ET-181 Two-Line Desk Telephone (430-0470) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 19478 READ THIS BEFORE INSTALLATION We have designed your telephone to conform to federal regulations, and you can connect it to most telephone lines. However, each device that you connect to the phone line draws power from the phone line. We refer to this power draw as the device's ringer equivalence number, or REN. The REN is marked on the bottom of the phone. If you are using more than one phone or other device on the line, add up all the RENs. If the total is more than five, your phones might not ring. In rural areas, a total REN of three might impair ringer operation. NOTE: You must not connect the phone to any of the following: Coin-operated systems. Party-line systems. Most electronic key phone systems. PREPARATION Connecting to Phone Lines To connect the telephone to the phone lines, plug one end of the supplied two-line telephone cord into the jack on the back of the phone. Then plug the cord's other end into a two-line telephone jack (RJ14). To connect the phone to two single-line jacks, use a two-line coupler (such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 279-401) between the phone and the jacks. If you have only one phone line, you can order an additional line from your local phone company. Connecting the Handset Cord Plug one end of the supplied coiled handset cord into the jack on the handset. Then plug the cord's other end into the jack on the left side of the phone's base. Setting the Dialing Mode Set TONE/PULSE for the type of service you have. If you are not sure which type you have, follow these steps. 1. Set TONE/PULSE to TONE. 2. Lift the handset, press LINE 1, and listen for a dial tone. 3. Press any number key other than 0. If the dial tone stops, you have touch-tone service. If the dial tone continues, you have pulse service. 4. For Line 2, press LINE 2 and repeat Step 3. If you have tone service for one line and pulse service for the other, you must change the TONE/PULSE switch setting each time you change the line to dial out. The setting does not matter when you answer a call.
