Caller ID Speakerphone System 1200 (430-0967) Installation Faxback Doc. # 17732 Read This Before Installation We have designed your telephone to conform to federal regulations, and you can connect it to most telephone lines. However, each device that you connect to the phone line draws power from the phone line. We refer to this power draw as the device's ringer equivalence number, or REN. The REN is shown on the bottom of your phone. If you are using more than one phone or other device on the line, add up all the RENs. If the total is more than five, your phones might not ring. In rural areas, total REN of three might impair ringer operation. If ringer operation is impaired, disconnect one of the devices from the line. FCC Statement This telephone complies with Part 68 of FCC Rules. You must, upon request, provide the FCC Registration Number and the REN to your phone company. These items are located on the bottom of your phone. NOTE: You must not connect your phone to any of the following: Coin-operated systems Party-line systems Most electronic key telephone systems To make sure your system works properly, follow this sequence to install it. 1. Select a location. 2. Install batteries. 3. If necessary, connect optional AC adapter. 4. Initialize the system. 5. Mount the system. 6. Connect the handset SELECTING A LOCATION You can place the system on a flat surface such as a desk, shelf, or table, mount it on a wall plate, or mount it directly on the wall. Select a location where the system is near a modular phone jack and an AC outlet (if needed), and out of the way of normal activities If your telephone wiring does not have a modular jack, you can: Update the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapters available at your local Radio Shack store. Have the phone company update the wiring for you. NOTES: The phone company charges to install the necessary jack. The USCO number of the jack to be installed is RJ11C for a baseboard jack or RJ11W for a wall-plate jack Installing/ Replacing Batteries Your system requires four AA batteries. For the longest operation and best performance, we recommend alkaline batteries (such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552). If you connect an optional AC adapter, the batteries protect the system's memory during power failures. If you do not connect an AC adapter, the batteries power all system functions except message waiting. CAUTIONS: Use only fresh batteries of the requires size and type. When you are replacing the batteries, have fresh batteries on hand before you begin. If you do not connect an AC adapter, you must install fresh batteries within 2 minutes after removing the old batteries; otherwise, you might lose the information stored in your system When you are replacing the batteries, do not press any buttons on the system after you remove the old batteries. Doing so might erase all stored information from the system Never leave dead or weak batteries in the system. Dispose of old batteries properly and promptly; do not bury or burn them. 1. Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the screw in the battery compartment cover on the bottom of the system, remove the cover. 2. Insert fresh batteries into the compartment as indicated by the polarity symbols (+and-) marked inside the compartment 3. Replace the cover and secure it with the screw. The system automatically tests the batteries at 12:00AM each day. If the battery symbol appears on the display or the display dims, replace the batteries. Connecting An Optional AC Adapter If you subscribe to a message waiting service, you need and AC adapter (such as Cat. No. 273-1455) to power the system. NOTE: You must also keep fresh batteries installed in the system to protect the information stored in memory during power failure CAUTIONS: You must use an AC adapter that supplies 9 volts DC power and delivers at least 50 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must correctly fit the system's DC 9V jack. The recommended adapter meets these specifications. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could damage the system or the adapter. Always connect the AC adapter to the system before you plug it into the AC outlet, and unplug the adapter from the AC outlet before you unplug it from the system. Follow these steps to connect an AC adapter. NOTE: If the system is already installed, unplug the phone line from the system. 1. Insert the AC adapter's barrel plug into the DC 9V jack on the back of the system 2. Plug the other end of the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet. Initializing The System Before you use the system the first time or to reset the system's clock at any time, use a pointed object, such as a straightened paper clip, to press RESET on the back of the system. 12:00 AM appears on the display. NOTE: If the system does not work after you initialize it, remove the batteries and replace them with fresh ones if necessary, disconnect the system from the phone line and the AC outlet, then reconnect it and try initializing it again Clearing The System's Memory If the system does not work properly after you initialize it, or to clear all stored information in it, you can clear the system's memory. 1. Press and hold down STORE for about 5 seconds until CANCEL ? appears. 2. Press DELETE within 30 seconds. The systems beeps and "------------" appears on the display Mounting The System The supplied stand comes attached to the system for wall plate or wall mounting. On a Desk Top Follow these steps to install the system on a desk, shelf, or table. 1. To remove the stand, while pressing and holding in both spring tabs on the wide end of the stand, gently pull up the wide end of the stand and lift it off 2. Plug one end of the supplied long modular cord into the TEL.LINE jack on the back of the system 3. Plug the other end of the modular cord into a modular phone jack. 4. Place the system on the desk, shelf, or table. On A Wall Plate NOTE: A selection of wall plates is available at your local Radio Shack store. Follow these steps to mount the system on a standard wall plate. 1. To remove the stand, while pressing and holding in both spring tabs on the wide end of the stand, gently pull up the wide end of the stand and lift it off 2. Plug one end of the supplied short modular cord into the TEL.LINE jack on the back of the system 3. Route the modular cord through the hole on the bottom of the stand. 4. Re-attach the stand. Feed any excess modular cord into the cavity inside the stand. 5. Plug the other end of the modular cord into the wall plate's modular phone line jack. 6. Align the keyhole slots on the bottom of the stand with the mounting studs on the wall plate, then carefully push the system onto the studs and slide it down 7. Slide the handset holder up to remove it, then turn it 180 degrees and reinsert it to secure the handset when you hang it up Directly on the Wall To install the system directly on the wall, you need two screws (not supplied) with heads that fit into the keyhole slots on the bottom of the stand. 1. To remove the stand, while pressing and holding in both spring tabs on the wide end of the stand, gently pull up the wide end of the stand and lift it off 2. Mark the positions for both screw holes 3 15/16 inches apart. 3. In both marked locations, drill a hole slightly smaller than the screw. CAUTION: Be careful not to drill into any objects behind the wall. 4. Thread the screws into the wall, letting each head extend 1/8 inch from the wall. 5. Plug one end of the supplied long modular cord into TEL.LINE jack on the back of the system. Then route the cord down the center of the back of the system. 6. Re-attach the stand. Make sure the slots on the top and bottom of the stand are over the modular cord. 7. Align the keyhole slots on the bottom of the stand with the screw heads in the wall, the carefully push the system onto the screw heads and slide it down. 8. Plug the other end of the modular cord into a modular phone line jack. 9. Slide the handset holder up to remove the, then turn it 180 degrees and reinsert it to secure the handset when you hang it up. Connecting the Handset 1. Plug one end of the supplied coiled cord into the modular jack on the handset. 2. Plug the other end of the coiled cord into the handset jack on the left side of the system. NOTE: Your local Radio Shack store carries several different lengths of coiled cords, especially useful when wall mounting the phone. (/all-11/03/95)
