ET-507 Cordless Phone (430-1012) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 17370 Before you use your phone for the first time, you must install and charge the battery. To install the battery, slide off the battery cover on the back of the handset. Then connect the battery to the pins inside the battery compartment. CHARGING THE BATTERY When you install a new battery, set POWER to OFF. Then charge the battery for about 14-16 hours. It is a good idea to use another phone during this period. To charge or recharge the battery, place the handset on the cradle so the CHARGE/TALK indicator lights. Recharge the battery when the LOW BATT lights on the handset. NOTES: The first time you use your new phone after installing the battery, the sound might not work or sound an error tone when you press TALK. This might also occur when you recharge a battery that has been completely discharged. If this happens, be sure the handset is turned on. Then return the handset to the cradle for 5 seconds. This resets the security access code. If the CHARGE/TALK indicator does not light when you put the handset on the cradle, be sure the battery is connected to the pins inside the battery compartment (see "Replacing the Battery"), and the AC adapter is securely connected at the base. Also check the charging contacts on the handset on the base. If the contacts are dirty or tarnished, gently clean them with a pencil eraser. About once a month, fully discharge the battery by keeping the handset off the cradle until LOW BATT flashes. Then return the handset to the cradle and recharge the battery for 10 hours. REPLACING THE BATTERY If you follow the instructions in "Charging the Battery" the supplied battery should last for several years. When the battery loses its ability to fully charge, order a replacement battery through your local Radio Shack store. Install the new battery as described below, and then charge the battery (see "Charging the Battery"). 1. Slide off the battery compartment cover on the back of the handset. Loosen the plastic strap securing the battery, and remove the battery. 2. Replace the battery and secure the plastic strap. Connect the battery's pins to the pins inside the battery compartment. 3. Replace the battery compartment cover. CAUTION: Your telephone contains a rechargeable nickel cadmium battery. At the end of the battery's useful life, it must be disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that might be available are: municipal curb-side collection, drop off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail back programs. SETTING THE DIALING MODE Set the TONE/PULSE for the type of service you have. If you are not sure what type of service you have, do this test. 1. Set the TONE/PULSE to TONE. 2. Lift the handset, press TALK, and listen for a dial tone. 3. Press any number other than 0. If the dial tone stops, you have touch tone service. If the dial tone continues you have pulse (rotary) service. Set TONE/PULSE to PULSE and return the handset to the base before using. TURNING ON/OFF THE RINGER Set the handset's power to on before you turn on/off its ringer. To turn off the ringer, press and hold # for about 2 seconds until a long beep sounds. To turn on the ringer, press and hold the # for about 2 seconds until 5 short beeps sound. NOTE: With the ringer off, you can still make or receive phone calls using the cordless phone. Telephones on the same line still ring when there is an incoming call, the handset's TALK indicator flashes, and the CHARGE/TALK indicator flashes on the base until you answer the call. SETTING THE VOLUME Adjust VOLUME HI/LOW on the handset to control volume of the sound you hear through the handset. (CD/all-10/25/95)
