TAD-222 Telephone Answering System (430-0722) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 18774 We have designed your TAD to conform to federal regulations, and you can connect it to most telephone lines. However, each device you connect to the phone line draws power from it. This power draw is the device's Ringer Equivalence Number, or REN. The REN is shown on the bottom of the TAD. If you use more than one phone or other device on the line, add up all the RENs. If the total is more than five (or three in rural areas), your phone(s) might not ring and your TAD might not answer. If ringer operation is impaired, remove one of the devices from the line. FCC STATEMENT Your TAD complies with Part 68 of FCC Rules. You must, upon request, provide the FCC registration number and the REN to your telephone company. Both numbers are marked on the bottom of the TAD. NOTE: You must connect the TAD to: Coin-operated systems Party-line systems Most electronic key phone systems CHOOSING A LOCATION Select a location for the TAD that is near a modular telephone jack and an AC outlet and away from normal activities. NOTE: Your TAD connects to a modular phone line jack. If your telephone wiring does not have a modular jack, you can update the wiring yourself or have the telephone company update it for you. Radio Shack stores sell jacks and adapters to convert older wiring methods to modular wiring. The telephone company charges to install the necessary jacks. The USOC number of the jack to be installed is RJ11C. CONNECTING TO THE PHONE LINE To connect the TAD to the phone line, plug TEL. LINE into a modular phone jack. If you want to connect the TAD and your phone to the same phone line, plug the telephone cord's modular plug into TEL. on the back of the TAD. INSTALLING THE CASSETTE TAPE Your TAD is supplied with an MC-30 tape (15 minutes recording timer per side). You can buy additional and different length cassettes at your local Radio Shack store. Follow these steps to install the tape. 1. Remove the cassette's stopper bracket, then turn its hub clockwise with a pencil to take up any tape slack. 2. Lift the cassette compartment cover from the recessed area to the right of the compartment. 3. Remove the tape head spacer. 4. Install the cassette in the compartment with the cassette's open end toward the front of the TAD and the full reel to the right. 5. Close the cover. NOTE: Replace the tape at least once a year, or more often if used heavily. CONNECTING TO POWER CAUTION: To prevent the TAD from locking up, be sure the supplied cassette tape is installed before you connect the TAD to power. If the TAD locks up, simply disconnect power, install the cassette tape, then reconnect power. To connect AC power, plug the supplied AC adapter's barrel plug into the TAD's DC9V jack. Then plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. CAUTION: You must use a Class II, 9 volt DC adapter that delivers at least 500 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative and its plug must correctly fit the TAD's DC 9V jack. The supplied adapter meets these requirements. Using an adapter that does not meet these requirements could damage the TAD or the adapter. NOTE: When you first plug the adapter into power, or when power is restored after a power failure, the TAD can take up to 1 minute to position the tape. If you have not recorded an outgoing message, the TAD rewinds the tape and sounds four beeps. (PH 12/4/95)
