TAD-265 Cordless Telephone Answering System (430-0730) Installation Faxback Doc. # 17228 READ THIS BEFORE INSTALLATION Each device that you connect to the phone line draws power from the phone line. We refer to this power draw as the device's ringer equivalence number, or REN. The REN is shown on the bottom of your TAD. If you are using more than one device on the line, add up all the RENs, if the total is more than five, your phone might not ring and your TAD might not answer. In rural areas, a total REN of three might impair ringer operation. NOTE: You must not connect your TAD to: Coin-operated systems Party-line systems Most electronic key phone systems SELECTING A LOCATION Select a location that is all of the following: Near an AC outlet Near a telephone jack Out of the way of normal activities Away from electrical machinery, electrical appliances, and metal walls or filing cabinets Away from wireless intercoms, alarms, and room monitors Away from other cordless phones The base's location affects the phone's range. If you have a choice of several locations, try each location to see which one provides the best performance. INSTALLING THE BASE To install the base, do the following: 1. Turn the supplied cassette's hub with a pencil to take up any tape slack. 2. Install the cassette in the compartment. Be sure the open edge of the cassette is toward the front of the TAD and the full reel is on the right. NOTES: You can buy additional cassettes or cassettes of a different length at your local Radio Shack Store. Replace the tape at least once a year - more often if used heavily. 3. Plug one end of the supplied modular cord into the TEL LINE jack on the back of the base. 4. Plug the cord's other end into a modular phone line jack. NOTE: If the phone line jack is not a modular jack, update the wiring. You can convert the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapters available at your local Radio Shack store. Or, you can let the phone company update the wiring for you. The phone company will charge you for the installation of necessary jacks. The phone company will ask you for the USOC number of the jack to be installed. This number is RJ11C. 5. Insert the supplied AC adapter's barrel plug into the DC power jack on the back of the base. CAUTION: You must use a 120 volt AC/7.5 volt DC adapter that delivers at least 400 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative and its plug must correctly fit the TAD's DC jack. The supplied adapter meets these requirements. Using an adapter that does not meet these requirements could damage the TAD or the adapter. 6. Plug the adapter into an AC outlet. When you first apply power, or when power is restored after a power failure, the TAD positions the tape to prepare for operation. This takes up to 1 minute. If there is no backup outgoing announcement on the message tape, the TAD beeps. Record your announcement. See "Recording the Outgoing Announcement." If there is a backup outgoing announcement on the message tape, the TAD restores the announcement from tape into memory. CHARGING THE BATTERY PACK You must charge the battery pack in the handset for at least 24 hours before you use the phone for the first time. Recharge the battery when the CHARGE indicator blinks and the handset beeps. To charge or recharge the battery pack, place the handset on the cradle. The CHARGE indicator lights. When you first place the handset on the cradle, the system's security access-protection code (not your personal security code) automatically sets to prevent others with cordless phones from using your telephone line. NOTES: If the CHARGE indicator does not stay lit when you place the handset on the cradle, be sure the AC adapter is properly connected. Also, check the charging contacts on the handset and base. If the contacts are dirty or tarnished, clean them with a pencil eraser. A full charge lasts about one day in the standby mode. Be sure to return the handset to the base when you see the CHARGE indicator blinking. After the first charging, recharge the handset's battery pack 2 hours for every 1 hour of use. About once a month, fully discharge the battery. Otherwise, the battery loses its ability to fully recharge, and you will have to recharge and replace it more often. To fully discharge the battery, keep the handset off the cradle until the CHARGE indicator comes on. Then return the handset to the cradle and fully recharge the battery.
