DUoFONE-210 2-Line SpeakerPhone with Auto-Dialer (430-0615) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 34453 INSTALLING/REPLACING THE BATTERIES You need to install two AA batteries to protect the numbers you store in the DUoFONE-210's memory. If you are replacing the batteries, be sure to have fresh batteries on hand before you remove the old batteries. The circuit holds memory for a short time, but if the batteries are not replaced quickly the DUoFONE-210 might lose the stored numbers. Also, if the telephone has been installed, keep it connected to the telephone line while you replace the batteries. 1. Open the battery compartment by pulling the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow. 2. Insert two AA batteries, as indicated by the drawing, observing polarities (+ and -). CAUTION: Incorrect battery installation can damage the telephone. 3. Replace the battery compartment cover. Test the batteries periodically by pressing the BATT. TEST button. If the BATT. TEST indicator lights up, the batteries are still good. SELECTING A LOCATION Select a location for your new telephone that is near a telephone jack and an AC outlet. Position the DUoFONE-210 so that the wires are not in the way of normal activities. CONNECTING THE AC ADAPTER The supplied AC adapter provides power for the speakerphone and the indicators. If you have a power failure, the telephone still works, but the indicators do not light and the speakerphone does not function. 1. Plug the AC adapter's small plug into the jack on the back of the telephone. 2. Plug the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet (117 volt 60Hz). CONNECTING THE DUoFONE-210 TO THE PHONE LINES Plug the modular cord coming from the DUoFONE-210 into an RJ-14 two-line jack. If you have only one line turn the L2 ON/OFF switch to "OFF" to disable line 2 or you must order the other line from the telephone company. An RJ-14 jack looks identical to a regular single-line modular jack, but it is wired differently. If only Line 1 works after you complete the install- ation, the second line has not been wired to the jack. If this is the case or if your telephone lines do not end in an RJ-14 jack, you can: a. Update the wiring yourself. Radio Shack sells the jacks and adapters necessary to convert from the older wiring methods (four-prong, direct wiring). b. Connect the DUoFONE-210 to two RJ-11 (single-line) jacks, using a two- line coupler (Cat. No. 279-401). c. Have the telephone company update the wiring of your telephone system. NOTE: The telephone company is authorized to charge you for the installation of the jack. The phone company will ask you for the USOC number of the jack to be installed. This number is RJ-14 (or RJ-14W for a wall installation). If the telephone lines were not wired correctly or if they were wired using flat modular telephone cable, you might hear crosstalk when both lines are in use. WALL-MOUNTING THE DUoFONE-210 If you wish, you can mount the DUoFONE-210 on a wall. The DUoFONE-210 can be mounted on a standard telephone wall plate or directly on the wall using two screws with heads that fit into the key-hole slots on the back of the unit. You can get a telephone wall plate and the short modular cord needed for wall mounting at your local Radio Shack store. If you are mounting your telephone directly on the wall, follow these instructions: 1. Drill two holes 3 15/16 inches (100 mm) apart. 2. Thread the screws into the wall letting the heads extend about 1/8 inch (3 mm). 3. Plug the other end of the telephone cord into the telephone jack. To hold the handset in place, lift and rotate the handset holder. RESETTING THE TELEPHONE Before using the telephone for the first time or storing any phone numbers in memory, press the RESET button (located under the Memory Index Card) with a pen or pencil to initialize the microprocessor. INSTALLING THE HANDSET CORD Plug one end of the coiled cord into the modular jack on the left side of the telephone base. Plug the other end into the handset. you might prefer a longer cord, especially if you use a wall installation. Your Radio Shack store has a wide selection of telephone accessories including longer coiled cords. ATTACHING THE STAND A detachable stand is included with your DUoFONE-210. It tilts the telephone forward slightly to make the telephone easier to use when placing it on the desk. To attach the stand, simply insert the four latching tabs into the matching slots on the bottom of the telephone. The stand snaps into place. SETTING THE RINGER SWITCHES Two ringers, L1 RINGER and L2 RINGER, are built into the DUoFONE-210 for independent line ringing setting. Each RINGER OFF/LO/HI switch lets you set the telephone for a normal or soft ring for its line. You can also turn the ringer off if you do not want to be disturbed. When the ringer is turned off, you can still make calls. You can answer calls too, if you hear an extension phone ringing. SETTING THE DIALING MODE Set the TONE/PULSE switch for the type of service you have. If you are not sure which service you have, perform this simple test. 1. Set the TONE/PULSE switch to TONE. 2. Press the [LINE 1] button. 3. Lift the handset and listen for a dial tone. 4. Press any number other than 0. If the dial tone stops, you have touch tone service for that line. Otherwise, you have pulse service. 5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for Line 2. 6. If you have pulse service on either line, set the TONE/PULSE switch to PULSE. Otherwise, leave the switch set to TONE. ADJUSTING THE ON-HOLD INDICATOR Your DUoFONE-210 determines the status of a line (in use, on hold, and so on) by sensing the telephone line's voltage. The voltage varies depending on the type of telephone system the telephone is connected to and the distance from the telephone company's central office and your location. Therefore, you might need to make an initial adjustment to the line status for best operation. 1. Using Line 1, dial the Line 2 telephone number. 2. When Line 2 begins to ring, place Line 1 on hold. The Line 1 indicator should blink continuously at every station with no interference from the ringing line. If the indicator does not blink steadily when another line rings, adjust the Line 1 On-hold indicator as follows. 3. a. Remove the plastic stand before making the adjustment. Insert the supplied metal key into the line adjust hole and turn it clockwise until the line indicator blinks properly, turn the key counter - clockwise. b. To ensure a constant on-hold indicator, turn the key a fraction of a turn more than necessary in the same directions. 4. Repeat the above steps for Line 2. (LB/EB 08/27/96)
