ET-442 Cordless Electronic Telephone (430-0574) Installation Faxback Doc. # 19637 READ THIS BEFORE INSTALLATION We have designed your telephone to conform to federal regulations, and you can connect it to most telephone lines. However, each device that you connect to the phone line draws power from the phone line. This power draw is the device's ringer equivalence number, or REN. The REN is shown on the bottom of your phone. If you are using more that one phone or other device on the line, add up all the RENs. If the total is more than five, your phones might not ring. In rural areas, a total REN of three might impair ringer operation. FCC STATEMENT This telephone complies with Part 68 of FCC Rules. You must, upon request, provide the FCC registration number and the REN to your phone company. Both numbers are on the bottom of you phone. NOTE: Your phone operates on standard radio frequencies, as allocated by the FCC. It is possible for other radio units operating nearby on similar frequencies to unintentionally intercept your conversation or cause interference. This possible lack of privacy can occur with any cordless phone. NOTE: You must not connect your phone to any of the following: Coin-operated systems Party-line systems Most electronic key phone systems For your important records, we urge you to record your phone's serial numbers in the space below. The serial numbers are on the top of the handset and on the bottom panel of the base. SELECTING A LOCATION Select a location that is all of the following: Near an AC outlet Near a telephone jack Out of the way of normal activities Away from electrical machinery, electrical appliances, and metal walls or filing cabinets Away from wireless intercoms, alarms, and room monitors The base's location affects the telephone's range. If you have a choice of several locations, try each to see which location gives the best performance. INSTALLING THE BASE To install the base, do the following: 1. Plug one end of the supplied modular cord into the TEL LINE jack on the back of the base. 2. Plug the cord's other end into a modular phone line jack. 3. Insert the supplied AC adapter's barrel plug into the AC IN jack on the back of the base. 4. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. If the phone jack is not a modular jack, you must update the wiring. You can convert the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapters available at your local Radio Shack store. Or, you can let the phone company update the wiring. NOTE: The telephone company will charge you for the installation of the necessary jack. The phone company will ask for the USOC number of the jack to be installed. This number is RJ11C. INSTALLING THE BATTERY Follow these steps to install the supplied battery into the handset. NOTE: The supplied battery should last for several years. When the battery does not fully recharge, order a new one from your local Radio Shack store. 1. Loosen the screw on the battery compartment and slide it in the direction of the arrow. 2. Attach the battery's connector to the connector inside the battery compartment. Then place the battery inside the compartment. 3. Replace the battery compartment cover and tighten the screw. (EB 2/13/96)
