CHOOSING A LOCATION Choose a location for the phone that is near a phone jack and an AC outlet (if you use an AC adapter) and is not in the way of normal activities. You can mount your phone directly on a wall or telephone wall plate, or place it on a desk. INSTALLING THE BATTERIES The phone requires four AA batteries to store and protect the phone numbers in memory. For longest life, we recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552. Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. Remove the battery compartment's screw on the bottom of the phone and open the battery compartment. If you are replacing batteries, remove and properly dispose of the old batteries. 2. Install the as batteries indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the battery compartment. CAUTION: If you incorrectly install the batteries, you might damage the phone. 3. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw. When replacing batteries, unplug the phone from the phone line and have your new batteries within reach. CONNECTING THE HANDSET CORD Follow these steps to connect the handset cord. 1. Plug one end of the supplied coiled cord into the jack on the phone handset. 2. Plug the other end into the jack on the side of the phone. NOTE: The local Radio Shack store sells longer coiled handset cords, which are especially useful if you wall-mount the phone. CONNECTING AN OPTIONAL AC ADAPTER FOR THE CALLER ID SYSTEM You will need an optional AC adapter, such as Radio Shack Cat. Route the AC adapter cord through the strain-relief slot on the bottom of the phone. 3. Insert the AC adapter cord's plug into a standard outlet. INITIALIZING THE TELEPHONE Carefully follow these steps to initialize your phone. CAUTION: Only use this procedure before using your phone or if you need to reset it as it erases all the information in memory. 1. Press RESET with a pointed object, such as a ball-point pen. The time resets to 12:00. 2. Press and hold < until CANCEL appears. Press DELETE to clear all Caller ID files. 3. Press CLOCK to display the time. 4. Hold down STORE until CANCEL appears. Press DELETE to clear the memories. CONNECTING TO THE TELEPHONE LINE If you are not mounting the phone on a wall, follow these steps to connect the telephone to the telephone line. 1. NOTES: If you do not have a modular phone jack, you can either update the wiring yourself or the phone company can update it for you. Radio Shack stores sell the jack and adapters necessary to convert from older wiring methods to modular wiring. The telephone company will charge you for the installation of necessary jacks. The telephone company will ask you for the USOC number of the jack to be installed. The number is RJ11C for a desk phone or RJ11W for a wall phone.
