TAD-266 Telephone Answering System (430-0735) Operation Faxback Doc. # 19229 USING THE CORDLESS PHONE Making/Answering a Call If the handset is on the cradle, lift it to make or answer a call. If the handset is away from the cradle, press TALK/HANG UP. The TALK/HANG UP indicator lights when the phone is in use. To disconnect a call, place the handset on the cradle or press TALK/HANG UP. The TALK/HANG UP indicator turns off. Using Redial To quickly redial the last number dialed, simply press REDIAL once you hear a dial tone. The redial memory holds up to 16 digits, so you can dial long-distance as well as local numbers. Using Flash Pressing FLASH sends the electronic equivalent of a switchhook signal. Use FLASH to perform the switchhook operation for special phone service, such as call waiting. If you have call waiting, press FLASH to answer a second call without disconnecting the current call. Press FLASH again to return to the first call. NOTES: The redial memory does not store the FLASH entry or the digits you press before the FLASH entry. If you do not have any special phone services, pressing FLASH might disconnect the current call. Using Tone Services on a Pulse Line Some special phone services, such as bank-by-phone, require tone signals. If you have pulse service, you can still use these special tone services. Follow these steps: 1. With MODE TONE-PULSE set to PULSE, dial the service's main number. 2. When the service answers, simply press TONE/# on the handset, then dial the additional numbers. The phone sends these numbers as tone signals. 3. When you complete the call, place the handset on the cradle or press TALK/HANG UP to disconnect the call. Confirmation and Error Tones When you press a button, the phone sounds a brief tone to indicate that it accepted the command. If three error tones sound, then you pressed a button in error, you are out of range, the battery is low or there is too much interference. Move the handset closer to the base or recharge the battery and try again. If you experience continued interference on your cordless phone, you can exchange the TAD (within 30 days of the purchase date) for one that uses another frequency. Just bring your TAD, along with the original sales slip (as proof of purchase), to your local Radio Shack store. NOTE: Your cordless phone is available with one of the following channels and corresponding operating frequencies for base and handset transmitting and receiving. __________________________________________________________________________ Channel Base Base Handset Handset Transmit Receive Transmit Receive __________________________________________________________________________ I 46.710 MHz 49.770 MHz 49.770 MHz 49.710 MHz __________________________________________________________________________ M 46.870 MHz 49.930 MHz 49.930 MHz 46.870 MHz __________________________________________________________________________ O 46.970 MHz 49.970 MHz 49.970 MHz 46.970 MHz __________________________________________________________________________ USING THE TAD Recording Your Outgoing Message Before you can set the TAD to answer calls, you must record the outgoing message (OGM) that the caller hears when the TAD answers a call. The maximum outgoing message time is 20 seconds. After 20 seconds, a beep sounds and recording stops. In your message, we suggest you ask for the caller's name, phone number, and a message. NOTE: To help protect your home or office from theft, do not tell callers that you are away. Instead, simply say that you cannot answer the phone. Follow these steps to record the outgoing announcement. NOTE: The handset must be on the base before you record the outgoing message. 1. If the ANSWER/MSG PRESENT indicator is not turned off, press STOP/SAVE. 2. Press and hold down OGM REC/PLAY. 3. When a beep sounds, record your message in a normal voice, about 12 to 15 inches from the TAD's built in microphone. 4. After you finish recording, release OGM REC/PLAY. A beep sounds and the TAD replays the outgoing message so you can check it. 5. Adjust VOLUME MIN-MAX to a comfortable listening level. To change the outgoing message, repeat Steps 2 through 5. The new outgoing message replaces the old one. To hear the outgoing message, press and release OGM REC/PLAY when the TAD is stopped and not set to ANSWER. The TAD plays the outgoing message. Having the TAD Answer Calls To set the TAD to answer calls, press ANSWER until the TAD beeps and the ANSWER/MSG PRESENT indicator lights. To set the TAD to not answer calls, press ANSWER until the ANSWER/MSG PRESENT indicator turns off, or press STOP/SAVE. When the TAD answers, it plays the outgoing message and sounds a beep. Then the ANSWER/MSG PRESENT indicator flashes and the TAD starts recording the message (up to 30 seconds). When the caller hangs up, the TAD resets for the next call. NOTES: If there are newly recorded messages, the TAD answers on the second ring. If there are no newly recorded messages, the TAD answers on the fourth ring. If the message is longer than 30 seconds or if the caller is silent for more than 7 seconds, the TAD automatically stops recording, disconnects the call, and resets for the next call. If the cassette tape is full, no more messages can be recorded. The TAD answers the call, sounds four beeps, then hangs up and resets to answer the next call. Screening Calls at the Base To screen incoming calls, let the TAD answer the call. When the caller starts speaking, you can either let the TAD record the message or you can lift the handset or press TALK/HANG UP to speak to the caller. When you answer the call, the TAD automatically stops recording and resets to answer the next call. Screening Calls with the Handset You can screen your incoming calls through the handset. Let the handset ring until the TAD answers, then press LISTEN to hear the caller's message. To speak to the caller, press TALK/HANG UP. The TAD stops recording and resets for the next call. Listening To/Saving messages at the Base When new messages are recorded, the ANSEWER/MSG PRESENT indicator flashes until you play back the recorded messages. To listen to the recorded messages, press PLAY/FAST-F. The tape rewinds and the messages play. Adjust VOLUME MIN-MAX to a comfortable listening level. After the last message plays, the TAD stops and waits 20 seconds before it rewinds the tape. To save the messages, press STOP/SAVE within 20 seconds. Otherwise, the TAD rewinds the tape and resets to answer calls. New calls record over the old ones. If you saved your messages by pressing STOP/SAVE, press ANSWER to reset the TAD to answer calls. Listening to Messages with the Handset To play back messages using the handset, with the TALK/HANG UP indicator off, press PLAY once to start playback, a second time to stop it, and a third time to rewind the tape and replay from the beginning. After you play all the messages, the TAD rewinds the tape and resets to answer calls. Using STOP, FAST-F and REWIND Press STOP/SAVE to stop the tape during playback. Press PLAY/FAST-F to resume normal play. While the tape is stopped, press REWIND to quickly rewind the tape. Press and hold down PLAY/FAST-F to move quickly past messages during playback. Release the button to resume normal playback. Remote Playback To operate the TAD from a remote location: 1. Dial your phone number. The outgoing message plays. NOTE: If the TAD does not answer till after ten rings, it is not set to answer calls. 2. Press and hold the number of your remote operation security code for at least two seconds while the OGM plays. The TAD stops playing the OGM, beeps twice, rewinds the tape, and plays back any recorded incoming messages. 3. After it plays back all the incoming messages, the TAD sounds two beeps. To play back the incoming messages again, enter the remote operation security code (marked on the back of the unit) within 8 seconds after the two beeps. NOTE: If not entered within 8 seconds, the TAD will hang up. 4. To end the remote operation, hang up the phone. The TAD automatically saves all messages and resets to answer calls. (JC/ir-03/04/96)
