TAD-266 Telephone Answering System (430-0735) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 19230 PREPARING THE HANDSET Installing the Antenna Before using the telephone, you must install the antenna by screwing it into the socket on top of the handset. For the best reception, fully extend the antenna on the base and position it vertically. Connecting the Battery The TAD-266 comes with the battery installed. Simply follow these steps to connect the battery, then charge it as described under "Charging the Battery." (BELOW) 1. Press down and slide off the handset's battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow. 2. Insert the battery connector's plug into the jack inside the compartment. CAUTION: The plug fits only one way. Insert it with the tab up. 3. Replace the cover and return the handset to the cradle. Charging the Battery You must charge the handset's battery for at least 14 hours before you use the phone for the first time, or when you install a new battery. After the initial charge, recharge the battery when the LOW BATT indicator on the handset lights. To charge the battery, simply place the handset on the cradle. The red CHARGE indicator on the base lights. NOTES: If the CHARGE indicator does not light when you place the handset on the cradle, be sure the battery and AC adapter are correctly and securely connected. Also, check the charging contacts on the handset and base. If the contacts are dirty or tarnished, clean them with a pencil eraser. The first time you use the phone, or when the battery gets low, you might hear an error tone. If you hear the tone, return the handset to the cradle to reset the access-protection code or recharge the battery. About once a month, fully discharge the battery. Otherwise, the battery loses its ability to fully recharge. To fully discharge the battery, keep the handset off the cradle until the LOW BATT indicator lights. Then return the handset to the cradle and fully recharge the battery. NOTE: Your phone uses a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery. At the end of the battery's useful life, it must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that might be available are: municipal curbside collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail-back programs. Replacing the Battery If the battery will not charge, you need to replace it. CAUTIONS: Use only a replacement battery of the required type, available through your local Radio Shack store. Do not dispose of the battery in fire because it can explode. Do not open or mutilate the battery. The battery contents are toxic and corrosive. PREPARING THE TAD Installing the Cassette Tape Your answering system is supplied with an MC-60 microcassette tape (30 minutes recording time per side). You can buy different length or replacement tapes at your local Radio Shack store. Follow these steps to install the tape. 1. Take up an slack in the cassette tape by rotating the tape reel with a pencil. 2. Lift the cassette compartment door and install the cassette with its full reel on the right and its open edge toward the front of the TAD. 3. Close the compartment door. NOTES: We recommend you not use MC-90 microcassette tape. This type of tape is very thin and breaks easily. Replace the tape once a year or more often if it is used frequently. Setting the Dialing Mode Set MODE TONE-PULSE for your type of service (pulse or tone). If you're not sure which type you have, do this simple test. 1. Lift the handset and listen for a dial tone. 2. Set MODE TONE-PULSE to TONE. 3. Press any number other than 0. If the dial tone stops, you have touch-tone service. If the dial tone continues, you have pulse service. If you have pulse service, set MODE TONE-PULSE to PULSE. NOTES: If you set MODE TONE-PULSE to PULSE, there might be a delay after you enter the number while the telephone finishes dialing the number. If you have pulse service and want to use a service that requires tone signals, see "Using Tone Services on a Pulse Line." (see Faxback Doc. # 19229, Operations). (JC 1/2/96)
