ET-912 Speakerphone with Caller ID (430-0692) Operation - Part 1 Faxback Doc. # 31560 MAKING A CALL WARNING: To protect your hearing, before making a call, press and hold down "DOWN" on the side of the handset for a few seconds to adjust the handset's volume to its minimum position, then repeatedly press UP and DOWN to adjust the volume to a comfortable level. You can use either of the following methods to make a call. Pick up the handset and press LINE 1 or LINE 2 on the handset. When you hear the dial tone, dial the number. NOTE: Before you get a dial tone, there might be a slight delay while the ET-912 searches through its channels to find the clearest one. Pick up the handset and dial the number, then press LINE 1 or LINE 2 to select the line. The number appears on the display as you dial it, and you hear a tone each time you press a button. The line indicator for the line you select appears on the handset and flashes on the base. NOTES: If you make a call by dialing the phone number first, you can change the displayed number before you select a line and dial it. When you complete the call, press OFF on the handset or hang up the handset. The number disappears from the display. Although you cannot make a call using the base, you can answer calls from the base. See "Using the Base". RECEIVING A CALL When you receive a call on a line, the handset rings if it is off the base (and the base also rings if you set RINGER for that line to ON), and the line indicator for that line flashes on the handset display and on the base. You can answer the call using the handset or the base. NOTE: If you press OFF on the handset while the phone is ringing, both the handset's and the base's ringer turns off for that call only. For more information, see "Turning the Base's Ringers On or Off". Using the Handset To answer a call using the handset, pick up the handset and press any key on the handset (except OFF or the LINE key for the line that is not ringing). To end a call, place the handset on the cradle or press OFF on the handset. Using the Base To answer a call using the speakerphone in the base, press LINE for the ringing line on the base. To end a call using the base, press HANG UP on the base. CHANGING CHANNELS To reduce interference and get the clearest communications between the base and handset, the phone automatically selects the best channel for a call at the beginning of the call. The phone uses one of 10 channels when you hear a dial tone or during a call. However, you can manually change the channel the phone is using during a call. When you press CH/INTCM on the handset, the phone changes to another channel, displays the new channel number, and uses that channel. IMPORTANT: If you are making an outgoing call and want to change channels, you must first dial the outgoing number when you hear the dial tone, then press CH/INTCM. NOTES: Since unwanted noise usually affects more than one consecutive channel, the phone does not tune to the next consecutive channel when you press CH/INTCM. If the handset is too far from the base, the phone might not change channels. Move closer to the base and try again. If an incoming call was answered on another phone then transferred to your phone, you might have to press 1 before you can press CH/INTCM to change channels during the call. USING PRIVACY During a call using the base, press PRIVACY on the base to talk to someone else in the room without the person on the other end of the call hearing your conversation. The PRIVACY indicator on the base lights. Press PRIVACY again to resume your phone conversation. USING FLASH You can use LINE 1 or LINE 2 as a flash key to produce a switchhhok signal for special phone services, such as call waiting. To take an incoming call without disconnecting the current call, press the LINE button for the line with the incoming call. To return to the first call, press the LINE button for that line. NOTE: If you do not have any special phone services, pressing LINE 1 or LINE 2 might disconnect the current call. USING REDIAL To redial the last number dialed, pick up the handset, press LINE 1 or LINE 2 on the handset, then press REDIAL on the handset. The phone automatically dials the last number dialed. PUTTING A CALL ON HOLD To put a call on hold, press HOLD on the handset or base. The line indicator for that line flashes on the display and on the base. To return to the call, press LINE for that line on the handset or base. USING TONE SERVICES ON A PULSE LINE If you have pulse service, you can temporarily switch to tone dialing during a call for banking services or computer transactions. Dial the number as usual, then simply press * on the handset at the appropriate place in the call to change to tone dialing. Further keypresses send tone signals. The phone automatically resets to pulse dialing when you hang up. ADVANCED OPERATION USING THE INTERCOM Use the intercom feature when you want to talk with someone at the handset or the base. Testing the Handset's Ringer You can test the type of ring tone you selected for each line on the handset. 1. Follow Steps 1-3 under "Setting the Ringer Tone" on Page 21. 2. Within about 25 seconds, press 1 to select Line 1's ringer or press 2 to select Line 2's ringer. NOTE: If you do not select an option within about 25 seconds, the phone turns itself off. If this happens, start again at Step 1. 3. Press 0 to test the currently selected ringer. The ringer sounds for a few seconds, then turns off. 4. When you finish testing the ringer, press PROG/MEM or OFF. Turning the Handset's Ringer Off You can turn off the handset's ringer for each line so you will not be disturbed by a telephone call. This setting also saves battery power. NOTE: The base's ringer still rings even if you turn the handset's ringer off. 1. Follow Steps 1-3 under "Setting the Ringer Tone" on Page 21. 2. Within about 20 seconds, press 1 to select Line 1's ringer or press 2 to select 2's ringer. 3. Press 5 to turn the ringer off. "5" appears next to rinGEr on the display. 4. Press PROG/MEM or OFF to store your selection. When a call comes in, the ringer for the line you selected does not sound, but other telephones connected to the same line still ring. You can answer the call as usual. NOTES: To turn the handset's ringer on again, simply follow the steps in "Setting the Ringer Tone" on Page 21 and select the desired ringer type. If you press OFF on the handset while the phone is ringing, both the handset's and the base's ringer turns off for that call only. If the next call comes in more than 5 seconds later, both ringers automatically turn back on. CALL WAITING To flash over to the other call, press the line button for the line that you are currently on. To flash back to the first call, press the same line button again. (RMF/EB/IR-04/05/96)
