TAD-518 Dual Cassette Telephone Answering System (430-0715) Operation Faxback Doc. # 18957 Be sure you complete the procedures in "Installation" and "Preparation" before you begin using the TAD. SETTING THE TAD TO ANSWER CALLS You can set the TAD to either the ANSWER or ANNOUNCE ONLY mode. When you set ANSWER/ANN ONLY to ANSWER, the phone is set to answer calls, announce the first outgoing message, then record incoming messages. When you set ANSWER/ANN ONLY to ANN ONLY, the phone is set to answer calls, announce the second outgoing message, without recording incoming messages. Using the Answer Mode Set STOP/ON to ON. Then set ANSWER/ANN ONLY to ANSWER. The TAD is ready to answer calls and record messages. NOTES: If you have not recorded the first outgoing announcement, the TAD continuously beeps. You must record an outgoing announcement before you can set the TAD to answer calls. Many local phone companies use calling party control (CPC) to signal that the caller has hung up. Your TAD can recognize a CPC signal and disconnect the line. If the TAD records phone company messages or dial tones, your local phone company probably does not use CPC. The TAD hangs up and resets to answer the next call when the caller hangs up, the maximum message length of about 60 seconds is up, or there are more than 7 seconds of silence. If the incoming message tape reaches the end while a caller is leaving a message, the TAD beeps twice and hangs up. If the TAD answers a call after the incoming message tape is full, the TAD plays the second announcement and hangs up. If a second announcement is not recorded, the TAD plays the first outgoing announcement after ten rings and then hangs up. Using the Announcement-Only Mode You can set your TAD to the announcement-only mode so it does not record callers' messages. This is ideal for providing meeting notices and announcements. Set STOP/ON to ON. Then set ANSWER/ANN ONLY to ANN ONLY. The tape moves to the beginning of the second announcement. If there is no second announcement, it moves to the beginning of the first announcement. SETTING THE TAD TO NOT ANSWER CALLS If you do not want the TAD to answer any calls, set STOP/ON to STOP. The indicator turns off. NOTE: Even if you set STOP/ON to STOP, you can use a remote phone to set the TAD to answer calls. See "Remote Answer-On." CALL SCREENING To screen your calls, let the TAD answer all calls for you, and listen to the caller's message through the TAD's speaker. If you decide to answer the call, pick up any phone connected to the same phone line as the TAD. The TAD stops recording and resets for the next call. NOTE: If you pick up the phone just as the TAD answers, the TAD might not stop recording. If this happens, hang up the phone and then pick it up again. PLAYING MESSAGES When your TAD has messages you have not yet listened to, the indicator continuously flashes. To listen to your messages, press PLAY/REWIND/SAVE. The TAD beeps, and the indicator turns off. The incoming tape rewinds and the TAD plays the messages. To pause playback, set STOP/ON to STOP. To resume playback, set STOP/ON to ON again. To rewind the tape, press and hold PLAY/REWIND/SAVE. Release Play/REWIND/SAVE to resume playback. After you listen to all the messages, the TAD beeps twice, automatically rewinds the incoming message tape, and resets to answer calls. Unless you save the messages, new messages record over the old ones. NOTES: The only way to erase old messages without recording new ones is by remote operation. See "Using Remote Control Commands." To replay the messages, simply press PLAY/REWIND/SAVE again. SAVING MESSAGES You can save your messages after you play them. To do so, after the TAD rewinds the tape to the beginning, simply press and hold PLAY/REWIND/SAVE for about 2 seconds until the indicator turns off and the TAD beeps. The tape fast-forwards to the end of the messages and records new messages from that point. NOTE: During an AC power failure, the outgoing and incoming messages are saved. When power is restored, if the TAD had recorded incoming messages, the indicator flashes. Press PLAY/REWIND/SAVE to listen to the messages you received before the power failure. RECORDING A MEMO To record a message at the TAD, follow these steps. 1. Press MEMO/2 WAY REC/FAST-F once. 2. When the indicator lights steadily and the TAD beeps, begin recording the message. Speak in a normal voice about 12 inches from the microphone. NOTE: While recording a memo, recording does not stop after 7 seconds of silence. 3. When you finish speaking, press MEMO/2 WAY REC/FAST-F again. The TAD beeps twice. Your memo is recorded just like an incoming message and plays back along with the incoming messages. RECORDING A PHONE CONVERSATION You can record both sides of a conversation held on any phone connected to the same phone line as the TAD. NOTE: It is illegal in some states to record a conversation without the consent of all parties to the conversation, including the phone company. Check the laws in your area before using the two-way record feature. At any time during the conversation, press and hold MEMO/2 WAY REC/FAST-F for about 2 seconds. The indicator turns off, and the TAD beeps. Then recording begins. NOTE: While recording a phone conversation, recording does not stop after 7 seconds of silence. To stop recording, press MEMO/2 WAY REC/FAST-F again. The TAD beeps twice and recording stops. Your phone conversation is recorded just like an incoming message and plays back along with the incoming messages. (/all-02/14/96)
