ET-146 Telephone (430-0642) Installation Faxback Doc. # 19490 SELECTING A LOCATION You can place the phone on a flat surface such as a desk, shelf, or table, mount it on a wall plate, or mount it directly on the wall. Select a location where the phone is near a phone jack and out of the way of normal activities. INSTALLING THE PHONE To use both of the ET-146's lines, you must connect it to two separate telephone lines. Each of these lines must have its own phone number. If you do not have two telephone lines, contact your phone company to get a second line. NOTE: You can connect the phone to only one telephone line, but only Line 1 will work. Your phone connects directly to a two-line modular phone jack. If your telephone wiring does not have a two-line modular phone jack (or if only Line 1 on the ET-146 works after you install it), you can: Update the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapters available at your local Radio Shack store, or have the phone company update the wiring for you. NOTE: The phone company charges to install the necessary jack. The USOC number of the jack to be installed is RJ14C for a baseboard jack or RJ14W for a wall-plate jack. Connect your phone to two one-line modular phone jacks, using a two-line coupler (Radio Shack Cat. No. 279-401). Installing/Removing the Stand You must attach the supplied stand to the phone differently, depending on how you install the phone. If you are installing the phone on a desk, shelf, or table: On the bottom of the phone, insert the tabs on the narrow end of the supplied stand into both upper slots near the center of the phone so the arrow on the stand points to the DESK TOP arrow on the bottom of the phone. Then snap the stand into place. If you are installing the phone on a wall plate or directly on the wall: On the bottom of the phone, insert the tabs on the narrow end of the stand into both lower slots near the center of the phone so the arrow on the stand points to the WALL MOUNT arrow on the bottom of the phone. Then snap the stand into place. To remove the stand from the phone, while pressing and holding in both spring tabs, gently pull up the wide end of the stand and lift it off. On a Desk Top Follow these steps to install the phone on a desk, shelf, or table. 1. Plug one end of the supplied long modular cord into the TEL. LINE jack on the back of the phone. 2. Plug the other end of the modular cord into a modular phone jack. 3. Place the phone on the desk, shelf, or table. On a Wall Plate NOTES: You need a short modular cord such as Cat. No. 279-390 (not supplied) to mount the phone on a standard wall plate. A selection of wall plates is available at your local Radio Shack store. Follow these steps to mount the phone on a standard wall plate. 1. Plug one end of the short modular cord into the TEL. LINE jack on the back of the phone. Then route the cord through the strain relief slot on the bottom of the phone. 2. Feed any excess modular cord into the cavity on the bottom of the phone. 3. Plug the other end of the modular cord into the wall plate's modular phone line jack. 4. Align the keyhole slots on the bottom of the phone and the stand with the mounting studs on the wall plate, then carefully push the phone onto the studs and slide it down. 5. Pull up on the handset holder to remove it, then turn it 180 (degrees) and reinsert it to secure the handset when you hang it up. Directly on the Wall To install the phone directly on the wall, you need two screws (not supplied) with heads that fit into the keyhole slots on the bottom of the phone and the stand. 1. Mark the positions for both screw holes 3 1/4 inches apart. 2. In both marked locations, drill a hole slightly smaller than the screws. CAUTION: Be careful not to drill into any objects behind the wall. 3. Insert the screws into the wall, letting each head extend 1/8 inch from the wall. 4. Plug one end of the supplied long modular cord into the TEL. LINE jack on the back of the phone. Then route the cord through the strain relief slot on the bottom of the phone. 5. Remove the stand, route the cord through the slots on the stand, then re-connect the stand to the phone (see "Installing/Removing the Stand"), see above. 6. Align the keyhole slots on the back of the phone and the stand with the screw heads in the wall, then carefully push the phone onto the screw heads and slide it down. 7. Plug the other end of the modular cord into a modular phone line jack. 8. Pull up on the handset holder to remove it, then turn it 180 (degrees) and reinsert it to secure the handset when you hang it up. CONNECTING THE HANDSET 1. Plug one end of the supplied coiled cord into the modular jack on the handset. 2. Plug the other end of the coiled cord into the handset jack on the left side of the phone. To hang up the phone, place the handset on the cradle. NOTE: If the supplied coiled cord is not long enough, you can get longer coiled handset cords at your local Radio Shack store. (EB 1/12/96)
