This temporary memory will hold up to 32 digits. If there is a busy signal, simply hang up and wait a few minutes; then press the TALK PUSH HANG-UP key until the TALK indicator lights and press REDIAL. The redial memory is not affected by memory-dialed numbers, but the redial memory is replaced each time a new number is manually entered. The redial memory number is cleared when the TONE/PULSE switch is slid to change mode. NOTE: When attempting to redial a number that includes a mode change (LDT key), the phone will stop dialing when it reaches the LDT entry. To continue dialing, press the REDIAL key again. Using the PAUSE Some telephone systems, such as in offices, need to dial code number and then "pause" for the outside line to connect. When storing a number in memory (or for redial use), program this pause by pressing PAUSE in the desired position. This enables the ET-410 to stop at the PAUSE entry while memory-dialing. Dialing will automatically continue after two seconds. For example, to sore 9 (access code) 123-4567, press: 9 PAUSE 1234567 NOTE: Pause is counted as a digit in memory dialing. Using the PRIVACY It is possible to disconnect the microphone in the Handset, without ending the call, by pressing PRIVACY. As long as this key is held, callers cannot hear anything spoken into the ET-410, but their voices are still heard. Using the LDT To communicate with touch-tone access equipment when on a rotary line, use the LDT key. When LDT is pressed (after the special service number), the unit switches from pulse mode to tone mode. LDT is only operative when the TONE/PULSE switch is set to PULSE. Using the FLASH There are many special phone services that require a hook-switch flash. The FLASH button will do this. For example, call waiting is a special telephone company service available in some areas. The user can place a call on hold and take a second incoming call by pressing the FLASH key. Repeating the FLASH key signal allows the user to alternate between calls. NOTE: In areas where the call waiting service is not available, do not press this button during a telephone conversation. The line is momentarily hung up when this button is pressed. Storing a Number in the Memory Up to 32 phone numbers of 28 digits each may be stored in the memory. Each of these telephone numbers is given a two-digit code number (01 - 32) for memory dialing. 1. Lift the Handset from the Base Unit or press TALK PUSH HANG-UP button. TALK indicator will light. 2. Press MEMORY STORE button. 3. Press the number keys for the desired telephone number. 4. Press MEMORY key. 5. Press two-digit code number for the desired memory position (01 - 32). To continue storing numbers in the memory, repeat the procedure from the third step until all 32 memory positions are filled. Use the label on the back of the Handset as a reminder of what number is stored in each position. Adding a Pause to a Number Some office telephone systems and computer services require a pause during dialing to allow access to an outside line or the computer. Add a pause when storing a number by pressing PAUSE in the desired position. If PAUSE is pressed once, the ET-410 will pause two seconds at the PAUSE entry and automatically continue dialing. Press PAUSE twice and the pause will be four seconds; three times will be six seconds, and so forth. Each time PAUSE is pressed, it counts as one of the 28 digits of memory capacity. IMPORTANT: The circuit will hold the memory for approximately 2-1/2 hours without AC power, but if power is disconnected longer than that all stored numbers may need to be re-entered. Using the Number Label When storing numbers in the memory, make a note (person's name or a place) next to the code number for a reminder of what number is stored in each position. Press the plastic cover to one side and remove it. Then write the desired information next to the corresponding code number and replace the cover. Use a pencil, in case stored numbers need to be changed. Below the keyboard there's another number label. Write down the home phone number here. Testing the Battery The built-in battery pack in the Handset is automatically tested. When it needs recharging, the BATT LOW indicator will light. Be sure to recharge the battery pack before it becomes completely discharged. NOTE: If the battery pack is allowed to discharge completely, there might not be enough power to light the BATT LOW indicator. In this case, the battery pack must be charge for 24 - 48 hours. Changing the Battery Pack The battery pack has an average life of several years. However, after full charge, if the Handset does not work, the Nickel-Cadmium battery pack may need to be changed. 1. Remove the screw above the battery pack cover. Slide the cover off. 2. Remove the screw that holds the retaining arm in place and pull out the ribbon. 3. Detach the connector plug and remove the old battery pack. Attach the connector to the new battery pack and insert the pack with the connector wire dressed to the upper part of the compartment. 4. Replace the ribbon, retainer screw, and cover. After changing the battery pack, be sure to charge the Handset on the Base Unit and re-enter the security code. Extra batteries can be ordered at a local Radio Shack store. Mounting the Belt Clip Using the Intercom Features To call the Base Unit, press CALL on the Handset until someone answers the regular telephone connected to the Base Unit by lifting its receiver and switching to INTERCOM. To call the Handset, switch to INTERCOM and then press CALL on the Base Unit. The person with the Handset may answer by pressing TALK PUSH HANG- UP, the same as for an outside telephone call. When answering an outside call on the regular telephone, the Handset may be signalled to join the conversation by pressing CALL. When TALK PUSH HANG- UP is pressed on the Handset, the Handset will be on the line, like an extension telephone. The ET-410 is designed to signal if an outside call is received during an intercom conversation. The ringer on the Base Unit will sound when this happens. To answer the outside call, simply slide the switch on the Base Unit from INTERCOM to TALK position. To end an intercom call, slide the switch from INTERCOM to TALK position and hang up the regular telephone; press TALK PUSH HANG-UP on the Handset. When hanging up with the selector switch is set at INTERCOM position, a warning tone is generated in ten seconds to remind the user to set to TALK position. Explanation of Three Positions TALK This position means the unit works as a telephone. Set the switch to this position to receive outside calls. TELEPHONE HOLD When a regular telephone is connected to the Base Unit, use this position to put an outside call on hold while carrying on an intercom conversation with someone at the Handset. When receiving an outside call from the regular telephone, slide this switch to the HOLD position and press CALL to call the Handset. In this position, a two-way conversation is possible, or a three-way conversation is possible by leaving this switch set to TALK. An outside call remains on hold for up to six minutes. To release hold, slide the switch to TALK. After three minutes in the HOLD position, an alarm tone sounds twice every 10 seconds for two minutes and the HOLD indicator flashes. At five minutes the tones become more frequent. During the last minute the INTERCOM indicator flashes. After six minutes, the hold call will automatically be cut off and the ET-410 enters the intercom mode. The INTERCOM indicator and the tones will continue until the switch is released from HOLD to TALK. INTERCOM This position creates an intercom between the Handset and the regular telephone connected to the Base Unit. THE FCC WANTS YOU TO KNOW It is very unlikely, but...if the ET-410 causes problems on the phone line, the telephone company has the right to discontinue service temporarily. If this happens, the telephone company will give notification and offer the opportunity to have the problem corrected. Also, the telephone company has the right to change their lines and equipment. If these changes affect the ET-410 or require changes to its connection, the telephone company will give written notification, so any necessary steps can be taken to ensure uninterrupted telephone service.
