Full-Duplex Speakerphone (430-0243) Installation Faxback Doc. # 17762 READ THIS BEFORE INSTALLATION We have designed your speakerphone to conform to federal regulations, and you can connect it to most telephone lines. However, each device you connect to the telephone line draws power from the line. We refer to this power draw as the deviceÆs ringer equivalence number (REN). The REN is marked on the bottom of the speakerphone. If you use more than one device on the line, add up all the RENs. If the total is more than five, your telephones might not ring. In rural areas, a total REN of three might impair ringer operation. CHOOSING A LOCATION Select a location for the speakerphone where the wires will not be in the way of normal activities. Be sure it is near a telephone jack and a standard AC outlet. CONNECTING TO THE PHONE AND PHONE LINE This speakerphone connects to a modular wall jack. To connect the speakerphone to your phone and phone line, follow these steps. 1. Unplug the phoneÆs modular telephone cord from the wallÆs modular telephone jack. 2. Plug the phoneÆs cord into the speakerphoneÆs modular phone jack. 3. Plug the speakerphoneÆs attached modular telephone cord into the wall jack. If you do not have a modular jack, you can: Update the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapter available at your local Radio Shack store. Have the phone company update the wiring for you NOTE: The phone company will charge you for the installation of the necessary jacks. They might ask you for the USOC number of the jack to be installed. This number is RJ11C. CONNECTING TO POWER The supplied AC adapter powers the speakerphone. CAUTION: To protect the speakerphone and the adapter, you must use a Class II, 120V AC/9V DC adapter, such as the supplied adapter. It must deliver at least 400 milliamps, its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must correctly fit the speakerphoneÆs DC 9V jack. Insert the adapterÆs barrel plug into the DC 9V jack on the back of the speakerphone. Then plug the adapterÆs other end into a standard AC outlet. After 1 or 2 seconds, the speakerphone clicks to determine the sound characteristics of the room. ADJUSTING THE LINE STATUS DETECTOR You should hear a dial tone from the speakerphone immediately after turning it on, but the tone should stop when you lift the phoneÆs handset. If the speakerphone does not work properly, try adjusting the sensitivity of the line status detector using a small flatblade screwdriver. Follow these steps to adjust the sensitivity of the detector: 1. Press SPEAKER to turn on the speakerphone. The red SPEAKERPHONE indicator lights and a dial tone sounds. If you do not hear a dial tone, insert the screwdriver into the ADJUST LINE STATUS hole (located on the bottom left of the speakerphone). First, turn the screw clockwise as far as it will go, then slowly turn the screw counterclockwise until you hear the dial tone. 2. Lift the phoneÆs handset. If you still hear a dial tone from the speakerphone, slowly turn the screwdriver clockwise until the dial tone stops. 3. Place the handset on the cradle and press SPEAKER to turn off the speakerphone. Repeat steps 1 through 3 as necessary until the sensitivity is properly adjusted. (EB 1/15/96)
