ET-274 Slim Phone (430-0594) Installation Faxback Doc. # 19646 READ THIS BEFORE INSTALLATION We have designed your phone to conform to federal regulations and you can connect it to most phone lines. However, each phone that you connect to the telephone line draws power from the line. The phone's ringer equivalence number (REN), shown on the bottom of your phone, represents this power draw. If you use more than one phone or other device on the line, add up all the RENs. If the total is more than five, your phones might not ring. In rural areas, a total REN of three might impair ringer operation. Check with your local telephone company to be sure. FCC STATEMENT Your telephone complies with Part 68 of FCC Rules. At the telephone company's request, you must provide the phone's FCC registration number and REN. These numbers are located on the bottom of the telephone. NOTE: You must not connect your telephone to: Coin-operated systems Party-line systems Most electronic key systems This telephone has been tested and found to comply with all applicable UL standards. CONNECTING THE HANDSET CORD Plug one end of the supplied coiled cord into the phone handset's jack. Then plug the other end into the jack on the side of the phone. Radio Shack stores sell longer coiled handset cords that are especially useful if you mount the telephone on a wall. INSTALLING THE PHONE You can use your phone as a desk phone, or mount it either directly to the wall or on a wall plate. Select a location that is near a modular telephone jack. NOTES: If you do not have a modular phone jack, you can either update the wiring yourself or have the phone company update it for you. Radio Shack stores sell the jacks and adapters necessary to convert from older wiring methods to modular wiring. The telephone company can charge you for the installation of necessary jacks. The telephone company will ask you for the USOC number of the jack to be installed. The number is RJK11C (or RJK11W for a wall jack). Desk Phone Installation To use your phone as a desk phone: 1. Place the phone on a desk, table, or shelf. 2. Plug one end of the supplied telephone cord into your phone's TEL LINK jack. Then plug the other end into a modular phone jack. Direct Wall Mounting You need two screws (not supplied) that fit the phone's keyhole slots to mount the phone directly on a wall. Follow these steps: 1. Drill two holes in the wall, one above the other and 3 15/16 inches (100 mm) apart. Thread the screws into the holes until the heads extend about 1/8 inch (3mm) from the wall. 2. Plug one end of the supplied modular phone cord into the phone's TEL LINE jack. Route the modular cord through the strain relief slot on the bottom of the phone. 3. Align the phone's keyhole slots with the screw heads and slide the phone down. Wall Plate Mounting You need a short modular cord, such as Cat. No. 279-390, to mount your phone on a wall plate. Follow these steps: 1. Plug a short modular cord (not supplied) into the phone's TEL LINE jack. Then plug the other end of the cord into the wall plate's modular phone jack. 2. Align the phone's keyhole slots with the wall plate studs and slide the phone down. Route the modular cord through the strain relief slot on the bottom of the phone so the cord ends up about midway down the bottom of the phone. (EB 2/13/96)
