ET-330 Cordless Electronic Telephone System (430-0267) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 19216 CHECKLIST For dependable operation, the steps below must be performed in sequence. This checklist summarizes these steps in their proper order. A detailed description of each step appears below. 1. Install the Base unit (see Faxback Doc. # 19212, Base Unit). Connect the power cord to an AC outlet. Connect the modular plug to a modular jack. 2. Charge the Handset (see Faxback Doc.# 19214, Handset). Set the READY/OFF switch to OFF. Place the Handset on the Base Unit; the green charging indicator will light. Allow the Handset to charge completely (40-48 hours). 3. Enter the Security Code (see "Entering the Security Code," below). Press the CODE ENTER button on the Base Unit; you will hear a short tone from the Handset. Enter a four-digit code on the Handset keypad (using 0-9); you will hear another short tone to indicate the number has been stored. 4. Install Base Unit Backup Battery (see "Installing the Base Unit Backup Battery," below). Put a 9-volt battery in the battery compartment on the bottom of the Base Unit. Observe correct polarity (+ and -), as marked in the compartment. 5. See "Operation," Faxback Doc. # 19215. INSTALLING THE BASE UNIT The ET-330 comes with a modular plug installed on the end of its telephone cable. You can connect it directly to the phone lines through a standard modular jack (used throughout the USA). 1. Disconnect your regular telephone from the wall jack and connect the ET-330 modular plug in its place. 2. Connect the AC power cord to a standard AC outlet. Always use a 3-wire grounded outlet and, if necessary, a 3-wire extension cord. 3. If you wish to use the intercom feature of the ET-330, plug a regular telephone into the modular jack on the back of the ET-330 Base Unit. A telephone connected here may be used normally or as an intercom with the ET-330 Handset. Installation Hints Locate the Base Unit as high as possible for increased range. Unravel the power cord completely for best results. (It acts as an antenna.) Using an extension cord will increase the range. You must use a 3-wire extension cord. To avoid tripping over wires and damaging to the unit, position the base so that the wires are not in the way of normal activities. Fully extend the Base Unit antenna. Check to see that the POWER indicator is on. CHARGING THE HANDSET The Handset has a built-in rechargeable battery pack. As supplied, this battery pack is usually fully discharged. Before use, the Handset battery pack should be charged for 40 to 48 hours. To charge the Handset battery pack, the Base Unit must be installed as described above. Charging on Base Unit 1. Place the Handset in its cradle on the Base Unit. 2. The green CHARGING indicator will light when the Handset is charging properly. NOTE: Charging will be hindered if the charging contacts become dirty or tarnished; clean them occasionally with a pencil eraser. Charging with an External Charger If the Handset is kept separate from the Base Unit, or if you have more than one Handset, you may use an external AC adapter/charger (Radio Shack Cat. No. 273-1455). Connect the adapter/charger to the DC 9V jack on the side of the Handset; then plug it into a standard AC outlet. Extra Handsets are available by special order. Charging Hints Once the battery pack has been fully charged, you should recharge the Handset about two hours for every one hour it is used. The Handset uses a small amount of power, even when you are not talking on the ET-330. A full charge will last 24 to 36 hours with the READY/OFF switch set to READY; the charge will last several days with the switch in the OFF position. It is best to have the Handset on charge, whenever possible. The charging rate is automatically reduced as the batteries approach a full charge. They will not be harmed by leaving the Handset on charge. INSTALLING THE BASE UNIT BACKUP BATTERY Important Note: Be sure to charge the Handset and enter the security code "before" installing the battery. Your ET-330 requires one 9-volt battery to hold the security code and telephone numbers stored in the Base Unit memory, when there is an AC power failure or the Base Unit is temporarily unplugged. We recommend an extra-life battery, such as our 23-583, for this purpose. It is better suited to the electrical characteristics of this unit than an alkaline battery. To Install the Battery 1. Open the battery compartment on the bottom of the Base Unit, by pressing the tab in the direction of the arrow. 2. Observing Polarity (+ and -) as shown, place the battery in the compartment, bottom end first; then tilt it forward into position. 3. Replace the battery compartment door. Backup Battery Hints Normal battery life is about one year (unless you have an extended AC power failure or leave the Base Unit unplugged). To prevent loss of memory numbers, make sure the Base Unit is plugged in when you replace the battery. TESTING THE BATTERIES Base Unit To check the backup battery in the Base Unit, press the BATT TEST button on the back of the unit. If the POWER/TEST indicator flashes, it is time to replace the battery. Use an extra-life battery, such as Radio Shack's 23-583. Note: Never leave a weak or "dead" battery in this unit. Even a "leak-proof" battery can leak damaging chemicals. Handset The built-in battery pack in the Handset is automatically tested. When it needs recharging, the BATT LOW indicator will light. Be sure to recharge the battery pack before it becomes completely discharged. NOTE: If the battery pack is allowed to discharge completely, there might not be enough power to light the BATT LOW indicator. In this case, the battery pack must be charged for 40 to 48 hours. MOUNTING THE BELT CLIP The Handset may be attached to your belt or other convenient locations. Use the screws supplied to mount the clip. (CS 12/19/95)
