TAD-1001 Digital Telephone Answering System (430-0741) Installation Faxback Doc. # 18449 CHOOSING A LOCATION Choose a location for the TAD that is: Not in the way of normal activities Near a telephone jack Near an AC outlet MAKING THE CONNECTIONS Connecting to the Telephone Line Insert the end of the supplied modular cord into a modular phone line jack. NOTES: If you want to connect the TAD and a phone to the same phone line jack, use a duplex jack (such as Cat. No. 279-357). If the phone line jack is not a modular jack, you must update the wiring. You can convert the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapters available at your local Radio Shack store. Or, you can let the phone company update the wiring for you. The phone company update the wiring for you. The phone company will charge you for the installation of the necessary jacks. The USOC number of the jack to be installed is RJ11C. Connecting the AC Adapter CAUTION: You must use a Class II AC adapter that supplies 9 volts of power, delivers at least 400 milliamps, and has a plug that properly fits the TAD's DC 9V jack with its tip set to negative. The supplied adapter meets these specifications. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could damage the adapter and TAD. 1. Insert the small round plug of the supplied adapter into the DC 9V jack. 2. Route the adapter's cord through the strain-relief slot on the back of the TAD. This prevents the cord from being accidentally unplugged from the TAD. 3. Plug the other end of the AC adapter cord into a standard AC outlet. The TAD says "Set time, date, and remote code." NOTES: Be sure not to press any of the TAD's buttons while you are plugging the adapter into the AC outlet. If you accidentally press a button and do not hear the proper announcement in Step 3, reset the TAD by unplugging the adapter from the AC, waiting a few minutes, outlet and reinserting it. If the backup batteries are already installed, the TAD does not say, "Set time, date, and remote code" when you plug in the adapter. INSTALLING THE BACKUP BATTERIES If the AC power fails or you unplug the TAD, the backup batteries save the messages, message count, and the settings for the messages, clock, calendar, and security code. Use four AA batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552. Follow these steps to install the backup batteries: 1. To remove the battery compartment cover on the bottom of the TAD, press the cover's tab in the direction of the arrow, and lift off the cover. 2. Insert four AA batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+and-) marked inside the battery compartment. 3. Replace the cover. Replace the batteries if the POWER/LOW BATT indicator flashes when the AC adapter is properly connected. To stop the indicator from flashing, press NEXT/YES. CAUTIONS: Always use fresh batteries of the required size and type. Do not mix old and new batteries. Dispose of batteries properly. Do not bury or burn them. MOUNTING THE TAD To mount the TAD on a wall, you need two #4 screws with heads that fit into the TAD's keyhole slots. 1. Mark two holes on the wall, one beside the other, approximately 3 3/16 inches apart. 2. Drill two screws into the marked locations, letting the heads extend about 1/8 inch from the wall. 3. Align the keyhole slots on the back of the TAD with the screws' heads, then pull down gently on the TAD until it is secure. (PH 10/26/95)
