light illuminates when the call is accepted by the network. 0 2 08 S After a few seconds, the IN-CALL display appears. The elapsed call time is displayed throughout the call (e.g. '02M 08' indicates 2 minutes and 8 seconds). The displayed call time is a guide only, and does not indicate actual network billing. (After 60 minutes the display shows hours and minutes e.g. '1H 10M'.) When the network connects your call, you will hear a ringing tone produced from the handset beeper or cradle loudspeaker. When the call is answered, lift the handset and speak, or if hands-free mode is in use, just speak towards the hands-free microphone. If a call attempt is unsuccessful, and error tone will be heard, the CALL light remains off, and the normal display returns. To repeat the call without re-entering the number press SEND. SYSTEM BUSY If the 'SYSTEM BUSY' message is displayed after a call attempt is made, then the system is currently too busy to accept your call. The telephone will make up to 10 automatically initiated re-dial attempts. To cancel the redial attempts press END. ENDING A CALL Press END. LAST Call duration (e.g., 2 minutes 14 seconds) is displayed 0 2M 14 for a few seconds. The normal display then returns. RECEIVING A CALL The phone must be turned on to receive calls. When you receive an incoming call a ringing tone is heard, and the text 'Call' flashes on the display (for up to 1 minute). Press any key or lift the handset from the cradle to answer the call; alternatively, the 'Auto Answer' facility (B5) may be used. ROAM CALL SIG The CALL light is illuminated. 2 If a call is not answered within 1 minute, it will be Calls disconnected from the network, and the CALL light will switch off. The number of unanswered calls (e.g., 2) is displayed. To return to the normal display press CLR. EMERGENCY SERVICES Emergency calls can always be made even if 'Call Restrictions' (D2) are set. To make an Emergency Call 1. Stop and make a note of your position. 2. If the telephone is off, press and hold PWR. 3. Dial the normal emergency telephone number (e.g., in the USA, press 9WXY 1D2 1D2), then press SEND to initiate the call. 4. Ask the operator for the service required. 5. Give the location of the incident to the emergency service operator. 6. Your telephone may be the only means of communication at the scene of the incident. Do not end the call until given permission to do so. To Easy Dial the Emergency Services: Press 9WXY and hold for at least 2 seconds. The Emergency number that has been programmed into the telephone by your cellular operator is recalled, displayed and then dialed. Once the call is established, the CALL light is illuminated, and the normal display returns. Refer to 'Easy Dialing'. CORRECTING DIALING MISTAKES Press CLR to remove a single digit from the display. Press END or press and hold CLR to clear all digits, and return to the normal display. LAST NUMBER REDIAL Clear the display, then press SEND until you hear a confirmation tone. CHANGING THE VOLUME The VOL key adjusts: Loudspeaker volume (if handset is on the cradle), or earpiece volume in handset, (if handset is off the cradle). Volume may be set at any time to one of five levels. Press VOL once to change volume by one level, or 02M 14 Press and hold VOL to take volume to its maximum level; V one further press takes the volume to its minimum level. The level selected is displayed: Maximum - 5 squares Minimum - 1 square. The level is displayed for a short time, and is then replaced by the normal display. Muting the Microphone You can mute the microphone during a call by pressing and holding down the PWR key. LOCKING/UNLOCKING THE TELEPHONE The telephone can be locked to prevent unauthorized access. When locked, the message "UNIT LOCKED" will be shown when the telephone is switched on. The unit will switch itself off shortly afterwards. To lock With the normal display, enter your 4-digit PIN and press and hold PWR. To unlock Press and hold PWR. The message 'UNIT LOCKED' will appear. Enter your 4-digit PIN. On entry of the fourth digit, the telephone will unlock. LOCKING/UNLOCKING THE KEYBOARD The keyboard can be locked (to avoid accidental keypresses). To lock/unlock With a normal display, press #EZ2 then press and hold PWR. On locking, the message 'KEY LOCK' will appear. Repeat the process to unlock the keyboard. The keyboard is unlocked automatically by an incoming call. Adjusting Ringer Volume: 1. Press MU twice. 2. Select B1. 3. Hold MU until ring volume is correct. 4. Exit. (br/all-11/08/95)
