TAD-245 Answering Device
(430-0766) Operation Faxback Doc. # 18903

RECORDING THE ANNOUNCEMENT

Before you set the TAD to answer calls, you must record the announcement
that callers hear when the TAD answers. Your message must not last longer
than 20 seconds. We recommend you write down your announcement before you
record it.

WARNING: Do not tell callers you are not home. Instead, say that you
"cannot come to the phone right now."

Follow these steps to record an outgoing announcement.

1. Press STOP.

2. With the handset on the cradle, press and hold OUTGOING MESSAGE
RECORD/PLAY located under the tape door.

After 2 seconds, the TAD beeps.

3. Continue to hold down OUTGOING MESSAGE RECORD/PLAY while you record
your outgoing announcement into the speaker/microphone on the front of
    the TAD.

4. Release OUTGOING MESSAGE RECORD/PLAY.

The TAD beeps once, then plays back your outgoing announcement.

NOTE: Recording is interrupted if you:

Release OUTGOING MESSAGE RECORD/PLAY before you finish recording
       your outgoing announcement.

Try to record an announcement longer than 20 seconds.

CHECKING THE ANNOUNCEMENT

You can listen to your outgoing announcement at any time.

1. Press STOP.

2. Press and release OUTGOING MESSAGE RECORD/PLAY.

    The TAD plays your announcement.

SETTING THE TAD TO ANSWER CALLS

Follow these steps to set the TAD to answer calls and record messages.

1. Press STOP.

2. Press ANSWER.

If there are no unplayed messages on the tape, the TAD beeps once and it
is ready to answer calls.

If there are unplayed messages, the TAD fast forwards the tape to the end
of the messages, then the TAD beeps once, the ANSWER indicator lights, and
the TAD is ready to answer calls.

When a call comes in, the TAD answers on the second ring if there are new
messages. If there are no new messages, the TAD answers on the fourth
ring.

NOTE: This toll-saver feature saves long-distance fees.

After the TAD answers the call, the outgoing announcement plays. At the
end of the announcement, a beep sounds. Then the TAD begins recording the
caller's message. The message can be up to 30 seconds long.

At the end of 30 seconds, the TAD beeps, stops recording, hangs up, and
resets to answer the next call. The beep is recorded on the tape.

NOTES: If the caller does not begin speaking within 7 seconds after the
beep or if the caller does not hang up within 30 seconds, the TAD
stops recording, beeps once, hangs up, and resets for the next
        incoming call.

If the TAD reaches the end of the incoming message tape while a
caller is recording a message, the TAD stops recording and beeps
        several times.

SCREENING CALLS

Your TAD lets you listen as a caller leaves a message. If you want to
speak to the caller, lift the integrated phone's handset and begin
speaking. The TAD automatically resets to answer the next call.

PLAYING MESSAGES

The red ANSWER indicator flashes after the TAD records one or more
messages.

To listen to your messages, press PLAY. The tape rewinds to the beginning
and begins playing the recorded messages. The tape plays until all
messages play or you press STOP.

SAVING MESSAGES

To save your messages after listening to them, leave the tape set at the
end of the last message and press ANSWER.

ERASING MESSAGES

After you listen to all your messages, you can erase them by pressing
REWIND/REVIEW to rewind the tape to the beginning and set the TAD to answer
calls. New incoming messages record over the old ones.

REMOTE OPERATION

You can play back your messages from any touch-tone phone or from a pulse-
dial phone using a pocket tone dialer. Also, if you forget to set the TAD
to answer calls before leaving home, you can use any remote telephone to
set it to answer calls.

NOTE: Your one-digit remote operation security code is pre-programmed
at the factory and is on the bottom of the TAD.

Answer-On

While you are away from home, you can call the TAD and set it to answer
calls if the TAD's adapter is plugged into a wall outlet, the TAD is not
set to answer calls and an outgoing announcement has been recorded.

To set the TAD to answer calls, call the TAD and let it ring until it
answers (about 1 minute).

When the TAD answers, either:

Hang up the phone (the TAD is now ready to answer calls), or

Enter your one-digit remote operation security code to play your
    messages.

Playing Messages

Follow these steps to play messages from a remote telephone.

1. Call the TAD.

The TAD answers on the second ring if there are new messages. If
there are no new messages, the TAD answers on the fourth ring.

NOTE: This toll-saver feature saves long-distance fees. If the phone
rings a third time, and there are no new messages, you can hang
           up before the TAD answers.

2. As soon as you hear the outgoing announcement, enter your one-digit
    security code.

If the security code is valid, the TAD stops the outgoing announce-
ment, beeps twice, rewinds the incoming message tape and plays the
messages. When the TAD reaches the end of your messages, it beeps
twice and pauses for 10 seconds.

You can then:

Re-enter your security code to play your messages again.

Hang up. The TAD resets to record additional incoming messages
    without erasing the old messages.

Re-enter your security code and hang up. The TAD rewinds the message
tape and resets to record over old messages.

If your local phone company does not use calling party control (CPC) to
signal that you hung up, the TAD does not rewind and record over old
messages.

NOTE: If you hang up during message playback, the TAD fast-forwards
the message tape to the end of the messages to save them and
           resets to answer calls.

SETTING THE RINGER'S VOLUME

Set RINGER on the left side of the TAD to HI if the TAD is in a noisy room
or if you want to hear the phone ring from far away. Or, you can set it
to LO. If you do not want the ringer to sound, set RINGER to OFF.

With the ringer turned off, you can still answer the phone if you hear
another phone ring on the same line, and you can still make calls.

SETTING THE DIALING MODE

Set the phone's dialing mode for the type of service you have (pulse or
touch-tone). If you are not sure which type of service you have, do this
simple test.

1. Set TONE-PULSE (located on the handset) to TONE.

2. Listen for a dial tone.

3. Press any number except 0.

If the dial tone stops, you have touchtone service. Leave TONE-PULSE set
to TONE.

If the dial tone continues, you have pulse service. Set TONE-PULSE to
PULSE.

MANUAL DIALING

To make calls using manual dialing, lift the receiver, wait for the dial
tone, and enter the number you want to call. You hear a confirmation tone
for each button you press.

STORING NUMBERS IN MEMORY

You can store up to ten telephone numbers in the phone's memory. Each
memory location holds up to 18 digits.

NOTE: Pause entries and dialing mode changes count as one digit (see
"Using Tone Services on a Pulse Line" and "Using Pause").

Follow these steps to store a telephone number in memory.

1. Lift the handset and press STORE.

2. Enter the number you want to store.

3. Press MEMORY. Then enter the memory location (0-9) where you want to
    store the phone number.

Repeat Steps 1-3 for each phone number you want to store.

NOTES: If you make a mistake while entering a number, press the switchhook
        and re-enter the number.

When making test calls to emergency numbers, remain on the line
and briefly explain to the dispatcher the reason for the call.
Perform these activities in off-peak hours, such as early morning
        or late evening.

For each number you store in memory, write an identifying name next to the
memory location on the index card under the handset. Use a pencil in case
you want to change the number later.

DIALING NUMBERS FROM MEMORY

To dial numbers stored in memory, lift the handset and press MEMORY. Then
enter the memory location (0-9) of the phone number you want to dial.

REDIALING

The redial memory holds up to 32 digits of the last number you dialed, so
it can store long-distance as well as local numbers.

To redial the last number dialed, lift the phone handset and press
REDIAL/PAUSE. The phone automatically dials the number.

USING TONE SERVICES ON A PULSE LINE

If you have pulse service, you can still use special services, such as
bank-by phone, that require tone signals.

1. Use pulse dialing to call the special service.

2. When the service answers, set TONE-PULSE to TONE.

3. Follow the normal procedure for using the special service. Any
additional numbers you dial are sent as tone signals.

Reset TONE-PULSE to PULSE after you hang up.

USING PAUSE

Pause is used with memory dialing or redialing only. In some telephone
systems, you must dial an access code (9, for example) and wait for a
second dial tone before you dial an outside number. When you manually
dial a number, or when you store a number in memory, you can insert a
pause anywhere in the dialing sequence. Simply press REDIAL/PAUSE at the
desired location.

When you redial or memory dial a number, the telephone pauses for about
2 seconds where you pressed REDIAL/PAUSE. For a longer pause, press
REDIAL/PAUSE twice, the telephone pauses for about 4 seconds.) Each pause
entry counts as one digit in memory.
