System 404 Four Line Telephone System (430-0451) Care and Maintenance Faxback Doc. # 33054 LIGHTNING Your Radio Shack phone product has built-in protection circuits - that meet or exceed FCC requirements - to reduce risk of damage from surges in telephone and AC power line current. However, an incident such as a lightning strike near or directly to these lines may cause an excessive surge of voltage that can damage the phone device. Lightning damage is uncommon, but it can occur to phones and other electronic devices. If you are concerned about it or live in an area with frequent and/or severe electronic storms, we suggest that you unplug your electronic products during the storms. For trouble-free operation, there are two main things to remember: 1. Never leave weak or dead batteries in your System 404. Even "leak proof" batteries can leak damaging chemicals. To assure adequate back-up power, the batteries should be replaced once a year. We recommend our 23-583 Extra-Life batteries. 2. Handle and use your phone with care. It's a sensitive electro- mechanical instrument. Avoid rough treatment, temperature extremes, and areas with high levels of dust and humidity. IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS If your System 404 is not operating properly, going through this check list might keep you from spending unnecessary time and money. 1. Is the unit properly connected? Good ground at the AC outlet must be connected for proper status indication. 2. Has the status indication been properly set? If you lose calls when attempting to place them on hold, you may need to change the "Hold condition" switch to the low current position. 3. If your telephone is silent when a status indicator shows a incoming call, check the volume adjustment thumbwheel on the front of the unit. IF YOU STILL HAVE PROBLEMS Disconnect the unit immediately! If other phones on the same line function properly, the problem is in the unit or its installation. If you're unable to locate the problem, bring the unit to your local Radio Shack store. We have the personnel, parts, and service to get your System 404 back into service as quickly as possible. (LB-05/10/96)
