TAD-265 Cordless Telephone Answering System (430-0730) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 17229 Complete the procedures in this section before you use the TAD-265. SETTING THE DIALING MODE Set TONE/PULSE for the type of service you have. If you are not sure which type of service you have, do this test. 1. Set TONE/PULSE to TONE. 2. Lift the handset and listen for a dial tone. 3. Press any number other than 0. NOTE: If your phone system requires that you dial an access code (9, for example) before you dial an outside number, do not press 0 or the access code. If the dial tone continues, you have pulse service, Set TONE/PULSE to PULSE and return the handset to the cradle. The next time you make a call, the phone uses pulse dialing. SETTING THE CPC SWITCH Set the CPC (Calling Party Control) switch for the type of system your telephone company uses. Begin with the switch set to MAX. If your answering machine often records a telephone company message, dial tones, and so on, set the switch to MIN. NOTE: Call waiting, a service offered by most telephone companies, uses signals identical to CPC signals. If you have this service, you should set the CPC switch to MAX. Otherwise, if the answering machine receives a second call while the first caller is leaving a message, the answering machine might hang up during the first caller's message. RECORDING THE OUTGOING ANNOUNCEMENT Before you can use the TAD, you must record the outgoing announcement that the caller hears when the TAD answers a call. Your announcement can be up to 21 seconds long. Ask for the caller's name, phone number, and a message. WARNING: To help protect your home or office from theft, do not tell callers that you are away. Instead, say that you cannot come to the phone. Follow these steps to record the announcement. 1. Turn off all indicators on the base and handset. (Press TALK to turn off the talk indicator; press STOP to turn off the answer indicator.) 2. Press REMOTE. 3. Press * then 5. You hear intermittent beeps while the TAD rewinds the tape for the announcement backup. 4. When the tape fully rewinds, you hear a 1-second beep. Speak your outgoing announcement into the mouthpiece of the handset. 5. Press 0 to end your outgoing announcement. If you do not press 0 within 21 seconds, the TAD automatically stops. NOTE: When you record your outgoing announcement, the TAD records it on the message tape simultaneously for a backup copy. If the TAD loses power, the outgoing announcement is no longer in memory. When power restores, the TAD retrieves the backup outgoing announcement from the message tape. CHECKING THE OUTGOING ANNOUNCEMENT Check the announcement as follows: 1. Turn off all indicators on the base and handset. (Press TALK to turn off the talk indicator; press STOP to turn off the answer indicator.) 2. Press REMOTE, then 5. A 1-second beep sounds and the TAD plays the announcement. SETTING THE MAXIMUM INCOMING MESSAGE LENGTH You can select the maximum incoming message length that the callers can record - 3 minutes or 30 seconds. The factory-set length is 3 minutes. To change to 30 seconds: 1. Turn off all indicators on the base and handset. (Press TALK to turn off the talk indicator; press STOP to turn off the answer indicator.) 2. Press * then MEMORY. The HOLD/INTERCOM indicator starts to blink and a beep sounds. 3. Press 8 then #. 4. Press MEMORY to store the new setting. The HOLD/INTERCOM indicator starts to blink and a beep sounds. 3. Press ANSWER. 4. Enter the new setting using the number button on the handset. Press a number from 1 to 7 to designate the number of times you want the phone to ring before the TAD answers it. Press 8 to designate the toll saver setting. 5. Press MEMORY to store the new setting. The HOLD/INTERCOM indicator goes off and a long beep sounds. SETTING TO THE ANNOUNCE ONLY MODE You can set your answering machine so it plays the outgoing announcement but does not record an incoming message. This is useful for announcing information for an event. To set to the announce only mode: 1. Be sure the TALK indicator is off. 2. Press * then MEMORY. The HOLD/INTERCOM indicator starts to blink and a beep sounds. 3. Press 7 then #. 4. Press MEMORY to store the new setting. The HOLD/INTERCOM indicator goes off and a long beep sounds. In your recorded announcement, make it clear that the caller cannot leave a message. See "Recording The Outgoing Announcement." To go back to the incoming message recording mode, repeat Steps 1-4 but press * instead of # in Step 3. NOTE: The TAD must be set to answer calls before it will play the announcement (see "Setting the TAD to Answer Calls"). SETTING THE VOLUME The telephone answering system has three volume controls: Base Volume Switch - set this switch to OFF, Lo, or Hi to control the message playback or intercom volume. Handset Ringer Volume Switch - set this switch to OFF, LO, or HI to control the ringer volume at the handset.
