TAD-266 Telephone Answering System (430-0735) Installation Faxback Doc. # 19228 READ THIS BEFORE INSTALLATION We have designed your answering system to conform to federal regulations, and you can connect it to most telephone lines. However, each device you connect to the phone line draws power from the phone line. We refer to this power draw as the device's ringer equivalence number, or REN. It is marked on the bottom of the TAD. If you are using more than one device on the line, add up all the RENs. If the total is more than five, your phones might not ring and your TAD might not answer. In rural areas, a total REN of three might impair ringer operation. If ringer operation is impaired, remove a device from the telephone line. INSTALLATION You can install the TAD on a desk, table, or shelf or mount it on a wall. Select a location that is near a modular telephone jack and an AC outlet, and away from normal activities. If your telephone wiring does not have a modular phone jack, you can update the wiring yourself. Radio Shack stores sell the necessary jacks and adapters to convert older wiring methods to modular wiring. Or, you can have the telephone company update your telephone wiring. The telephone company charges to install the necessary jack. The USOC number of the jack to be installed is RJ11C for a baseboard jack, or RJ11W for a wall jack. DESK-TOP CONNECTION To use your answering system on a desk, table, or shelf, plug its modular cord into a modular phone jack. MOUNTING DIRECTLY ON A WALL To mount the TAD directly on a wall, you need two screws (not included) with heads that fit into the keyhole slots on the back of the supplied wall-mount bracket. Follow these steps to mount the system directly on a wall. 1. Drill two holes 3 15/16 inches apart, then thread the screws into the wall letting the heads extend about 1/6 inch from the wall. 2. Hook the supplied wall-mount bracket into the slots at the top of the TAD, then push in the bottom of the bracket to snap it into place. 3. Route the modular telephone cord through the channel on the bottom of the wall-mount bracket. 4. Plug the end of the attached modular telephone cord into a modular phone jack. NOTE: To prevent the excess telephone cord from getting in the way of normal activities, wrap it around the wall-mount bracket. 5. Remove the handset holder from just below the charging contacts. Turn it so its tab faces up, then reinsert it so you can hang the handset on it. 6. Place the wall-mount bracket's keyhole slots over the screw heads and press down on the TAD to secure it. MOUNTING ON A WALL PLATE Follow these steps to mount the TAD/phone base on a wall plate. 1. Hook the supplied wall-mount bracket into the slots at the top of the TAD, then push in the bottom of the bracket to snap it into place. 2. Plug the end of the attached modular phone cord into the modular wall jack. NOTE: To prevent the excess telephone cord from getting in the way of normal activities, wrap it around the wall-mount bracket. 3. Remove the handset holder just below the charging contracts. Turn it so its tab faces up, then reinsert it so you can hang the handset on it. 4. Place the wall-mount bracket's keyhole slots over the wall plate's studs, and press the TAD down to secure it. CONNECTING TO POWER Follow these steps to connect the supplied AC adapter to your TAD and to power. CAUTION: Use only the supplied adapter with the TAD. Using any other type of adapter might damage the TAD. 1. Insert the adapter plug into the TAD's DC 9V jack. 2. Route the AC adapter's cable through the TAD's strain-relief slot. 3. Plug the other end of the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet. The POWER indicator lights and a tone briefly sounds when power is first connected. NOTE: The POWER indicator remains lit as long as the TAD/phone is connected to AC power. (JC 1/2/96)
