ET-493 Cordless Electronic Telephone (430-0628) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 18969 CHARGING THE BATTERY You must charge the phone's handset battery for at least 24 hours before you use the phone. Recharge the battery when the LOW BATT indicator on the handset lights. NOTE: If charged as described below, the supplied handset battery should last for several years. When the battery loses its ability to fully recharge, take the phone to your Radio Shack store so they can arrange to have the battery replaced. Follow these steps to charge the battery. 1. Set RINGER to POWER OFF. 2. Place the handset on the cradle. The CHARGE indicator on the base lights. NOTES: If battery power is low, RINGER is set to LO or HI, and the handset is not in use, LOW BATT slowly flashes. If battery power is too low, the LOW BATT indicator does not light. The battery can recharge if RINGER is set to LO or HI, but it recharges more quickly if you set RINGER to POWER OFF. If the CHARGE indicator does not light when you place the handset on the cradle, be sure the battery and AC adapter are correctly and securely connected. Also, check the charging contacts on the handset and base. If the contacts are dirty or tarnished, clean them with a pencil eraser. This product contains a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery. At the end of the battery's useful life, it must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. The first time you use the phone, you might hear an error tone. This occurs if the access-protection code is not set. (You do not hear the error tone if RINGER is set to POWER OFF.) If you hear the error tone, lift the handset, set RINGER to LO or HI, and return the handset to the cradle to reset the access- protection code. About once a month, fully discharge the battery. Otherwise, the battery loses its ability to fully recharge and you will have to replace it more often. To fully discharge the battery, keep the handset off the cradle until the LOW BATT indicator lights. Then return the handset to the cradle and fully recharge the battery. SETTING THE DIALING MODE Set PULSE-TONE for the type of service you have. If you are not sure which type of service you have, do the following. 1. Set RINGER to LO or HI. 2. SET PULSE-TONE to TONE. 3. Lift the handset and listen for a dial tone. 4. Press any number other than 0. If the dial tone stops, you have touchtone service. If the dial tone continues, you have pulse service. Set PULSE-TONE to PULSE. SETTING THE RINGER SWITCH The Ringer switch controls the volume for the ringer, the pager and the buttonpress confirmation tones. Set RINGER to LO or HI for a low or high volume level. Set RINGER to POWER OFF to turn off the handset. If you set RINGER to POWER OFF, you can still answer calls if you hear the ringer of another phone on the same phone line. Lift the handset from the cradle, set RINGER to LO or HI, and return the handset to the cradle. Then lift the handset to answer the call. NOTE: During normal operation, keep RINGER set to LO or HI.
