ET-912 Speakerphone with Caller ID (430-0692) Installation Faxback Doc. # 31559 IMPORTANT: After you select a location for the phone (see "Selecting a Location"), you must install the phone in the following order before you use it for the first time. 1. Connect the base to power (see "Connecting to Power"). 2. Attach the battery to the phone (see "Attaching the Battery"). 3. Charge the phone's battery (see "Charging the Battery"). 4. Connect the phone to the phone lines (see "Connecting the Base to the Phone Lines"). 5. Mount the phone (see "Mounting the Phone"). SELECTING A LOCATION Select a location for the phone that is: Near an AC outlet Near a modular phone line jack Out of the way of normal activities Away from electrical machinery, electrical appliances, and metal walls or filing cabinets Away from wireless intercoms, alarms, and room monitors Away from other cordless phones The base's location affects the phone's range. If you have a choice of several locations, try each to see which provides the best performance. CONNECTING TO POWER To connect the phone's base to power, plug the AC adapter's plug into a standard AC outlet. The POWER indicator on the base lights. NOTES: If the AC adapter is unplugged from the AC outlet or the base, or the AC outlet loses power, the handset beeps intermittently until power is restored to the base. If the base loses AC power and the handset is away from the base, return the handset to the cradle after AC power is restored to reset the security access-protection code. ATTACHING THE BATTERY Your phone comes with a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery. You must attach the battery to the handset and charge it for about 24 hours before you use the phone for the first time. To attach the battery to the handset, simply slide the battery onto the handset until it clicks. CHARGING THE BATTERY Before you connect the phone to the phone line and use the phone for the first time, you must charge the battery for about 24 hours. You can recharge the battery at any time, but you must be sure to recharge it when any of the following occur: The CHARGE indicator on the base blinks. The phone beeps repeatedly when you press LINE 1, LINE 2, or CH/INTCM on the handset. The handset does not beep and no information appears on the display when you press any key. The battery symbol on the handset's display flashes. To charge or recharge the battery, place the handset on the cradle. The CHARGE indicator on the base lights. NOTES: Each time you place the handset on the cradle, the system's security access-protection code automatically resets. This prevents other cordless phones from using your telephone line when the handset is off the cradle. If the CHARGE indicator on the base does not stay lit when you place the handset on the cradle, be sure the AC adapter is properly connected. Also, check the charging contacts on the handset and base. If the contacts are dirty or tarnished, clean them with a pencil eraser. A full charge lasts about 24 hours if you leave the handset off the base and do not make any calls. About once a month, fully discharge the battery. Otherwise, the battery loses its ability to fully recharge. To fully discharge the battery, keep the handset off the cradle until the battery symbol on the display starts to flash. Then return the handset to the cradle and fully recharge the battery. When the battery cannot fully recharge, replace it with a new one. For the best performance, you should replace the supplied battery about once a year - more often if it is used heavily. See "Care and Maintenance", Faxback Doc. # 31558. CONNECTING THE BASE TO THE PHONE LINES To use the phone's two-line feature, you must connect the phone to two separate telephone lines. Each of these lines must have its own phone number. If you do not have two telephone lines, contact your phone company to get a second line. NOTE: You can connect the phone to only one telephone line, but only Line 1 will work. Your phone connects directly to either a two-line modular phone jack or two one-line modular phone jacks. If your phone line jack(s) are not modular jacks, you must update the wiring. You can convert the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapters available at your local RadioShack store. Or, you can let the phone company update the wiring for you. NOTES: The phone company will charge you for the installation of the necessary jacks. The USOC number of the jack to be installed is RJ11C (for a one-line phone jack) or RJ14C (for a two-line phone jack). Your phone comes with two phone line cords. If you are connecting the phone to a two-line modular jack, you must use the cord with clear plugs on each end to connect the phone to the jack. If you are connecting the phone to one-line modular jacks, also use the cord with black plugs on each end. CONNECTING TO A TWO-LINE PHONE JACK 1. Plug one end of the supplied phone line cord with the clear plugs into L1 OR L1/L2 on the back of the base. 2. Plug the other end of the cord into the phone line jack. CONNECTING TO TWO ONE-LINE PHONE JACKS 1. Plug one end of either supplied phone line cord into L1 OR L1/L2 on the back of the base. 2. Plug the other end of the cord into the phone line jack for Line 1. 3. Plug one end of the other supplied phone line cord into L2 on the back of the base. 4. Plug the other end of the cord into the phone line jack for Line 2. MOUNTING THE PHONE Installing/Removing the Stand If you are mounting the phone on a wall plate or directly on a wall, you must attach the supplied stand to the phone. On the bottom of the phone's base, insert the tabs on the wide end of the stand into both slots at the thick end of the phone. Then snap the stand into place. NOTE: To remove the stand from the phone, while pressing and holding in both spring tabs, gently pull up the wide end of the stand and lift it off. On the Wall Plate Follow these steps to mount the phone on a standard wall plate. 1. Feed any excess modular cord into the cavity inside the stand. 2. Align the keyhole slots on the bottom of the stand with the mounting studs on the wall plate, then carefully push the base onto the studs and slide it down. Directly on a Wall Follow these steps to mount the phone directly on a wall. 1. Mark the location of the mounting holes using the supplied template. 2. In each marked location, drill a hole slightly smaller than the supplied screws. CAUTION: Be careful not to drill into any objects behind the wall. 3. If the wall is sturdy, thread a screw into each hole, letting the head extend 1/8 inch from the wall (about the width of two stacked pennies). If the wall is not sturdy enough, insert both of the supplied mounting sleeves into the holes before threading a screw into each hole. 4. Feed any excess modular cord into the cavity inside the stand. 5. Align the keyhole slots on the bottom of the stand with the screw heads in the wall, then carefully push the base onto the screws and slide it down. ADJUSTING THE BASE'S ANTENNA For the best reception, position the base's antenna vertically. (RMF/EB/all-04/01/96)
